Within a second, the figure appeared before her face, shocked at her state of care. “Kagome…” he said, his voice low and jagged, but filled with much concern. A word flashed in her mind, the memory of a wolfish man, connecting to the figure she saw in front of her. A single word rung in her head, she could almost see it pass by her eyes.
“Koga…” the priestess whispered, suddenly collapsing against the dirt road. The wolf demon cradled her, cooing softly, whispering soft words and promises. Somehow, he hadn't managed to notice a piece of fir, rip from his loincloth. With a new determination, the demon sped away, searching for safe grounds, and a place to make a fire. Kagome had to make it. There were no other options. She had to survive.

Kirara nibbled on the small piece of fur in her mouth. She watched the demon speed away with someone she knew very closely. She tilted her head a bit, almost expecting her return. When there was none, she meowed again, turning her back to the road. With the piece of fur still clutched in her teeth, she instantly grew, and flew off towards her camp. Surely her master would want to know about this…

Too Late?
Chapter 8
A few hours passed into the night, before Inuyasha got up from his head-first position in the ground, and slowly; very groggily made his way to camp. He shifted his weight from his right foot, then too his left, nearly tipping over and rolling down the hill; though at this point he didn't really care how he made his entrance. An arctic chill had enticed him out of his sleep, and back to the warmth of the campfire.
He leapt into camp when his balance returned, a quick recovery always followed for a demon as himself; albeit half-demon. Miroku stirred from his slight slumber, grinning at the expression on Inuyashas' face. “Ahh, Inuyasha, how did your conversation with Kagome go?” he said, noting the dirt that appeared in various places on his face. It could only mean one thing. “None of your business, monk.” Inuyasha spat, taking his place by the fire, not daring to look in the direction of Kagomes' cot.
A few minutes passed by; the wind danced with the flames of the fire, tangling its embers in loops and weaves. Its ash fluttered into the air, gently floating in small movements back to the ground. Miroku still waited, his eyes on Inuyasha .Inuyasha was not one to hold things in when he was angry. Though he always kept his feelings to himself, somehow he never was at a loss for words when something was bothering him; he didn't complain, he had told himself, but who was he kidding, really?
The suddenly cold weather seemed to freeze over his anger.
“She sat me…” a small whisper came; not directed at anyone, but he knew Miroku would hear it. Miroku shifted his elbows, sitting up, which obviously meant he was moving in for a conversation. Spare me, Inuyasha thought, the words nearly spilling out his lips.
“Inuyasha, if she sat you that means she must have remembered it, correct?” The monk offered, thinking perhaps Inuyasha was too dense to look past the feeling of being sat; especially after he had accepted his feelings for Kagome. But she didn't remember, so it's not like he could blame her.
Miroku shivered, as did Inuyasha from his spot by the fireplace. Winter was setting in for the first time in a year.
He huffed a bit. “She ran away laughing…” Miroku could not hold back the smile that threatened to pass his face. “Is it really that big of a deal for you? Its not like she remembered how it would affect you, and the shock probably caused her to laugh-“he stated, seeing a feeling of leisure cross his face. Miroku had gotten through to him.
“I...I guess your right Miroku. I shouldn't have taken it too seriously…for a pervert you sure are smart.” He laughed some, adding the last bit as a compliment.
Miroku coughed. “It's called “common sense.” Inuyasha must not have heard him, for if he had, he was sure it would have ended painfully, as it usually did. Inuyasha, now a bit relaxed, felt a little sorry towards Kagome in truth. Remembering the cold weather, he looked to make sure she slept peacefully.
A pang of worry struck through him when he saw that no one laid in her bed. He looked around quickly, then back to Miroku, his shoulders tensed. Well that didn't last too long, came a thought from Miroku. Inuyasha spoke as if trying to lower his voice.
“Where's Kagome” he said, trying not to think the worst may have happened. Kirara also seemed to be missing. She hadn't gone home had she? A cold sweat pierced his face, he frantically wondered if he had offended her in any way in the last while. Wait, he thought. She doesn't know how to get back home. This caused only a little relief, more doubt and worry sprouting in his mind.
Miroku scratched his head. “I recall her walking out of camp…” seeing Inuyashas' sudden change in expression, he continued quickly. “Don't worry… she wasn't mad in the least and Kirara had followed her.” he said, jumbling his words into a working sentence. Inuyasha loosened up a bit. He tried to search for Kagomes' scent, but the cold air sent painful chills throughout his lungs when he inhaled too deeply. He had to go off of Mirokus' info. He needed to know one more thing.
“How long ago did she leave…” he nearly whispered, his eyes gazing fiercely at Mirokus'. Miroku feeling uncomfortable under his stare, turned away. “Shortly after she came down from the hill.”
Inuyasha gasped silently. For once, Miroku wasn't the one who realized it first.
Kagome had left by herself.…hours ago.

Kirara flew through the air, the familiar feeling of someone's weight was gone; it was nice for a change, though a little missed in thought of her companions. Spotting the familiar campfire near the base of a great cliff, she descended, a cold sheet of air passing over the flames on her body. They didn't bother her too much.
With the fur still in her mouth, she plunged towards the fire, then quickly shrank as she landed. Inuyasha seemed to worry that Kirara had come back without Kagome. “Kirara, where is Kagome?” he asked her, his eyes betraying his brave face. She was smart enough to understand, she unfortunately was not gifted with a way to answer. Suddenly remembering the fur in her mouth, she sorely gave it up to Inuyasha. It was slightly moist but in all perspective was unharmed.
Quickly sniffing the fur, a look of anger passed his face, his hand squeezing the soft “fabric” in his hand. “This is…Kogas' fur…” he grunted, turning towards Miroku as if he expected him to know the answer. “Then surely, Koga picked her up…maybe she was in danger…” he pondered, his entire response opposite of that of Inuyashas'. “Koga, you bastard! She doesn't have her memory!” he screamed. Suddenly, a thought struck him.
With Kagomes' memory gone, Koga would surely use that to his advantage; in more ways then one. With an angry cry, Inuyasha leapt off the ground and began running. Miroku knew even if he jumped on Kirara, and followed Inuyasha now, he would never catch up. Besides, it would not be wise to leave Sango and their possessions alone. With a quick sigh, he sat by the fire, the way he remembered Inuyasha doing it. He was the new guard; for now at least.
With a soft meow, Kirara picked up the crumpled piece of fur and nibbled happily; enjoying a new flavor that differed from the occasional demon she bit on the battle field. For a reason she could not explain, the fur of this one tasted different. Fatigue set in on the small cat, the cold night finally catching up to her body. With a soft meow, she curled by Shippou, who seemed to enjoy having his warmth again. Oddly enough, she did too.

Koga placed yet another blanket over Kagomes' body. She had not yet awakened from her sleep. It had been quite a while since Koga had found a cave to rest in. It was rather small compared to the large caves of the mountain, but it would hold both of them and give them plenty of room. The fire had not gone out since.
When Koga collected the fire wood, he would only do it from where he could still see Kagome. He was not about to let his precious Kagome be hurt while he was around. It worried him that she stayed cold for long periods of time. He placed her near the fire, and gave her several blankets, but for some reason, the only thing that did was prevent her temperature from dropping.
In her sleep she mumbled inaudible things. He tried to catch what she said, but throughout her long period of sleeping he only caught a few words;
One being his own name, “Koga” which he smiled at, pleased to know Kagome may have been dreaming about him. He heard “Test” and “Bath”, and then a word he did know entirely. “Atmosphere”…
He once caught her saying “Inuyasha” which rewarded a frown from Koga, only to arouse a smile in her next word, “Sit”.
Kagome must have been extremely sick he thought. He held her while she slept, something he had never been able to do before. “Don't worry Kagome, I'm not about to let anything happen to you. I'll…” he paused a moment, when he saw her stir. “I'll protect you.” Shortly after his words, he fell asleep next to Kagome; this would prove helpful in keeping her warm.
He was not sure if he had dreamt it, but somewhere in the night, a small voice seemed to whisper his name, her eyes focusing only on him, before she slept with a smile. “Koga”….
