Love
The next couple of weeks seemed to go by so fast. I even enjoyed going to work, mostly because Adrian had been coming by the park again during my breaks. It has been so nice seeing him everyday. I feel like my heart expands for him with every passing moment. One day stood out in my mind. I saw him waiting by the apple tree for me and I just smiled to myself. I couldn't stop. I came out and we just enjoyed each others company. No words were even spoken. Our eyes and smiles just did the talking for us. I never felt so happy than in that moment. I knew we were destined to meet in this park that day. It seemed like fate was the reason that we kept meeting. I truly know what love feels like and I'm happily reminded each time he holds me in his arms in such the most gentle and protective manner. I am in love.
Today I get ready as I usually do. My apartment feels slightly empty, like there is something missing. I don't know what it is exactly. I just don't ever feel like being here. I've been thinking about the cabin more and more, and about how it felt to be so close to Adrian. Maybe this empty apartment just doesn't feel like home. I stop my thoughts from wandering further or I would be late to work again as usual. Silly little day dreams often get me into trouble. I just can't seem to get to work on time because of them, but I wouldn't trade them for anything.
I get to work at a reasonable time and hurry along with my morning routine of going through mass amounts of paperwork and checking in my various designated patients. When I finally get to take a break I hurry along to the park. I couldn't wait to see Adrian again, maybe we will think of something interesting to do this weekend since today is Friday. I hurry out the door with that thought in mind and see; nothing. No one was in the park, not even Adrian. I sighed sadly and went to go sit in my usual spot. I wonder where he could be today. It's not like he promised to see me at my morning breaks. I'm being silly; he does have a life too. I tried to cheer myself up and sighed again and looked up into the tree I was leaning against. That's when I saw something rather odd. I got up and looked closer and my eyes had not mistaken me. It was a single red rose with a little note attached to it. My face instantly lit up, it had to have been from Adrian.
I took the rose and breathed in its fragrant smell and I wondered how he knew these were my favorite. I then took the note and opened it. It was a very peculiar note and didn't say much. I wondered what he was planning.
Gwen,
The dead of winter takes the life of spring.
No more flowers blooming beneath the sun.
The earth frozen underneath the pale snow.
Yet a single rose stands alone.
Follow the rose petals.
Adrian
I kept rereading his little note, not understanding what it all meant. I went back to work and continued to think about it and almost didn't realize that the day had ended. Grabbing my things I say my goodbyes and head out the door of the hospital. The wind had really picked up and my things almost blew away, but that's when I realized something. Something was blowing in the wind; rose petals. I reached down and picked one up and looked ahead and saw a man by a vehicle as if waiting for someone. I walked toward him and he gave a slight bow.
“Gwendolyn I presume. Please hop in,” the driver said while opening the door where I saw another single red rose with a note laying on the seat.
I looked from the driver to the seat and got in taking the rose into my hand and quickly opened the note.
Gwen,
A blizzard forms showing winter's fury.
Cold winds blow as more snow falls.
Ice forms on the single rose.
Alas it still stands tall.
The petals will show you the way.
Adrian
I read and reread the note several times as the driver drove off to a place unknown. Now I was sure that Adrian had something in mind but exactly what was beyond my minds comprehension.
“Before we make our final destination there is one stop we have to make first,” the driver said while looking back at me. I must have looked completely dumbfounded for he smiled and laughed slightly as he returned to driving. We soon came to a stop and the driver then got my door and led me into a nice little shop where a lady was waiting for my arrival.
“Hello Gwendolyn. There is a gift for you inside,” she said while pointing to inside her store. It was a store full of wonderful fabrics and a few dresses. The lady must have been the creator of the fine clothing. I looked around the store a bit and then found a dress bag with a note card attached. The card had my name written on the front. Adrian you have done way to much, I thought to myself with a smile. I quickly unzipped the dress bag and found a magnificent red dress inside. I held it in front of me and was speechless. I didn't know what to even think at the moment and I think the shopkeeper realized this and directed me to the changing area. The dress fit perfectly as if it were made for me, wait it probably was made for me. I just stared at myself in the mirror. I never imagined wearing such a dress before, yet it suited me so well.
The whole ordeal almost brought me to tears but the driver soon brought me back to reality, “come miss we still have to reach our destination.” I then thanked the shopkeeper and got back into the vehicle. The driver soon drove off. I didn't know what to think or feel, I was completely overwhelmed. I never imagined my day going this way when I awoke this morning. At best I was going to see Adrian during my break and we would make plans, but nothing like this. I wondered why he would go through so much trouble for me.
I soon noticed the scenery outside changing as flashes of green light came through the window. I looked outside and realized we had reached the country. Could the driver be taking me to the cabin? I thought to myself. I continued to look outside for some recollection of where I was; unfortunately I was horrible at directions and never paid attention much to my surroundings while Adrian and I drove to his cabin. Soon I did get an indication as I saw the path leading up to his home; our home in a sense. The driver soon came to a stop and got the door once again for me. As I stepped out of the car I noticed rose petals sprinkled along the path up to the cabin. As the note stated I followed them.
As I walked along the rose covered path I had this feeling of being completely overwhelmed. I never imagined Adrian to be such a romantic guy. Yes he was very sweet majority of the time, but this was greater than any dream. Maybe I was dreaming. I even pinched myself just in case but all I felt was a slight pain on my arm as I remained standing where I was. I smiled to myself as I started to walk closer to the cabin. I finally make it to the door and found another long stem red rose tied to the handle along with a third note. I removed the rose and added it to the others that I was carrying. I then opened the note and read the words that were inside:
Gwen,
The rose remains as if untouched.
Never showing signs of wilting.
As new as its first day of life.
The everlasting rose.
Just one more journey my love.
Adrian
My heart began to flutter as I walked inside. I couldn't wait to see him. I missed him even though we had only been separated for a day's time. Was it obsession that I was feeling? No, a crude word such as that could never explain the way I felt. It was love. I was in love with Adrian and only him. He was the only thing in life that has made me feel so complete. Yes love was the answer.
As I walked the hall inside the cabin it appeared magical with all the candles lit to show my way. I felt like I was glowing from the flames radiant dance. Soon I made it to the living room and saw him. I stopped and knew my mouth must have opened for the slightest gasp left my lips. He stood there in the middle of the room which was decorated with petals upon the floor and candles all around. Adrian was dressed in a dark suit holding another long stem rose in his hand. None of that truly fazed me. It was the look in his eyes that captured me. His eyes which had been so mysterious before now glistened with love, the love that he held for me. It brought my own eyes to tear up, but I fought the urge to let them fall.
Slowly he walked towards me and then stopped. He was so close, yet so far away. I wanted him so much closer to me, as close as anyone can be to a person. He looked into my eyes lovingly and brought his hand up to my cheek in a gentle caress. He then lowered his own lips softly kissing mine.
“Happy Birthday my dear Gwen,” he whispered in my ear as he then brought his eyes to capture mine once again.
I looked at him with an almost confused, shocked gaze. Birthday…oh it is my birthday. How could I have forgotten, I thought to myself. I then blushed with this realization and looked at him.
“You forgot didn't you,” he said with a smile and a gentle laugh.
I couldn't help but laugh myself, “Yes I guess I have forgotten, I don't even remember telling you when it was.”
“Hmm that I guess will have to remain a secret, because you never did tell me,” he said with a smirk.
I gave him a confused look, “I didn't…then…then how did you find out,” I questioned.
He shook his head, “And why would I ever reveal such good sources.”
“Oh ok fine keep your resources to yourself,” I said playfully.
“Well we shouldn't just stand here, or our dinner will get cold,” he said as he placed the rose on a nearby table. He then took my hand in his as he led me to the kitchen. The tiny dining table was adorned with a nice table cloth sprinkled with a few petals with a single candle covering it with light. He took me to my chair and as the gentleman he was seated me, but not leaving my side until he left a gentle kiss upon my neck. He then took his place across from me as we both began to eat the wonderful meal he had prepared.
Dinner seemed to last for hours with so much conversation. I ended up talking about my own family history and how much I have missed my dad. He would always give me a doll on my birthday, one that he would get as he traveled. He would travel to some of the worse areas of the states trying to help in anyway he could. He always felt that somehow he could make a difference by just being there to support others that were less fortunate as he was. I admired him so and treasured ever doll. I soon realized that I had drifted off in thought for Adrian had stopped talking and was staring at me.
“Are you ok?” he asked with concern.
I looked at him with a smile, “I'm fine.”
He smiled at me and then got up and grabbed something that was inside one of the kitchen drawers.
“Now for your gift,” he said while sliding a small wrapped box to me on the table.
“But Adrian, you have already done enough,” I looked at him, my face turning red as he smiled back at me.
“Its ok, it's just a small gift. Just open it ok?” he looked at me. I could see excitement in his eyes.
“Ok if you insist,” I said as I started to unwrap the small box. When I opened the box I froze from what I saw inside. All I could do was stare at it.
Adrian looked at me trying to figure out what my reaction was. “Is it ok? Do you like it? I've been meaning to give it to you for awhile now.”
I looked up at him as my eyes started to water over. I smiled, for what was in the box was a key. If the key wasn't enough, attached to the key was this angelic doll keychain. I couldn't help but think of my father when I saw it. It also reminded me of the previous time where I had wanted my father to just hold me in his arms and then was surprised to see Adrian there instead. It's almost as though my father had sent this man to me. Thank you, I thought to myself as a tear rolled down my cheek.
Finally I found my voice again and replied to him, “It's perfect.” I started to wipe the tear from my cheek when Adrian took my hand in his. With the other he gently wiped my tears away. I closed my eyes as I took in the feel of his hand against my skin, so warm and gentle.
“I'm glad you like your gift. I wanted to give you the key to this place the first day I brought you here. The cabin seemed a much warmer place the moment you entered it. It seemed like its old self once again. From that day I knew this was as much your home as it was mine,” he spoke softly.
I opened my eyes which were instantly captured by his. We both stared into each other in pure silence. I could feel a magnetic pull happening between us as we both inched slowly closer to each other. I closed my eyes awaiting his loving kiss but was jolted awake from the dream like state as a flash of lightening followed by a large rumble of thunder came from the sky.
We both had looked outside and were breathing a bit heavier from the sudden fright. We then looked at each other and couldn't help but laugh. I stopped and smiled at him and then got up from my seat taking his hand in mine. “Come.”
As I took him out side I could feel his hand squeeze mine and then drift up to his lips. I looked at him and blushed. I went and sat us in the porch swing. He placed an arm around me and brought me close to him. I instantly leaned against him and sighed happily. Another flash of lightening went across the sky as the rain began to fall. It was a perfect summer storm. The air felt so warm and moist against our skin.
“I love to watch the sky during a storm. It displays such raw emotion. Mother nature at her finest I suppose,” I said with a chuckle.
“Hmm you are turning into a lovely little poet, my dear Gwen” he squeezed me gently and kissed the top of my head.
I looked up at him and soon got up. He looked at me a bit perplexed. I then went down the steps and ran out into the rain and started to spin around with my arms reaching up to the sky.
“What in the world are you doing?” Adrian asked from the porch rail.
“I'm embracing the poet in me by dancing in the rain. Will you come and join me?” I said sweetly.
Adrian gave a look like I was crazy but then followed me out into the storm. I began to twirl around some more but then he took my hand and pulled me to him holding me in an embrace. He then lightly started to rock me as we slowed danced underneath the night sky letting the rain fall upon us.
“I love you Gwen,” he said so deeply that I pulled back some and looked up into his eyes. He then leaned down and kissed me; a kiss of happiness, passion, and love. When he finally broke the kiss he spoke again. “I think we better get you out of this rain before you catch a cold”
I went to start walking back to the porch but before I could move one step further he lifted me up into his arms and carried me back to the cabin. He then proceeded to carry me to my room he had given me last time. Then he sat me upon the bed and went to get a towel. I began to shiver at the sudden removal of his warming embrace. Soon he returned and wrapped a towel around me.
“I will let you get dried off and dressed,” he said as he got up and started for the door. As if with a mind of its own my hand grabbed his arm and he turned to look at me.
“Please don't go,” I said softly as I looked up at him, wanting him, more than I ever thought possible. I wanted to be close to him again, but closer. I wanted to feel his touch on my skin. I wanted us to express our love for each other.
He kneeled back down bringing us face to face. He gave me a look of uncertainty. I then reached out my hands and brought his lips to mine. “Make love to me Adrian,” I softly whispered into his ear. He pulled back a bit shocked which soon diminished as he looked into my eyes, knowing what I asked was really what he heard. He then captured my lips with his as he let them answer for him.
As we both melted into each others kiss he slowly unzipped my dress and slid it off my moist skin. Every touch of his hands my skin seemed to heat up as if it were on fire. He removed my dress and soon lifted me up slightly in his arms and laid me gently on the bed. Soon he was undressed himself and then returned his lips to mine who had missed his dearly. His hands soon wandered and explored every inch of my skin. His touch was intoxicating. My hands soon started their own exploration as I began to memorize every inch of him with my touch. He then wrapped his arms around me and looked down into my eyes with a small smile. “I love you,” was all that was said as he began to make love to me.
I was so overwhelmed by all the feelings that were being sent to my mind. The way we moved together we seemed as one. Our two hearts were beating in a syncopated rhythm. Every movement he made with his body I mirrored with my own. Tiny beads of sweat began to form joining the tiny rain droplets that still remained on our skin. The room felt like it was spinning as our movements increased their speed, our hearts following as well. It almost felt as if my heart would soon beat itself out of my chest it was pounding so hard. Our breathing became heavier as our hands joined; we were one.
Adrian soon moved to the other side of the bed bringing me into his arms as we both just looked at each other in silence. All that could be heard was a soft panting coming from both of us; though I could swear that he could hear my heart beating it still pounded so hard inside my chest. I smiled up at him, “I love you Adrian.” He smiled down at me and closed his eyes. I smiled at how content he looked and soon found my own eyelids becoming so heavy that no matter how hard I fought them they finally won. As my eyes closed I laid my head down upon his chest and soon we both drifted off to sleep.
