Chapter 6 The Beginning of A Journey… Together
Kagome was happy that Inuyasha chose to join her on this long journey. She had been so lonely since she started this journey. She didn’t think it was possible to find someone who would be willing to walk with her on this road. Kagome and Inuyasha gathered their things and were on their way. As they left the cave, both thought to themselves that they would never forget this place where they met one another. This cave would hold a very special place in their hearts for the rest of their lives.
Kagome walked on the dirt path, while Inuyasha jumped from branch to branch on each side of the path Kagome walked on. They would hold a conversation for a few minutes at a time when they both would go silent again. Neither of them really knew what to say. They had traveled alone for so long, it was hard for them to get used to conversing while walking, or jumping for Inuyasha.
“So Inuyasha, where were you headed when you stumbled upon me?” She smiled at him.
“Well, I’m not really sure. I was just going where my instincts led me.” He replied, a little embarrassed by his answer.
‘So he just wandered too.’ She thought. ‘I wonder where his family is.’ She felt her curiosity getting the best of her. “Inuyasha?” She called to him.
“Yeah? What is it?” He asked back.
“Where did you come from?” She said. Then, corrected herself. “I mean, where do your parents live?”
Inuyasha’s heart saddened. ‘I guess now is the time to tell her about my family.’ Inuyasha sighed as he started his story.
“Both my mother and my father died when I was very young.” He told her, trying to sound guarded.
Kagome gasped and stopped walking. ‘Oh my kami! Why did I just ask him that?! I’m so stupid! He’s probably so saddened by this! Stupid, stupid, stupid!! I bet he hates you now! He won’t want to stay with you anymore.’
“It’s okay Kagome. I’ve made my peace with them.” Inuyasha told her, seeing her face. “I do miss them but they are in a better place. A place of peace and not war. No hate, no violence. Sometimes, I wish I could be there with them, where no one would hate or judge me.” Inuyasha’s face became sad again. He needed to open up to her. He needed to tell someone about all his hardship he had bottled up for all these years.
Kagome’s heart felt like breaking. She hated hearing Inuyasha say all these sad things. She wanted him to just be happy. All she wanted to do was scoop up his sadness and take it away from him. Kagome just continued walking as she listened to what Inuyasha was saying, clinging to every word.
Inuyasha told her the story of when his father died, and he also told her a little bit about his mother. He told her how kind and loving she was, and about how badly others treated her. Kagome could tell how much Inuyasha love his mother by the way he talked so highly of her. She wanted to reach out to him and comfort him. She knew it had to be hard to talk about her this way.
Inuyasha continued by telling Kagome of when Izayoi got sick and slowly started to fade until she died that fateful day. “Kagome, you remember that man that visited the cave?” He asked her.
“Yes. Didn’t he say he was your brother?” She replied.
“He is my elder half brother, Sesshomaru. My father and his mother had Sesshomaru before he met my mother and mated with her.” Inuyasha told her.
Kagome was a little confused. From the little she knew of demon mating, she knew they never betrayed their mate. How could his father mate two women? “Inuyasha, how could your father mate two women?”
“He didn’t mate Sesshomaru’s mother. Their relationship was like a treaty. They had Sesshomaru to bring their dog demon tribes together and have a stronger ally. He only mated with my mother. He loved her with a love my mother couldn’t even describe to me.” Inuyasha told her.
“Interesting.” Kagome said to herself.
Inuyasha heard this with his keen hearing, but he chose to ignore it and continue his story. “Anyways, Sesshomaru and I are not very close. Well, we don’t really have much of a relationship at all. He doesn’t like the fact that his half brother is a half breed. He is constantly telling me I disgrace our family name.”
Kagome listened to Inuyasha’s words and tried to take it all in. He was telling her so much. She was happy Inuyasha was opening up to her this much. ‘He must really trust me.’ She thought. She was snapped out of her thoughts by Inuyasha’s fierce growl.
Inuyasha was thinking of how much he missed his mother when he was knocked out of the tree he had been perched in for a moment. He growled at the demon the attacked him and flipped to land on another nearby tree branch. Inuyasha immediately looked to Kagome to make sure she was alright. When he saw her aiming her bow at another demon coming out from the forest, he knew she was okay and turned his attention to the demon the knocked him off balance. When he turned though, he saw not only one demon but many demons.
“Inuyasha are you okay?” Kagome yelled to him. She tried to look for him, but he was hidden by the leaves and branches of the trees.
“Yeah, I’m fine. Can you handle the ones on your end?” He called back.
“Don’t worry about me!” She said as she grinned in his direction. She continued aiming and firing arrow after arrow at the demons that were starting to surround her.
Inuyasha grinned back even though he knew she couldn’t see it. He jumped from branch to branch cutting through demons that lunged at him. “I’ll kill all you fucking bastards!” He exclaimed.
Kagome shot and shot but there were too many. “Inuyasha! There are too many of them! We can’t fight them all off!” She called to him.
“Hang in there Kagome! I’ll be there in a second!” He told her. “Damn! There are too many of them!”
Kagome used her bow to deflect the demons that got to close. The bow glowed pink and it became like a shield. She was weakening at a rapid rate. She couldn’t hold up for much longer.
Suddenly she saw as a huge boomerang sliced through a large bunch of the hoard of demons. She heard a voice that she assumed can from the person who through the boomerang. “Hiraikotsu!” A female’s voice rang.
Kagome watched where the boomerang returned to, and saw the woman that through it. She was a young woman with long dark brown hair that she wore in a high pony tail. Her eyes were the same color of her hair and she wore pink eye shadow. Her clothes were black with dark pink, almost red accents. They were shoulder pads, elbow pads, knee pads and a stomach guard with red ribbon holding them in place.
Kagome recognized this clothing. ‘Demon slayers wear this type of clothing. Is she here to help us?’
The woman rode a large two tailed fire cat. It was a creamy color with black paws, black ears, black stripes on its tails and a black diamond on its forehead. The cat had fire coming from its paws and tails. The cat demon’s eyes were bright red and it had large sharp fangs.
“Kirara, go down!” She told the fire cat. The cat roared and lower from the sky. The demon slayer hopped off the cat and ran towards Kagome. “Are you alright Miss?” She asked kind of inspecting her.
“Yes I’m fine. Thank you for helping us.” Kagome told the woman. The demons were still coming at them. The fire cat clawed and bit at the demons to protect her master demon slayer. The demon slayer looked at Kagome a little confused.
“You’re not the only one here?” She asked as she looked around to find the other person.
“Yes. Inuyasha is in the trees fighting in that direction.” She pointed toward the tree line.
When the demon slayer heard his name, she stiffened. She knew that his name was one of a demon.
Kagome saw her body language and spoke. “No, no! He’s a good demon! Don’t worry! He saved me once!” She told her.
The demon slayer relaxed slightly. “Okay. Well let’s fight these demons off and we’ll help your friend.” She told her. Kagome nodded and raised her bow once again. She fired her arrows at the demons that were farther away from them because she didn’t want her arrows to accidentally hurt the demon cat that now fought on her side.
When a majority of the demons were destroyed, they ran into the forest line. Kagome could now see her companion fighting off demons left and right. He had many wounds and was still trying to fight. “Inuyasha!” Kagome screamed, horrified to see him in this condition. Inuyasha heard her scream and jumped down to her side.
“Kagome are you alright? You’re not hurt, are you?” He asked her inspecting her from every angle.
“I’m fine Inuyasha. You’re hurt badly though!” She said, laying her hand delicately on his wounded arm. Inuyasha flinched from the pain. He had gashes in his arm, his chest and his stomach. Blood dripped off his fingers tips and was already creating a pool of blood at their feet. All Inuyasha could think of was to protect Kagome. He didn’t even care how bad his injuries were. Nothing else mattered to him but her.
A demon lunged at them but as Inuyasha jumped in front of Kagome, the boomerang belonging to the demon slayer sliced it in half. This was the first time Inuyasha even notice the woman on the fire cat. He could also tell that she was a demon slayer from her clothing. Inuyasha just growled and took a defensive stance between the slayer and Kagome. “Kagome placed her hand on Inuyasha’s shoulder and told him, “It’s okay. She won’t hurt us.” Inuyasha listened to Kagome and turned his attention to the remaining few demons of the hoard.
The whole lot of them charged and a strong vacuuming gust of wind took them backward. “Wind tunnel!” They all heard as the demons disappeared. They seemed to be sucked into the hand of a monk that now took the place of the swarm of demons. The monk had short black hair that he wore in a low pony tail. He wore purple and black robes of a monk. He carried a staff with dangling rings that had a pure aura. Kagome had seen these before. They were used by monks to purify demons, but what was that vacuum?
The demon slayer directed the fire cat towards the monk. The two tail landed and the woman on her back hopped off and hugged the monk around the neck. They ended the embrace and turned to the two beings with them. There was an awkward silence for a few moments as the two couples stared at each other.
The demon slayer spoke first. “I never caught your name.” She said.
“My names Kagome and this is Inuyasha.” Kagome replied. She then remembered about Inuyasha’s wounds. “And he’s hurt really badly. I need to bandage him up.” She said. She placed a hand on Inuyasha’s chest and he winced in pain. He tried to pull away from her but she wouldn’t let him. “Inuyasha you need to be bandaged up.” She told him. She frowned when he tried pulling away from her.
“You really should listen to her. You’re wounds are pretty severe.” The monk said.
“Thank you.” Kagome told him.
Finally, Inuyasha allowed Kagome to bandage him. He sat under a large tree and removed his robe of the fire rat and the white shirt undershirt. Kagome took some bandages she carried with her, just in case, and some herbs and started to wrap the hanyou. The demon slayer and the monk sat a few feet away from the two and tried to chat with them as best they could.
“So what are your names?” Kagome asked as she continued her healing on the hanyou before her.
“I’m Sango. I’m a demon slayer and this is Kirara.” She said petting the now tiny two tail demon cat on her lap.
“And I’m Miroku. I’m a monk.” He told them. The couple sat close to each other. Inuyasha assumed the two were either married or dating.
“Are you two married then?” Inuyasha bluntly asked.
Sango blushed. “No, not yet at least. Is it that obvious?” She replied a little embarrassed.
“But we are planning on it.” Miroku said as he placed his arm around her waist. Sango blushed again, but for a different reason.
“Any ways, where were you heading?” Sango asked.
“We were just heading toward the next town.” Kagome told them.
“Wow. Us too. Would you like some company until then?” Miroku asked them, knowing Sango wouldn’t mind.
“Of course!” Kagome replied. Inuyasha didn’t like the idea of a demon slayer and a monk following along with them. Kagome was almost finished when her wrist was gently grabbed by Inuyasha.
“Can we talk for a minute? Alone?” Inuyasha asked Kagome in a soft tone.
“Sure Inuyasha. Is something wrong?” Kagome asked, now a little worried.
“No. I just wanna talk with you.” He replied. Kagome agreed and excused them from the couple sitting a few feet away.
