Chapter 2~Loop Holes!!

~~~Kagome sat in her room packing the belongings she would be taking with her to her new home. She fought the tears that threatened to overflow. All of this was scary and new to her. She didn't want to leave her home, her family. She didn't want to be thrust into a new home with no one she knew or with a man she would wed, who might not love her and even be mean to her. She had grown up on the stories of her mothers step sister Izoyi, how her beauty and heart had won the heart of the Great Demon Lord of the West. Of course none of these stories were told to her by her mother or father, but a lot of the elder servants remembered it well and loved to regale the young princess with their tales.
~~~Kagome had always loved that story. How the great and fearsome Dog demon lord had been flying over the human village and glanced down in time to see a young maiden in the palace gardens. He had been so captivated by her beauty he could not resist swooping down to introduce himself. Unlike most humans, the Lady Izoyi had not been frightened when she was confronted in her private gardens by the demon lord, in fact she was surprised and delighted. She had never met a demon before, let alone a lord, especially the Lord of the West, whom her father looked to for protection from any invading demons that might come to terrorize their village.

~~~The Demon Lord did not offer protection against demons because he had a soft spot for humans but he did not like uninvited demons in his land, harassing the peace and prosperity he had worked had to keep his lands in, as for bandits, human ones he left it to the human lord to take care of. It was said that at that time the demon lord did not care much one way or the other for the humans that inhabited his lands. To him they were but a small nuisance that he tolerated, as long as they did not cause trouble in his lands. Then that one fateful day when he saw the lady Izoyi things had changed for him. Stories say that after seeing her his heart was filled with her beauty, her spirit and kind soul only help aide in his adoration for her. She did not fear him, as most human would have. Instead she was intrigued and smitten with the Lord for they say he was quite handsome in his human like form.
~~~It is said that many nights the Demon Lord of the West came to the private garden to see the human princess. The meetings secret from all. At those meetings they often spoke of inconsequential things, they got to know one another and soon found themselves truly and madly in love with one another. As months went by the Demon Lord was plagued for his growing desire and need for the princess Izoyi, so much so he could not imagine another day away from her. So one day he, for the first time ever, approached the human lord, Izoyi's father and asked for Izoyi's hand in marriage. Of course the human lord was not pleased. He had great plans for his eldest daughter and none had included her marring a demon Lord. When the human Lord denied the demon Lords request, things looked as if there might be a war between the demon lord and the human lord. But it was then that princess Izoyi flung herself at her fathers feet and pleaded with him to reconsider. Not only for the good of their kingdom, which would surely not survive a battle with demons, but because she loved the Demon Lord with all her heart and soul and could not stand another day with out her by his side. Unable to deny his only blood child anything he heard her pleas and looked sadly upon her, only wishing her happiness, he finally consented. It was then the treaty was made, as a peace offering and a pact to unite both houses.

~~~Kagome sighed as she went over the other stories she heard, about the great love of the Demon Lord and the Human Princess. How their love had produced two children from their union, which they had loved unconditionally, when most demons loathed the thought of hanyou offspring. And how their union bought to their kingdom much beloved peace and prosperity. But Kagome was still afraid. Part of her reasoned that someone as loved and raised by such loving parents couldn't be all bad, but another part of her remembered the one and only time she and her sister ever encountered an actual hanyou, since they were rare, because other demons as well as humans tended to hunt them down and kill them while at birth or when very young.
~~~Kagome and her sisters had been coming back from a neighboring lords castle where they has visited for the Lords sons wedding. On their way back their caravan had been attacked by a vicious hanyou. Many of their armed guards had been killed and surely some more as well as they themselves would have been as well, had it not been for the demon patrol that happened upon them. Due to the treaty, demon patrols were often spotted here and there, maintaining the pact to keep demons away from the human population.

~~~Kagome could still recall the look of the hanyou. He had been human in form but his skin was green and scaly. His eyes slited with a reptilian sort of look. His tongue had even been forked. He had had long fangs and claws so sharp she was sure they could cut through iron. He had long black hair that was almost envious, had it not been on him. The hanyou had murdered many of their men and horses and was about to attack their carriage when the demon patrol had come. The patrol had been the ones to secure their safety and had their left over guards get them away from the scene while they took care of the rogue hanyou. It had been a scary time for all of them and Kikyo and Kagura had never forgotten that day. To them all hanyou's were beast, meant to be hunted and exterminated. Kagome had been scared but she also knew that all hanyous couldn't be like the one the had encountered. If so then why would a hanyou protect them against one of his own kind? She came to the conclusion that like humans, not all demons or hanyous were good or bad. But still. She had heard that no matter how beautiful the demon or human parent had been, the child often came out with more demonic features. She feared what her own hanyou would look like. But weather he looked like a monster or not, she had sealed her own fate. She would marry this hanyou and if not able to love him, she would do her best to be the best wife she could to him, to be loyal and trusting.
~~~As she packed and pondered her situation, she heard a knock upon her door and before she could answer, her father walked in. She gave him a smile, seeing the sad look upon his face. For him, if nothing more, I shall be brave, Kagome thought.

"My darling lotus flower…I would give anything for this fate to have not been cast upon you." her father stated as he pulled her into his arms and hugged her tightly and affectionately, which she returned fully.

"Do not worry yourself father, It was I who volunteered, it was my decision, not yours, so put your mind at ease father." she told him.

"Why did you volunteer my daughter?" her father asked for the first time since she had made her declaration.

"Honestly father, would you rather the demon lord of the west marry Kikyo or Kagura? Don't you think they might have caused more damage to the treaty than good?" Kagome teased, which made her father smile.

"As much as I love them dearly, I can see your point…either one would of surely caused more damage than good." replied her father.

"At least with me as the Lords Bride there will still be a treaty, our people will be safe, you will be safe." Kagome added.

"But you sacrifice your happiness…your dreams daughter…I know how much you looked forward to the day you would fall madly and deeply in love."

"Who says I shall not fall in love with my betrothed father? After all he is the son of Aunt Izoyi, he must of inherited her kindness and her heart, I do not think he will be a cruel being father…I believe he will be honorable and a good husband…I hear dog demons wether full or hanyou mate for life and are devoted to their mates." Kagome stated.

"That is true, but still daughter, could you be happy with just that and no love? What if he is incapable of love for you? Or you him?"

"Many noble marriages have been arranged ones, and not all are happy ones, not all of them are based on love father, I am not nieve enough not to know this, so this shall be no different…I will do my duty and I will be the best wife to my demon lord as humanly possible." she vowed to him as well as to herself.

"I do have something that might cheer you up though daughter…I was going over the treaty when I came upon an interesting detail."

"What would that be father?"

"It states that although you will be wife to him in all ways.." he paused at her blush, knowing exactly what that meant.

"He will not be able to mark you in the demon way for an entire season…for demons unless he marks you his mate then he is not bound to you or you him."

"I don't understand father, why would our union not be totally complete in ALL ways immediately?" Kagome asked with confusion. On her part the minute that he bedded her that would be the same as marriage and binding to her.

"It was the Lord and Lady's way of a way out of an unhappy marriage if things did not work out for you both…if within that year you do not fall in love with him, or he you, then the whole thing shall be null and void, yet the treaty still in tact since we have done our part in it." stated her father with a smile of hope, he believed so much that this was something he daughter would be happy about. By the look on her face he was wrong.

"What is the matter my darling lotus flower? I thought this news would be a blessing to you?" he asked.

"How can you say that father? For me, the minute that I become…"she paused to blush but held her head up high.

"For me I will be wife to him in all ways…if he should not want me then I will be a tainted woman, no one will want me after that, so how can I be happy knowing this?" she asked sadly. Her father understood, but for him, it was a way to have his daughter back with him, even if in human eyes she would be tainted. He was sure that many men would love to have his beautiful daughter, once they knew the sacrifice she made for his people.

"I understand how you feel my sweet, I had not meant for it to upset you, but to bring you comfort, at least this way you would still be with us, with your family…with me." he stated with sadness in his eyes. This made Kagome's heart ache for him. If this was hard on her, then it must be hard on him as well.

"Trust me father is does bring me comfort to know this, its good to know that if I am miserable then I will be allowed and welcomed back home." she replied as she hugged him. He hugged her back.

"Always my lotus flower, this is your home and you will always be welcomed here." he stated.

~~~Inuyasha was tired. All day long he had been told and explained to about the finer points of the treaty. What his part in it would be as well as his human bride. Much confused him but he had trusty old Myoga, the flea demon and his advisor to tell him what was protocal and what was not. But one thing did bother him.
"Oi, Myoga I have a problem with something here." Inuyasha growled.
"What is it my lord?" came the small but wise voice of the tiny demon.
"Your telling me that I wont be allowed to claim her as a proper mate in demon terms, yet she will have to fulfill her wifely duties by human standards?"
"Yes my Lord."
"Hows that fair? How could my own mother even condone this? In human law she will have wed me the moment she and I consumate out marriage on the wedding night, she will have fulfilled her duty while I will not have, if she were sent back to her human home unmated, but tainted she would be an outcast, a wanton woman who would be taunted and harassed by others…its not fair to her or her family, why would my mother agree to this?? Or did she not know if it?" Inuyasha asked, wondering if it was something his father had done without his mothers notice.
"Why should you care my lord? This benefits you in all ways." replied Myoga, although he knew for a fact his mother had indeed approved that particular decree, both his parents had a reason for this, one he would not share at the moment per their last wishes, but if all worked right then, it would matter not to either of them.
"Now your starting to sound like Jaken, that slimy toad. It matters because she may be human but she deserves better than all this…this was not her doing as it was not mine and she should have been more protected by both my father and mother, as well as her own clan of humans. " Inu growled his anger and unjustness on his bride to be, behalf. Already Myoga was smiling. It looked like his old master and mistress might have know exactly what they were doing.
"What if I don't consumate the marriage either? What If we wait to do that for the year as well?" Inuyasha asked, looking a bit hopeful. He wasn't crazy about bedding some human female he didn't know.
"Im sorry my lord, but that is not possible…In order for the treaty to be valid and no threat to your title or claim to the throne you have to consumate your marriage to this human at least in her human tradition no more than a week after her arrival…if not then your forfiet your title and the lands and Kanna will be betrothed to Naraku, as well as executor of the Western Lands till Kanna is old enough to wed him." stated Myoga and Inuyasha just growled louder as he showed his trademark tantrum and threw a vase at the wall before stomping out of the den.
