(Authors Note) Another chapter for you all—Yay!
After this, I feel I'll only make one last chapter, but if anyone nags me to continue, I'll consider it. It seems people always read and then never review or say Hi! Getting to know the author isn't such a bad thing you know. I rely on your support! It helps keep me going! ^_^ Back to the show! Where we last left off….

The silence lingered in the small circle, until Shippou spoke up. “Has her soul really left her body?” Inuyasha took Kagome into his arms, cradling her and crying softly into her ebony hair. “Kagome, I'm sorry. I never did tell you but I do; I love you, Kagome. Please you must forgive me…I was afraid.” Inuyasha continued. No one attempted to stop him, or tease; in fact they hoped he'd keep going. “I was afraid you'd reject me and now…” He stuttered. He began to cry again. “Now it's too late.” Inuyashas' muffled cries were all that were heard. The wind blew softly now, the others shedding tears, but silently. Time seemed to stop. Inuyasha did not attempt to stifle his cries.

A low muffle was heard. Everyone besides Inuyasha looked between themselves, but they didn't make the noise. They heard it again through Inuyashas' soft sobs. Everyone turned to Kagome; Inuyasha lifted his head and tried to silence himself to listen. Kagomes lips moved. Everyone gasped. “Kagome, is that you? Are you ok?” Shippou cried, finding his way to her shoulder, and trying to wake her. Her eyes slowly opened.
“Kagome” Inuyasha whispered softly, a smile as bright as the sun on his face.

“Are you ok?” Kagome stirred from the question, saying, “I think so, but I have one question.” “Sure, anything!” Inuyasha said, feeling happy once again. Kagome looked to all of them, her voice soft and innocent but singed with fear. “Who are you?”

Too Late?

Chapter 4

Inuyasha stoked the fire. The others naturally had fallen asleep, and he had been left as guard. Not that it was a bad thing; he enjoyed the quiet, the time to think. Some time for himself, and also to observe his group members in their sleep. Sango, the times she slept in peace were pleasant. She would make wonderful smiles in her sleep, and she giggled under her breath. But most of the time she had nightmares. The events of the night the demonslayers were killed, playing over and over again her mind, and each time she made the same choices, as if it weren't actually a dream, rather a memory. Thoughts of Kohaku also swam in her head, taunting her with every choice not to kill him.

Miroku usually slept soundly, except when he was having dreams about….women, he supposed. Inuyasha didn't even want to think about what Miroku was doing in his dream.
Shippou and Kirara slept without worry, cuddled next to each other, at least when Kagome wasn't there.

Kagome…he thought. Last night, her soul had been stolen away, but when Inuyasha killed the demon, he supposed it would bring him back his Kagome. Though her sanity remained intact…her memory sadly had not. Inuyashas' ears sunk at this thought. A whole day had passed, and once again, night had fallen for them, and still Kagome had not regained her memories. She was good with names, and was able to remember them quite easily, except when she called a certain someone “Mango”, and she got a few good laughs out of everyone, which was good, as camp had gone quiet without Kagomes' cheerful talking. Inuyasha realized she was telling the truth when she first looked at him directly.

Her eyes searched his for any recognition, but didn't find any. She stared at him with such…unfamiliarity in her eyes. She really did not know who he was.

Inuyasha sniffled, then stoked the fire once more. He had wondered; wondered if he should tell her sooner, but he delayed it, hid it, and eventually tried to disregard it. And now it had come to this. Kagome, the girl he loved, that he protected, that he risked everything for….she didn't even know who he was.

His eyes stared into the crackling fire. He thought he saw a Kagomes' face, smiling at him through the flames, but it was just some dancing colors. Kagome was sitting near camp on top of a green hill, overlooking the valley; he could see her from here. She was above them, looking off into the night sky. Its hopeless…he thought.

I can't rebuild the relationship we had. All our adventures, all the times I protected her… the special moments between them he kept deep in his heart. He couldn't rebuild a connection that had taken that much time to make. The chances of someone like him and Kagome falling in love were slim, but the pieces had fallen into place. He had been lucky. He wouldn't get all those chances again. She wouldn't look the same at him anymore. Why didn't he tell her earlier? Why? But he hadn't. No second chances. It was too late.

If I can't rebuild that relationship…he wondered, looking at her from a distance. …Then I'll have to get her to remember! The fire looked like it would last for a while, and Sango and Miroku looked content enough. He quickly told Kirara to guard them, and hurried from the campsite to the hill overlooking the valley.

*
Kagome swung her legs over the side of the cliff. Sure it was a loooong way down, but it made her feel a little more alive. From the hill, (more like cliff) she could see everything in the valley. The wind was strong again tonight; it made waves in the grass around her, and in the tall tree that was a few feet behind her. It blocked anyone's view who tried to look at her from a distance. This place is like a private spot, she thought, no one could see her, (besides those at the camp) and she had it all to herself. The wind swayed again, she heard the leaves of the tree sway, and she swore she saw the stars move a little.

Kagome stared off into the sky, purposely losing herself in all the stars. She had been so confused today. Why couldn't she remember? These people who claimed to be her friends; she couldn't remember them. But a tugging feeling inside her told her she should. Why can't I remember them, she thought. Their eyes were so familiar, and yet, so distant. She still had no idea why she was not in Tokyo with her family. She couldn't remember anything past getting her cat Buyou out of the well house, then….she trailed off in her thoughts. Its like I was asleep, suddenly I woke up Inuyashas' arms. That is his name I believe.

Kagome hugged her legs tighter, and buried her face in her knees. She felt like crying, but she had no idea why. The grass rustled around her, sounding like the footsteps of someone close. They were soft, but gradual. Kagome bit her lip. She wanted to remember. She wanted to remember these people. She wanted everything back to the way they should have been, because she knew this wasn't right. Especially Inuyasha.

There was something special about Inuyasha. She felt most of all she needed to remember him. His eyes, so familiar, like she had known them forever, distant in her past like a sweet lullaby. How could she not remember dog ears like those? She rubbed them when she first woke up in Inuyashas' arms; he seemed to take note of it as if she had done it before.

The footsteps closer now, but she didn't hear them. Tonight was a perfect night. The breeze brought her hair back, and let it slowly fall. She thought she heard someone breathe in deeply, but very softly, as if not to alert her. Was it her imagination?

She had felt so empty ever since she had lost her memory… If she had in the first place. How did she know this all wasn't some sort of big, fat, ironically not funny, joke. No, she thought. These feelings are all too real. The feelings of nostalgia washed over her constantly. Feelings of friends, of places, of Inu— She stopped to whisper the name out loud. “Inuyasha…” She certainly wasn't expecting an answer, until she heard a small, “Yes?” A sad looking Inuyasha made his way over and sat next to her.

Neither said anything at first. It wasn't awkward in the least, but she felt as if there was nothing to say. Kagomes' mind nagged her, trying to remember something, anything as she gazed into his soft, golden eyes. Why, she thought, why can't I remember you?
