Chapter Eight
The three Hunters arrived at the very run down apartment block with in twenty minutes of leaving the offices. They stood out in the rain together, planning out to see if the witch would be home in this rundown building.Robin shivered, as the rain was beginning to chill her to the bone. She sneezed a few times, as the rain was actually going up her nose. Miho looked at the girl, as they waited for Michael to cone on line on their headsets.
“ That is all she needs...” Miho commented to herself, seeing the girl.
Michael came on and he was calm of voice.
“ I am sending you the floor plan that was on file at city hall.” He said, then halted. He came back with a little more excitement in his speech. “ I am picking up movement around back in the alley from the scanner modes on your communicators.”
“ Is it him?” Karasuma asked.
“ I am not sure, but my gut says yes.” The hacker lad said.
Karasuma looked at the others and nodded.
“ Haruto, swing around to the other end of the alley, see if it’s a through fare or not...” She said, then looking over to her left. “Robin, you follow me. We have to check it out.”
Both of the hunter woman’s partners nodded and the three of them hurried off to do their assignments in silence.
Miho and Robin cautiously round the building, The woman out front, pulls her weapon and checks that she had the ORBO hanging around her neck. Robin slips on her glasses and kept close to the woman. With that, the two were ready to proceed.
The back alley was dark in the pouring rain, obscuring everything in it’s liquid blindfold. Miho could not see a thing through the curtain of water that fell, but knew they had to press on. She squinted, trying to capture sight of anything.
“ This rain is not helping things.” She mumbled into her mouthpiece.
“ Your telling me...” Haruto commented in her ear. “ I thing I saw a duck begging for a raincoat.”
Miho found her partner’s comment very unhumorous at this point of time. She hope that the boy was doing his job out there, if it was the witch they were hunting, they would need him as the backup. The hunter woman paused for a second as she looked back, making sure the girl was right behind her as she entered the Alley. The girl was, and was following silently, which suited Miho.
Though the sheets of rain, the two female hunters saw a shadow moving in a circle under the back light of a door. He was totally oblivious to the cold and wetness of the day, and was ranting and raving to himself incoherently, swearing and cursing the only word that could be made out.
Miho pointed tho the man, and Robin nodded. From what they knew of the witch, this could very well be the one.
Their suspicions were correct, as the man shouted at a trash disposal unit near the apartment block, as if it was attacking him. The unit began to glow with a sparkling light that lit up the rain around it, then almost as if a beer can in the hands of a weightlifter, it was crushed into a lump of metal and garbage.
Miho moved in, the weapon raised at shoulder height. This was for sure, the witch they were going for.
“ Hold it...” She yelled through the raindrops that rolled off of her face.
The man turned and looked at the two in front of them.
“ Puny fucking bitches... why are you trying to stop my fun?” He cackled, his voice almost unrecognizably human. “ Perhaps I need to take care of you!!”
Before Miho could react, the man attacked. The glow wrapped around the lady, and she gasped. The force was crushing her, pushing her breath out of her. The pain she was having was like nothing she had never felt before. She could feel the glow literally crushing her like a gigantic vice around her thin body. The ORBO was not working.
Robin stepped forward and stared right at the man. A split second later, the man’s arm burst into flames. With his attention gone, Miho fell to the ground. She was very still, yet the loud gasping coming from her, signaled to Robin that she was still very much alive.
The witch screamed and flung his coat off, getting the flames off of him. He looked at the young girl that was staring him down and screamed at her.
“ Damn you little slut!!” He said, as he shot his power out at the girl. “ Have another one... on me!”
The flaming barrier that Robin hastily put up blocked the power, much to the dismay of the witch. The man bellowed in outrage and took out his frustration by attacking again with his full fury focused. This time, Robins barrier did hold again, causing the man to explode in rage once more, as the barrier was also protecting the fallen girl of the two.
Haruto came up behind the man from the other side of the alley from the gloom. The man turned after hearing the approach of the young lad, but Haruto fired three shots in succession, giving the witch no time to react..
Two bullets hit the man squarely, causing him to spin and hit the ground with a throaty yell of frustration then silence. The third bullet ricochet off of what was left of the garbage bin next to the man. It shot off into another direction upwards and hit a old and unused air conditioning unit attached to one window on the second floor.
With a loud snap of overloaded metal which pierced the roar of the rain, the rusted brackets that held it up gave way under the weight of the dirty unit. Free from its mooring to the brick, it toppled from the second story window, free falling directly to where the youngest hunter stood.
Robin could not dodge out of the way in time, not even having time to use her power to do anything. The heavy large metal box of a cooling machine came crashing down on the girl. Her gasp of horror, cut short as the thing landed with a sickening sound that echoed through out the alley.
Miho, was just finally gaining her feet after the attack she had endured. She looked over, and watched the large object hit the girl.
“ ROBIN!!!” She called out, as the girl went down under the metal housing of the unit.
The fallen girl layed there, as the large metal box had landed on her back. She was motionless, her head bleeding from a nasty cut on the forehead and her breathing shallow.
Miho gasped and called out into the mike at her mouth, as she got down on the wet cement with the girl.
“ Hunter down....Hunter down!!!” She cried out, trying to move the thing with her hands, with little luck.
“ What?” Said Michael, shocked at what he heard.
“ Robin is down... send and ambulance.” She said. “ NOW!!”
“ It has been dispatched, along with SOLOMON for witch pick up.” The lad said in a strained voice
Haruto came over and the two lifted the thing right off of the girl, tossing it with a crash into the wall.
Miho put a hand on Robin’s back, as the youth looked on with great concern.
“ Is she still breathing?” Haruto asked, puffing from the exertion of removing the huge unit off of the girl’s crumpled form.
The hunter woman checked on the girl, her face a mask of concern.
“ Barely!” Was the only word the lady spoke, putting her coat over the wet form in front of her. “ She needs help and help now.” She turned to look down, and whispered to herself with growing anger. “ Where in the hell are you, Amon?”
With Miho tending to Robin, Haruto raced back to check on the downed witch. He found the man almost dead, his powers eliminated by the orbo bullets. He snuffed and turned to look back at the two at the far end of the way.
The lad could not help thinking to himself one major question: Was this all worth it?
