Chapter Three: Awakenings

It was 11:00 on the Tenth of July, 2016. Misato Katsuragi was eating her breakfast, and anticipating seeing the three pilots in the hospital. "I'd better get going" she muttered to herself as she tossed the bowl into the sink. "Can't forget I have to pick up Toji, Kensuke, and Hikari. They did want to see Shinji, Asuka, and Rei." She grabbed the keys to her sports car, and walked out the door, calling "See you later, Pen-Pen!" The warm water penguin squawked in farewell.

"All right, to the hospital!" Misato exclaimed after she had picked up Toji, Kensuke, and Hikari. On the way they made small talk.

"So, how do you three feel about seeing them?" asked Misato.

"Well... I'm kinda nervous" replied Aida. "What if Asuka wakes up? I don't want to be on the receiving end of the Red Devil's temper. You know she hates hospitals."

"Don't worry, Aida" snorted Toji, almost back to his normal self. "She's in a coma after all!"

"I think it'll be good to see how they are doing." said Hikari perkily. "I haven't seen Asuka in a while, after all. I mean, with the evacuation and everything."

"True" mused Misato, while she focused on the road. "Well, we're almost there."

"Hi" Misato said to the receptionist "We're here to see Shinji Ikari, Asuka Langley Soryu, and Rei Ayanami."

"Ok... They're in room 107" she replied

"Thanks" Misato said exuberantly.

The group of four walked down the hall to room 107. As they walked in, they got a huge surprise. Shinji and Asuka were HOLDING HANDS!!

"What the hell?!" yelled Misato while Toji and Aida snickered in the background.

"Yes, I know. Very strange, isn't it?" said a very haggard man in a lab coat. "They came in to us like that. We tried various methods, but nothing worked. It's like they've got death grips on each other."

"And who in the name of Unit 01 are you?" asked Misato, rather put off.

"Oh sorry. I'm Dr. Skynx, the on duty shrink." he yawned "Please excuse my appearance. I've been up all night, going over their test results. They seem to have residual mental trauma, but have extremely high levels of mental activity, considering that they are all in comas."

"And that means.....?" questioned Misato, sounding bewildered.

"It means that we don't have a clue what's going on." he responded, sounding irritated. "Well, I'll leave you all in peace."

While this was going on, Shinji Ikari, the Third Child pondered his existence. He pondered exactly why he existed. Was it to pilot Unit 01? Or was it something else? He didn't know...

Then, a mental summons came to him. "Baka-Hentai"

"Asuka? Is that you?"

"Who else would it be, you pervert?" The fiery pilot shot at him. "Are you getting you're mental kicks by imagining me?"

"Asuka...."

"Whatever. Just wake up so we can get out of here"

Suddenly, Misato and the others heard a loud gasp, and then a retching noise. "Dammit!!" Then came a flood of curses in Japanese and German.

"It's good to see you too, Red Devil" said Toji in a mocking voice. "Welcome back to the world of the living."

"Shaddup, Suzuhara!" Asuka growled. "If I wanted your opinion, I'd have beat it out of you with Unit 02!"

"Asuka!" Misato scolded.

"Oh, hi Misato!" said Asuka, rather cheerfully, considering she had been growling death threats at Toji just seconds before. "Who else is here? I see Hikari and the second member of the Three Stooges. Anyone else?" she inquired.

"Nope. Just us." Misato responded, still sounding a bit peeved.

"How's Wond- I mean, Rei?" she asked.

"Well... As far as we know, she's fine." replied Misato, kind of surprised that Asuka hadn't called Rei Wondergirl.

"Well, that's all fine and dandy" Asuka said, starting to sound annoyed "But when do I get the hell out of here?!"

"Soon, Asuka, soon!" Misato tried to soothe. "They need to run some more tests. But personally, I don't think they want you to leave until the others are awake."

Asuka grumbled at this, but accepted it nonetheless. "Well, when are those two going to wake up? I want to get out of here!"

"I am awake, Pilot Soryu." came a voice from the corner. It was Ayanami. "I have been awake for several minutes."

"Geez, Rei" muttered Toji "Don't scare us like that"

"I am sorry, Toji Suzuhara" Rei replied. "Is Pilot Ikari awake, yet?"

"No, Rei, not yet" sighed Misato "We're not really sure when he'll wake up."

Shinji Ikari, the Third Child, slowly regained consciousness. As his senses returned, he felt something on his cheek, kind of like.... someone's breath? He opened his eyes and saw a mass of red hair floating over him. Then he heard a shout, kind of like "Baka-Hentai!!", and felt something latch onto his face. It was Asuka and she was lowering her mouth to his, accompanied by catcalls from.... no, it couldn't be... those idiots Toji and Kensuke. Then Asuka's mouth hit his and they kissed.

A few seconds later, they disengaged, and Asuka said, in a choked up voice, "Welcome back, Baka." Then she promptly slapped him, and he passed out again.
