Sickness
All I can see is darkness. What is that noise? Wedding bells? The shadows soon dissipate as I'm standing at the alter once again.
How did I get here? I thought to myself. I look around the church and see no one until I look in front of me. It was a man in a suite like before.
“Who are you?” I asked the man. He slowly turned around and instead of shadows for a face; it was the face of Adrian.
I quickly sat up out of my sleepy state. I was covered in sweat and completely naked which I soon realized. I had almost forgotten what had happened yesterday and last night, though I don't know how I would ever forget. Looking next to me I saw the still frame of the man I love. A smile took over my face as I lay back down against my pillow. My thoughts soon drifted to my recurring dream. Finally there is a face to the man in my dream, but the man seemed much different than previously. I wonder what it all means, I thought to myself.
Adrian stirred slightly and wrapped one of his arms around my waist bringing me closer to him. Being in his arms is one of the best experiences ever. The little ways he touches me brings me the greatest feeling imaginable. I love every ounce of him. I soon take his hand in mine and curl up close to him with my head below his chin; we seemed to fit perfectly together.
The next month seemed to fly by. Adrian and I were able to spend some time together, but both our lives required of us much attention so we were not able to see each other as much as we both would have liked. Being a doctor can be time consuming and Adrian always seemed to have some meeting with his editor that he had to go to. I understood and cherished every moment I was able to spend with him. Unfortunately I am stuck in my apartment with the flu bug. Even though I have some time off I am still unable to see Adrian. Well he wants to come over, its more that I don't want him to risk the chance of getting sick. So for now I am stuck flipping through the channels and getting hooked to daytime soap operas while curled up on the couch.
Just when Ricky was about to confess to Margaret that he was really a she someone knocks on my door. Saved by the knock. I weakly remove myself from the couch and answer the door and am taken over by laughter. There stood Adrian with scrubs and a medical mask on, standing in my doorway.
“What in the world are you doing here? I thought I told you to stay home.” I said through a bit of laughter.
“Well, I couldn't let you rot away alone in your apartment, so some of your coworkers decided to help me out,” his voice was a bit muffled but his eyes smiled at me.
“Ok well I guess you can come in just don't get too close,” I smirked.
“Alright I promise. Anyways I come with a purpose,” he said as he sat on the couch and looked to the TV. “Soap operas?” he eyed me.
“Well when you are sick and this is your only source of entertainment than yes, besides it was just getting good when you decided to show up,” I sat on the couch as well.
“I see well if it's a bad time I can always just leave,” He starts to get up but I soon grab him and pull him back to the couch, he then looked at me with those smiling eyes. “I'm just teasing. As I said before I came with a purpose.”
“Yes you did say that once already and now you have my curiosity fully elevated. What is this purpose you speak of? Hmm?” I looked at him curiously.
“You really don't know do you?” he spoke with a more serious tone.
“Did something happen that I should know about?” I asked him.
“Well yes, something did happen and I'm a bit surprised you don't know about it. Do you ever wonder why Drake never went after you when he was so set on you marrying him? Since that day in your apartment he hasn't contacted you at all right?” he asked with concern evident in his voice.
“No I have not seen or heard from him since then. Did something happen to Drake? Have you seen him?” my heart began to beat faster at the talk about Drake. It was true I had not even heard from him or really even thought about him since Adrian and I became a couple. I just had a bad feeling once Adrian brought up his name.
“I have not personally seen him, but” he paused briefly “but he has been in the newspapers lately.” Adrian then opened up his briefcase and took out a newspaper and handed it to me which I took with shaky hands.
I slowly unfold the newspaper and gasped as I saw Drake's face on the cover. I almost dropped the newspaper at the site of him. I must have still been shaken by what had happened in the apartment months ago. I thought I would never see his face again but there he was right on the cover of the newspaper. After a brief pause as I look over the picture, I start to read the article.
“Drake has been arrested?” I looked up at Adrian with shock.
“Yes according to sources he was arrested for money laundering within the company he worked for. I guess it's been going on for years and he finally got caught.” He looked at me with some concern in his eyes.
I stared at the article. I guess I truly never knew the real you Drake, I thought to myself.
“At least you won't have to worry about him anymore. He will be put away for many years,” he spoke as he took my hand in his.
I look from our hands to his face; his eyes still seemed to smile at me. I soon wrapped my arms around him not caring how close we were. I needed his comfort which he soon granted me as he wrapped his own arms around me, taking me in closer.
Oh that feeling is coming back again, I soon pull away from him and excused myself as I hurried to the bathroom to relieve my nausea. After I finally compose myself I come back out to the living room where I find Adrian standing near the window. As soon as he heard me enter he turned to look at me with worry.
“Have you gone to see a doctor yet?” he questioned.
“No” I said rather stubbornly as I went to sit back down on the couch.
“Will you promise me if you are not better by morning you will go and see someone” he sat next to me placing his hand against my forehead and gently moving it down to caress my cheek.
“Ok fine. I will tomorrow morning.” I sighed and he laughed then took me into his arms once again.
“Well I should let you rest my love so you can be well enough for this weekend,” he said as he pulled away.
“What's this weekend?” I look at him curiously.
“Well I thought you might want to see the cabin since it is now officially done,” he smirked.
“What it's finished? But I barely helped out?” I eyed him.
“Let's just say I hired some extra help since both you and I were kind of busy, but there is one last thing to do and I want you to be there to help with that; and that will be left as a surprise,” he started to get up and go to the door.
“Ok leave me you man of mystery.” I laugh.
He just smiled and blew me a kiss through the hospital mask. I laughed and returned the kiss and he soon walked out the door. After he left I couldn't stop smiling and soon drifted to sleep.
I didn't wake until the next morning and unfortunately I didn't feel any better. As promised I dragged myself out of my apartment and went to see my doctor. Once at the hospital I went through the routine paper work and preliminary tests. Now all that was left was for me to wait on the cold hospital bed for the doctor to come in and tell me what was wrong with me.
This didn't take as long as I thought. Soon the doctor came in with a warm smile on her face and repeated back to me a few of my symptoms to make sure she knew everything that I was experiencing; nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite, and what little I could stand to eat would always make a second appearance.
She then smiled at me and proceeded to ask me a question I had never considered. “Could you be pregnant by any chance?”
I stared at her in shock at what she just said but then started to think about when my last menstruation was. It had been over a month ago. I then tried to think about the nights I spent with Adrian and whether we had taken in account safety precautions. I then looked back at her still in shock.
“Ok well then we will do a couple more tests just to make sure.” She then took the needed samples and left for them to be tested; leaving me with only my thoughts.
What if I am pregnant? What will Adrian think? We have not been together for that long. What if this scares him away? Besides am I ready for such a responsibility? I thought to myself and then without thinking placed a hand gently against my stomach. What am I thinking? Adrian will be so happy and excited with this news. He loves me and I know we can work this out together. I smiled at the thought of us being parents and soon was full of excitement and happiness at the idea of being pregnant that I even found myself hoping and wishing for a positive answer.
It felt like hours until the doctor came back; still wearing that bright warm smile. “Well I have the results from your test and indeed you are pregnant. This pretty much explains the way you have been feeling since you are a month along and morning sickness and fatigue are to be expected,” she spoke as she flipped through my paperwork. All I could think about was how happy I was. I'm pregnant. I can't believe this is happening. Did she say a month? That means. I placed both of my hands on my stomach as tears welled up in my eyes I thought to myself, you little one were created in the cabin, our family's home.
The doctor finished up my paperwork and recommended another doctor and had me make my first appointment with them before I left. I couldn't wait to leave. I felt better already with the news, but I still was slightly tired. I wondered when and how I should tell Adrian and soon thought of the perfect time. I'll tell him when we go and visit the cabin. That will be perfect.
I found myself counting down the hours till the weekend, which only made the time seem to go by even slower. I did have to lie to Adrian that day when he called me up about my doctor's visit. I had to tell him that it was just a little flu bug and that I was feeling well enough to spend time with him this weekend. It was the hardest lie to tell since I was beaming from ear to ear while on the phone with him. I loved him so much and the idea of starting a family with him just excited me more.
I didn't hear from him for the rest of the week and figured he must be busy trying to finish up his work so he can make it out this weekend. Soon Friday came around and I still didn't hear from him. I even tried calling his house and his cell phone and still didn't reach him. That's odd. He would usually at least return my phone calls when he could. A small part of me started to worry.
Ring Ring…Ring Ring…The phone soon broke me from my thoughts. That must be him.
“Well it's about time you return my calls” I answered.
“Sorry this isn't who you expected. Is this Gwendolyn?” a voice asked on the other end of the phone.
“Yes this is Gwen. Who is this that I am speaking to?” I asked, a bit confused that it wasn't Adrian on the other end.
“This is Dr. Aldrich. I'm calling you on regards of Adrian. We needed to contact someone and you were the only name listed on his cell. We need you to come to the hospital.”
I froze as I heard the voice on the phone. I soon looked at my caller ID and it revealed that the person was calling from Adrian's cell. I dropped the phone not knowing what to think. All that could be heard was the voice still coming from the phone.
“Miss? Are you still there? It's urgent. Adrian is in critical condition.”
