Within the first hour of space Yori was bored to death. While poking holes into the empty cup that had once held milk, he stared into the darkness of space. Yes, space was definitely boring. "Couldn't they show a movie or something?" He should have taken his sister up on her offer to let him borrow her portable holo screen, but no, like a fool he thought that he wouldn't need it. He'd already looked over the Eldarian files so there was nothing left for him to do.
"Stop complaining," Alana groaned. "It's bad enough we are stuck riding this for hours. Complaining is not needed."
"I wasn't complaining. I was simply stating that I would like some sort of service to be provided during this excruciating ride."
Alana grabbed one of the flight attendants. "Can I please be moved to another seat?"
"I'm sorry, we are all pack up."
Alana watched her walk away and she sunk into her seat.
Yori glared at her. "I said one thing! One thing and you already want to get rid of me." He shook his head as if he was hurt.
She reached over and rubbed his ears. "Will this get you to shut up?"
He smiled and purred. "Yes, that will do," he said as he relaxed in his seat and nuzzled her hand.
She smiled and watched him relax. A few hours later they were at their destination. Alana was amazed at how everything looked. Their cities towered high and their air smelled so clean. The plant life was beautiful. Alana thought it was the perfect place.
"This is the...'Paradise Zone'," Yori read, chomping down on whatever food they had given him as they existed. He had no idea what it was. It looked like a piece of paper yet it somehow tasted like sardines. He was amazed and perplexed at the same time. They had given them pamphlets apparently Illumia was a tourist attraction. Well, part of it was at least.
Looking up, he was greeted by a white specter with glowing eyes. "We are pleased to see that you arrived safely."
"We are pleased that you were willing to see us," Yori said, trying his best diplomatic response. The specter nodded and Yori looked to Alana. This was her job not his.
"Thank you so much for seeing us on such short notice. I hope that we haven't come at an inconvenient time," Alana said with a smile. "You planet is rather lovely. We are very honored to be here."
The specter nodded. At least it seemed to appear to nod. "We were informed of your condition Ms. Alana Homes. We hope that we will be able to help you. Please, if you will follow me this way I will show you to your living quarter."
Yori was much like a kid in a candy store as he looked at all the amazing things they had there. People were flying, actually flying! The technological advances they had were simply amazing! And while that was important, he was actually more interested in all the food he could smell. There were so many new kinds of things, he was going to have to try them all.
They were led to a strange archway. The specter stepped aside as the archway began to grow. "If you will step into the portal you will arrive at your living quarters."
"Portal?"
The specter nodded and stepped through the portal, disappearing in a glow of shimmering light.
Yori looked at Alana and smirked. "Well...this doesn't look dangerous at all." He winked at her, taking her hand as he pulled her through the portal with him. There was a shimmering feeling as his body was pulled apart and his genes and DNA were replaced as he was reformed at their home quarter.
Alana took her hand from him. She wished he would quit doing that. Looking around she was shocked. The place was...perfect. It had the perfect view of the city and there was plenty of room. Alana put her bag down to look around. "This is more than I though. We are very grateful." Since he had no hand to shake, she gave him a bow and smiled. "Please, what may we address you as?"
"My designation is Nex- 235857. However, if you wish you may simply refer to me as Nex."
"Nex it is then," Yori said. Their room was rather nice, though a bit on the excessive side for him. "So, when is it that we will begin examining the virus which is affecting the earth."
"Currently our science division is conversing over anti- matter thesis. They will convene in approximately three hours two minutes and twenty five seconds. Please feel free to do whatever you wish until that time."
Again Alana bowed, but this time she pulled Yori with her, forcing him to bow as well. "Thank you very much for your kindness. On behalf of my entire race, we are more than grateful."
Yori muttered beneath his breath as she forced him down. The specter seemed to laugh at that. At least, he thought he laughed. His eyes seemed to light up for a second as if he was laughing. Could Illumians even laugh?
"It is our pleasure. I will return when it is time to discuss the virus." With that the specter went to the portal in their room and disappeared in a flash of light.
"I have decided if that guy is cool or extremely freaky," Yori said as he stretched. "I guess I'll figure out tonight if I have nightmares about him."
Alana took their bags to the room and let out a sigh in relief. Two beds. Perfect. She chose one then started to unpack. She laid back on the bed and squeaked when it suddenly shifted to fit her form perfectly. When she moved, the mattress moved with her. Curling up in a ball, she couldn't help but purr. It was just perfect.
Yori walked to the bedroom and frowned when he saw two beds. Looking over at Alana, he smiled and leaned against the wall. Pushing himself off the wall he walked over and rubbed her ears as she purred. "Do you want to explore the city some or just sleep the day away?"
She moved into his hand. "Doesn't matter to me. Right now...I'm in heaven."
He smiled. She was letting him pet her. That was good, right? Scratching behind her ear he ran his hand over the bed. It felt weird to him, but then again a lot of things were weird to him here. "If you want to sleep, I can go look around and check the place out." When she didn't respond he had to kneel beside her to make certain that she was still awake. "Are the beds really that comfortable?"
Alana was out like a light. With the petting and the comfort it was hard not to sleep. More than half of the day was gone anyway since they flew there and in three hours they were meeting about her races' "condition." She mind as well get some sleep in before it was time. It could be a late night of testing.
Yori groaned when he realized she was sleeping. Pressing his lips to her's, he smirked and stood. "Fine, miss kitty. But don't blame me when you wake up hungry and I didn't save you any food." Leaving her there on the bed he went to the teleporter he stood in front of it, looking for a switch or something. How was he suppose to work this thing?
Three hours later Alana woke. She stretched out then stood and yawned. Looking at the time she groaned. How could she sleep that long!? The Illumians were to see her soon. She grabbed a fresh change of clothes and rushed to change and freshen up. She didn't hear or see Yori anywhere but wasn't too worried about it. He could skip, she couldn't.
There was a flash of light as Yori stumbled through the teleporter. In his arms were several bags full of Illumian technology. He sniffed and looked around until he found Alana. "About time Sleeping Kitty finally woke up," he smiled. "You missed out!" He set his bags on his bed and collapsed back, jumping up as the bed changed to accommodate him. "Wow...that is nice." Shaking his head he looked back at Alana. "This place.... I can't believe it. They have everything here! There's this piece of food they have, that mimics the taste of whatever you want at that moment. No matter what it is, it will taste how you want it to taste...only a hundred times better. I ate a sardine and nearly had an orgasm. It was wonderful!" Taking a deep breath he wiped a fake tear from his eyes. "I think I might be in love."
Alana only nodded. "That's nice, Yori," she said brushing out her hair then her tail. She put in some earrings then put some make up on. "Are you coming with or staying?"
Of course. She wasn't even paying the slightest bit of attention. Here he was trying to talk to her and she just ignored him. Wonderful. "Yeah," he sighed. "Why not? Might as well go find out whether or not the human race is fucked." Why did that simple action seem to put him in a bad mood? He should care, but actually he didn't. If she got bitchy he'd just complain that he didn't get any sleep.
She turned to him. "I have a lot resting on my shoulders, Yori. I'm not anything important on Earth but here I am trying to save my race," she said with narrow eyes. "What if it was your people, Yori?" She turned away from him and started to the portal to wait for Nex. "I'm sorry I'm not as excited about food when my race is at risk of extinction."
He rolled his eyes but didn't say a word. He'd just seethe and take out any pent up frustration at the virtual center. You could do anything there that your heart desired, and there were quite a few things that he could think that he desired at the moment. Going over to Alana he pointed at the portal. "We might as well go ahead to the science center. Took me awhile but I finally figured out how to work these things." He offered her his hand and sighed when she wouldn't take it. "Unless you want to end up missing a limb or half your body, just please hold on. Nex came by while you were passed out and told us to meet him there. Apparently they broke through space and time so he's too busy to come get us."
Alana sighed and took his hand. They stepped through and as soon as they were in the Science center, she dropped his hand. "Thanks," she said bluntly.
"You're welcome," he told her, trying his best to be cordial. Deciding to take the higher road, he figured he might as well try and break the sudden animosity. "Hopefully they will be able to fix the virus and get everyone back to how they were."
"We can only hope."
Some meet them and she bowed in thanks once more. They led them down a hall and up some stairs. Alana stood in front of a bunch of orbs after being led to a room. She looked back at Yori as they moved around her, brushing against her skin and tail. She moved about trying not to look uncomfortable, but it was hard. Were they studying her?
Yori leaned against the wall and watched as they surrounded her. There wasn't much he could but watch. These things were immortal beings of energy and science. If they couldn't figure out what to do then they were pretty much screwed.
One of the phantoms stood back and an orb flew away from Alana. The orb shimmered and spread out showering her DNA and the nanites. The eyes of the phantoms glowed as the nanites were singled out. Various data ran across the screen too fast for Yori to even make out. Somehow, these beings were able to comprehend it easily.
"This is most vexing." What appeared to be the lead phantom turned to Alana. "This virus has Illumina DNA all over it. It seems that virus was constructed here on our planet."
Alana's breath was caught. "But how can that be? Someone of your kind would have to be working with the people that did this to my kind," she said. "Is there anything you can do?"
"The virus is complex. It has many fail safes within it which would make tampering with it impossible without the death of the host. We can safely stop the spread of the virus now that we have its biological imprint; and given time we will be able to successfully create an antigen which will reverse the effects of the virus."
Yori's ears perked at this. It seemed that Alana was finally getting what she wanted. Good for her....
"I will assist you any way I can. I'm here just for your testing. You have full range on my body to do what it takes to fix my people," Alana said.
"Your body is not needed. We have the nanite programming. Working backwards from that we will be able to reconstruct an antidote within one hundred and twenty-six years. Given our current rate as well as the estimation and allocation for future projects, that should give us sufficient time to create an antidote that will reverse the effects without killing the host." The specter seemed pleased with that analysis. After all, they were immortal. Time was irrelevant to them.
"No!" Alana yelled. "You do not understand the severity of this! By that time, none of my people will be left! They will be forced to mate with Eldarians and eventually the human DNA will be gone! You can't honestly think that that is the best you can do! You hold the future of human kind in your hands! Doesn't that mean anything?" She couldn't believe what she was hearing. It was like they didn't even care. "Someone from your race helped create this! You owe it to my race to fix it before there is none of us left!"
"You misunderstand us child. The virus will not spread any further than it has already. Your race will continue to thrive and prosper as it always have. Our estimates is that less than one sixteenth of the human race has been affected by this virus. It is those who are already infected which will have to wait for the antidote to be created."
The specter moved over to her as the orbs darted away from her. "We understand the severity of this. We seek to keep all races from perishing and being driven into extinction. Your race shall have its antidote within the allotted time; and we shall look into whoever created this virus. However, your race is not in any immediate danger of extinction. There are several races within the universe which are; and they are of higher priority."
Alana just stood there watching them leave. That was it? That was all? What use were they at all? What help were they? She looked down at herself. So she was stuck like this for the rest of her life? Then again...Eldarians live ten times as long as humans so she would be around when the antidote find would be made...but what about her dreams? She wanted to carry children. She wanted to unite the two races with her being human. What changes could she make as an Eldarian. Nothing was right. Nothing was fair. She walked out of the door and down the stairs then down the hall. She didn't want to be there anymore. She was going home.
"Stop complaining," Alana groaned. "It's bad enough we are stuck riding this for hours. Complaining is not needed."
"I wasn't complaining. I was simply stating that I would like some sort of service to be provided during this excruciating ride."
