Chapter Seven

Robin awoke sometime in the wee hours of the night, and found herself on the couch. After her shower, she had gone and sat in the livingroom in a towel to wait for Amon to return home, and had fell asleep watching a program on television.

She shivered a little, as she realized that the towel had fell off of her, and she had not awoken until now. She sat up and listened to the empty apartment, hoping to hear the familiar sounds of the man somewhere in its confines. She did not hear anything, as all the reached her was a very big silence.

Picking up her communicator, she put in her man’s secret number and waited. Once more, the voice mail recording came on, telling her that the digital storage was full. She groaned a little, as this was the fiftieth time she had tried his number, and she had never once gotten a hold of him. She was beginning to worry about him all over again. This was not like him, she had to admit to herself.

She decided to move to the bedroom, and slip in between the sheets. Her bare body was craving some warmth, and not just from the blankets, but in the absence of her man, that would just have to do for the time being. Clicking off the television and making sure she had her communicator just in case he did call, she headed back to the room, hoping it would not be long until he showed up finally.

She turned on the television that was in the bedroom, hoping to keep herself awake until he came. She really just wanted to tell him what was going on, yet she was frightened. Should she also voice her suspicions that his powers had awakened, or something else? She took a long sigh, knowing that once he was in front of her, that decision would have to be made and she hoped that she could make the right one.

Cuddling herself in the warmth of the bed, she just started her solitary vigil, hoping that she was wrong. An old movie was on television, on she had seen quite awhile back in Italy. That would occupy her mind, she told herself.

An hour later, she heard a knock on the apartment door. She looked at the time, and saw it was nearing three in the morning. She thought it might be Touko, but it did not make any sense. Touko had told her yesterday that she was taking another day off and going to a resort on an island, off the coast with her boyfriend.

Why would she still be here, and knocking on her door like this, she asked herself. She listened more intently, as the knocks went in clusters, and concluded that who ever was knocking, by that sound... it was not the dark haired woman. That was strange, and a little bit scary at this time of night.
Getting up, she hurriedly put on her robe, and went out to answer the knocking door, hoping it would be Amon who had just lost his keys. She did not think so, but her heart really wanted that to be it.

When she opened the door, she found no one out there. She peered out into the dimly lit landing to the apartment, and saw no sign of anyone. She listened, and even that did not explain anything. It was as if no one had been there all along.

She was just going to turn back in, she stepped on something. She glanced down at her bare feet and saw she was standing on a envelope on the floor. She picked it up, and saw it was addressed to her, and her heart skipped a beat or two. The handwriting was Amon’s bold and broad stroked writing. She knew it anywhere.

She snatched it from the ground and retreated into the apartment, locking the door as she did. She was shaking with anticipation, as she hurried into the bedroom to read it by the better light in there.

The note was short, and she read it ravenously.
“ Robin. Meet me tomorrow evening at eight at behind the noodle place near Nagira’s office. I will explain everything then. Do not tell no one or bring anyone with you. Love, Amon.”

Robin was puzzled by the man’s note. Why was he being so cloak and dagger like? Why wait until tomorrow evening? She yearned for his touch and his kisses and to lighten her heart of what was happening, but also wanted to know just what the hell was going on with is odd behavior. None of this made sense.

She just threw off her robe, deciding that she just as well might try and get some sleep, for the baby’s sake. She was crawling in to bed, when the communicator went off. She jumped and answered.

To her disappointment, it was Michael.
“ Did I wake you?” He asked.
“ I have not gotten to sleep yet.” She replied.
“ No sign of Amon?” He asked.
“ No call from him.” She said, hesitant to tell the lad about the odd note that was at her doorstep, but knew she may have to trust him after she met Amon.

The lad seemed to be a little on edge, as his words had a very noticeable tightness in it tone.
“ Did you finish what you were doing for me?” Robin asked.
“ No I have not... that will take some time.” He said, then quickly spoke. “ I just wanted to give you a head’s up from here.”

The way the youth had just said his last statement, caused Robin to feel a chill run down her spine. She did not really know why she got that sensation, but she knew, the lad had some information.
“ What is it?” She asked.

The lad paused for a moment, then his voice turned into a whisper.
“ A man dressed in a dark suit and carrying a large book under one arm came in earlier this evening, and met with the Chief.” He said, not mincing his words. “ He is from SOLOMON headquarters.”
“ From SOLOMON?” The young hunter girl echoed. “ Why would someone from there, be here in the dead of night.’
“ Beats me.” The lad replied. ‘ He met with the Chief for over a hour and a half, then left.”

Robin found that odd, as SOLOMON very rarely sent their people out like this, opting for the services of them... the Hunters. This was big, even though she did not know the nature of what this man was here for. She had a horrible thought pop into her head... was Amon under SOLOMON’s scrutiny now? If he was, for what? The explosions, or other dealings?

Robin just sighed, as she mind was spinning.
“ One more thing, Robin.” The youth said. “ Before the Chief left after that, he wanted me to tell you to be in at two tomorrow Afternoon.”
“ What is that all about.” She asked, then she thought about it. “ At two... that is a strange time, Michael.”
“ If I knew what it was all about, I’d tell you.” Said a very frustrated Michael over the line. “ That is all he said.”
“ He usually tells you why, doesn’t he not?”
“ Mostly, but not now.” The hacker lad said, going quieter. “ This is very strange indeed.”

The lad got off the line, and robin put the communicator back on the sidetable. This was turning out to be a mystery right inside the STN-J itself. She was worried though, the last time she had heard that people from SOLOMON showing up like this, Amon said that was when he was ordered to hunt his old partner down. Her stomach flipped a few times, as one thought was flashing through her mind. She might be ordered to hunt Amon down. She knew she could not do that.

Even though she was fearful of the possibility, she layed herself into bed once more. She needed to get some sleep, for the baby- and herself too. She hoped in the morning, that this possibility was not going to become a reality.

With in the next hour, she somehow did fall asleep, but her dreams were dark and scary. In them, she had set Amon on fire with her craft. Each time, she woke up screaming. Each time, there was no one to tell her that they were just dreams, and she would have to calm herself and fall back asleep once more.
