Chapter 11 - Deepest Despair

Well, I'm back from my much needed break. My life got hectic, and my brain was preoccupied and unable to write. So sorry for the delay. In the end, it was your reviews that inspired me to start writing this story again. Reviews are so great to me - they inspired me so much. Well, here is the chapter.. sorry it's kinda short!

“Did you see the look in Inuyasha's eyes when he ran off with Kagome like that?” Sango asked, an amused tone distinguishable in her voice.

“Why whatever do you mean, my lovely Sango?” Miroku inquired as he watched Shippo walk towards a tree, plop down at it's base, and begin to suck on a lollypop that Kagome had brought for him.

“I don't know really. It was like... all caring, yet lightly mischievous at the same time, as if he was planning something. And he had this sort of gleam in his eyes...” Sango trailed off, frustrated that she couldn't properly explain Inuyasha's expression to the monk.

“Hmm... did it look anything like this?” Miroku asked. Sango abruptly turned to look at the monk. He was standing only a few feet, both love and lust clearly visible in his eyes and face.

“Actually, that's exactly how Inuyasha looked! You're pretty good at that Miroku. How do you make that expression so well?” Sango asked, smiling slightly, completely unaware of her companion's intentions.

“Because I know exactly what Inuyasha is going through. I feel the same way, but towards someone else...” Miroku trailed off, still gazing at the demon-exterminator and inching his way steadily closer to her.

“Oh, I see. Wait a minute... Mirok-umph!” Sango was quickly cut off by Miroku's mouth crashing down on her own. He snaked his arms around her waist and held her close, not wanting to let go of that moment and return to the real world where he would be slapped across the face till he was unconscious. Sango's body was rigid, her eyes wide in complete and utter shock.

`I must be dreaming... this couldn't possibly be real! It was only yesterday that he asked that young maiden to bear his child, so why is he doing this?' Sango thought, still not relaxing.

`I must be dreaming... Sango hasn't slapped me or pushed me away yet! Could she possibly feel the same about me as I do about her?' Miroku pondered as he kissed the gorgeous woman in his arms. And then something happened that the monk didn't even think possible, Sango relaxed and her body melted into his. She hesitantly reached up to hold him to her, gentle but with a sense of urgency. It was a shy kiss, only beginning to discover the hidden passion locked away in each others hearts. They slowly broke away, and when Sango opened her eyes, she blushed a deep scarlet and covered her face, whispering and muttering under her breath as she stumbled around the campsite. Miroku stayed rooted to the spot, an odd grin on his lips and a thoughtful expression. And that's how they wasted away the morning, that is, until they heard Kagome's scream.

“Fuck!” Inuyasha muttered, scrambling off of Kagome and straightening his clothes. Kagome's face was beet-red, her heart still beating quickly from the previous events with Inuyasha and herself. She abruptly say up and tried to cover herself, letting out a frustrated sigh when she noticed her ripped panties lying meters away.

“Dog-shit! What the hell do you think you were doing with MY woman!?” Kouga practically screamed. Inuyasha could sense the waves of rage that were drifting off of the wolf, beginning to sum up just how much sanity Kouga still had. It was true; seeing Kagome with that lowly hanyou had sent the youkai into a state of no return. His head was pounding with anger, his heart clenched at the realization that Kagome truly didn't want to mate with him. The battle that would soon occur was inevitable.

“How many times have I told you that she is NOT your woman!? Kami, can't you take a hint? She doesn't want you!” Inuyasha yelled, pissed off that he was yet again interrupted while he was with Kagome, this time by none other than his rival. And that was when Kouga lunged, catching the hanyou completely off guard as he was flung to the other side of the meadow. Kagome let out a high pitched scream, calling out Inuyasha's name and begging Kouga to stop. It was no use, however. The anger that the wolf was experiencing was just too much, and Kagome's voice just couldn't penetrate it. Inuyasha stood shakily to his feet, shaking his head slightly to clear the fogginess that Kouga's punch had caused. Again, Kouga lunged.

“She is MINE! She will become my mate after you're out of the picture! She will want me! I will make her mine whether she wants it or not! You will learn to love me Kagome!” Kouga screamed, spit flying from his mouth, red bleeding into his eyes. At the wolf's statement, Inuyasha let out a roar and pelted towards him. How dare he even consider doing something to HIS Kagome. Kagome was his, and no one else could ever claim her. It was at that moment, Inuyasha realized what truly dwelled in his heart. The thought of ever losing Kagome to another man made him feel sick. The thought of Kagome touching another man made his heart clench and his blood run cold. In the deepest depths of his heart, he had already claimed her; already knew that they were destined to be together, in every way that 2 people could be together. Inuyasha knew that he wanted.. he needed to mate with Kagome. He loved her.

“No.. Kagome will not mate with you. I will be the one to make her mine; to claim her. I would give my life to her. I would give her my heart; my heart that is already consumed by her.” Inuyasha declared, surprising even himself as the words left his mouth. It was all so strange to him, to be so open with his emotions. Yet it all felt so natural, as if he was meant to say and feel the way he did about the young miko.
Kouga stopped in his tracks, mouth hanging open at the hanyou's words. Utter shock had enveloped the wolf's mind, but it was quickly being replaced by anger and hate. The ookami tribe leader was visibly shaking with rage. Kagome however, had silent tears pouring down her face. Tears of happiness, joy, and hope. A faint light radiated from her body, promoting peace and calm. Inuyasha, the man who had stolen her heart so long ago, felt the same way for her as she did about him. It sounded as if, dare she say it, Inuyasha may even love her. All of her wildest dreams were coming true. All of the dreams and hopes that she thought were impossible; it was all coming true within moments.

`She's crying!? I just poured out my fucking heart and that bitch is crying!? Maybe.. maybe she doesn't feel the same? Of course she doesn't. I'm just a worthless hanyou...' Inuyasha thought. Doubt clouded his mind as his heart beat slowed - the hope that was leaving his body was carrying the hanyou's will to live with it. That was when Kouga struck. With a roar of pure rage, the wolf pierced through Inuyasha's stomach, sending blood flying through the air. Inuyasha let out a low moan, grunting as he fell to the ground, facedown in the grass flecked with his own blood and sweat. The last thing Inuyasha saw before darkness consumed him was Kagome's angelic face, contorted with fear, sadness, and dismay. The last thing he heard before his mind went numb was Kagome's voice, screaming his name at the top of her lungs.

Kouga dislodged his arm from the limp hanyou's body, staring wide-eyed first at Inuyasha, and then to his crimson stained hand. After a moment, the wolf's gaze shifted to the young miko crouched up a short distance away. She huddled on the ground underneath a magnolia tree. The girl hugged her knees to her chest as she slowly rocked back and forth, deep sobs wracking her body. Her face was buried in her legs, hair messy and covering her eyes from the wolf's view. She was mumbling incoherent words in between her choked sobs, and Kouga had to strain his ears to pick up what she was saying.

`He's gone. Inuyasha is... dead.'

“No.. no no no.. my Inuyasha.. my.. my.. mine.. gone.. Inuyasha.. no..” Kagome whispered, enraging the ookami youkai once again, however he fought to maintain control. Slowly walking over to the girl, he barked out,

“Forget about him, Kagome. You're with me now. I'll take care of you better than that worthless piece of dog shit ever could.”

Kagome slowly rose to her feet, her head bowed and still not visible to Kouga. Shakily, she took a small step forward, keeping her eyes down, her raven hair blowing softly in the breeze and shrouding her face.

“You bastard.. I would rather die than be with you after what you've done to Inuyasha! I.. I.. I loved him.” Kagome whispered harshly, a strong pulse of purifying energy radiating off of her and singeing Kouga's hair and skin. The wolf winced in pain, but made no other movements. What the two didn't notice was that the inu hanyou laying on the ground next to Kouga didn't get burned from the miko's energy. It seemed to be absorbed into his body, turning his complexion just a bit darker from the previous pale due to loss of blood.

“Kagome.. I already laid claim to you years ago, the moment I saw you, I knew that I wanted to take you as my mate. Now that Inuyasha is finally dead, you have no one except me. I WILL take you as mine. There is no other choice. You WILL learn to love me!” Kouga ground out, trying to keep his voice calm but emphasizing his possessiveness. Kagome let out a strangled sob, moaning loudly at the wolf's arrogance and disregard to her will.

“No, Kouga. I won't. My heart does not belong to you. It is with Inuyasha. I gave him my heart; he has my love. There is nothing left for you.” Kagome whispered. The sun passed behind a cloud, stealing away the brightness that had previously occupied the meadow. The brightness in Kouga's eyes seemed to fade slightly as sudden realization set in. He could not have her. She was right in front of him, yet a world away, her heart and soul forever dwelling with that pathetic hanyou. In the end, Inuyasha had won the prize, even though he was no longer alive to take it. What had he done?

“Kouga.. I'm sorry, but.. I belong with Inuyasha, even though he is no longer here...” Kagome let out another heart wrenching sob, her head still bent down out of the wolf's view. He could feel the sadness and grief in her aura; sense her sorrow; smell her tears. Her usual bubbly energy and will to live was slowly seeping away - the Kagome he knew and loved had also left when he had taken Inuyasha's life.

`How can I go on without him? I shall never be the same as I was before... it's my fault that he is gone. If it wasn't for me, Kouga and him would never have fought, and Inuyasha would still be alive. I can not live with that knowledge, with the thought that I somehow could have prevented his death. He was so beautiful. So perfect. He never understood just how amazing he really was; always thinking of himself as worthless, just because he was a hanyou. I loved him... I always will. I love him, still.' Kagome thought desperately, the tears still streaming down her face.

“I.. I love.. I love you, Inuyasha. I've always loved you... so much...” Kagome said, her tone quiet; pouring out her heart - every thing she had wanted to say to him, she needed to say now.

“I love you, Inuya-“

“Stop..”

Kagome's head finally jerked up, tears flying off her face, as she covered her mouth to stifle her gasp.

Ta da! Well, there's my latest chapter. Again, I am so sorry for the delay, but my life got extremely interesting, and very hectic. So much drama. I needed to take that time off from writing. Sorry the chapter was short, but I thought I should end it there. Please review. It helps me a lot! I'll try to update again in a week or so. No promises though. I only write if I feel like it. Reviews help me feel like it, though.. *wink wink*
