Chapter Six- Head on

A solitary black car sat near a large park on the outskirts of a developing suburb of the ever growing populous Tokyo city. The car had it’s lights turned off, except for the roof mounted interior light. It shone like a star in the darkness of the night, bathing it’s lone occupant with soft white light..

In the car sat Amon, quietly contemplating something he was holding in his large hand. A cigarette was going in the other hand, as he sat. The man was motionless, matching the darkness that surrounded the car.

The man was unmoving as he looked at the something in his hand. His eyes never moving from the things that he had, but taking drags off of his smoke every so often. He sat back in the seat, seeming not very comfortable in the car.

The man took a drag of his smoke, and let a plume of grey go out to the inside of his car. He seemed to be almost downcast in a way, as his usual stoic seriousness was lacking in his dark orbs. He sighed and just returned to the thing in his hand.

A knock on the passenger side window broke Amon from his personal thoughts. He looked up, half expecting to see a police officer there, seeing just why he was parked out there alone in the dead of night.

He looked out of the car, and he got a rather large shock. Standing there, cloaked partially in the night, was Touko. He raised an eyebrow slightly, wondering just why the woman was there.

She opened the car door and plopped herself in the seat before Amon had time to actually think about it. The man was shocked at this little piece of nerve, yet seeing the woman’s face in the light of the interior, he knew this was no social call. He closed his hand a little, hiding whatever he had from the visitor.

The woman turned to face the man, her eyes showing a multitude of emotions that the woman was probably having. She wasted no time in idle chit-chat.
“ What is going on then?” She spat with vengeance. “ Tell me... What is going on?”

Taken aback by the woman’s blast of incomprehensible words at him, he looked at the woman with a confused scowl on his square face.
“ Going on?” He questioned, pausing to wait for some answer to come, and to be more legibly. “ Touko, you have to be more specific than that...”

The woman just took a breath, seeming getting annoyed with the man all over again.
“ What is going on between you and Robin?” She clarified.
“ Me and Robin?” He echoed, still not understanding the question. “ You are making no sense at all.”

Touko took a deep breath, as she found herself angrier than she ever had been before with the man. She paused to calm herself down, knowing she had to be more clear.
“ I just left my apartment, there is a young girl there crying uncontrollably in her room.” She said in one breath. “ I heard her cry out your name when she was sobbing, clear as a bell. Can you explain that to me?”
“ Young girls often cry for no reason... you know that all too well...” Answered the man, his face showing actual pain, despite his words. “ Did you not do that as a young girl?”

Touko gasp in shock, hearing the man.
“ You have known Robin for quite some time, right?” Said the woman, after calming herself a little.
“ Right!” Admitted Amon.
“ Then let me point something out to you.” The lady said, leaning to glare at the man. “ In all of the times you known her.... The many times she has hunted along side you, what she has been through.... has she broken down and cried ever, especially for no reason?”

The man paused, as the words hit him. He took a deep breath and looked right into the woman’s face. His eyes seemed to soften a little.
“ No!” He conceded. “ I have not ever seen her really cry at any time!”

Touko nodded, hearing the admission. She sat straight up in the seat, and did not waver as she looked at the man.
“ That is why I asked you what was going on between you and Robin!”

The man sat and did not say anything for a few moments, seemingly wrestling with something deep within himself. Touko was willing to wait for an answer from the man, how ever long it would take to pull it out of him. She just decided to be patient, as she knew that Robin was worth that.

While waiting on the tall hunter, something caught the woman’s eye. She noticed that there was something held in the man’s large palm. With lightning speed, she snatched the thing from his hand, her instincts telling her that this was a clue to whatever the man was fighting about in his heart.

Amon half heartedly tried to stop the girl from getting what ever he was holding on to, but seemed to stop short of being rough. He seemed to be resigned to it, and relented his urging to get it back.

The dark haired girl let out a gasp, as she found that the man was clutching three small pictures in his hand. They were all of the same person. The person in the photographs was Robin.
“ What are you doing with pictures of Robin?” She asked the man, her shocked mind wanting to know.

The man just took a long drag of a cigarette he had paused to light, since the other one had burnt out. He looked up and his eyes caught the lady’s. Something was aberrant in his.
“ During our hunt today, she saved my life when I was unable to defend myself.” He said, his gaze never flinching as he spoke. “ She fought for me against this Witch... and she announced that she loved me when the witch taunted her.”
“ And you brushed her statement off like it was a attack on you, right? You just shut down Robin like it was nothing?” She said, things now becoming clear. She looked down at the pictures that were in her hand now, then looked him right in the eyes. She gasped. “ I know now... you love her.”

The man nodded, not saying a word. He took the pictures from the woman, and slipped them back in to his coat pocket, his eyes not making contact with the young woman’s beside him.

Touko paused to digest this information for a moment. She knew something was going on, yet she never thought of this. She leaned closer to the man.
“ You love Robin.” She said, a small smile of understanding breaking over her face. “ I can see it on your face. That is a look I never saw in you during the time you and I dated.” She stopped. “ Was she the reason you broke up with me?”

The man looked right into the woman’s eyes. He seemed to be serious, yet there was sparkle of things finally coming out.
“ At that time, no...” He said. “ I broke up with you because I wanted too, it was not working between us, I knew that.” He sighed, rubbing his face as she continued. “ But, I was having some feelings for Robin at that time... maybe always since she joined.”
“ Do you really love her then?” The woman asked.
“ I have fallen deeply in love with her, Touko, more than I have with anyone before... but...” He said, his words trailing off.
“ But what?” Touko asked. “ You know I hate ‘buts’.”
“ Her age... she’s just becoming sixteen...”He said meekly, his demeanor changing as he talked about it. “ That is a problem...”

Touko shook her head and smiled.
“ Here in Japan, she is the age of consent now, you know?” The lady pointed out. “ She is a loving , caring soul, a feisty girl, I daresay. One that any man would love to date.” She looked at the man and snuffed. “ Is that the one thing you are worried about? How it looks to others?”
“ I know she is of age... but... I am much older than her.” He said, looking at his ex. “ How can I resolve that within me?”

The woman just stared at him, her eyes flashing with understanding.
“ Let me put this as clear as possible...” She said soothingly. “ To hell with your age!! You can be the Superhero Captain Morality all you damn well want, and be unhappy... or follow your heart and actually crack that mysterious and very stoic way of yours and let someone in for a change.” She paused to collect her next words. “ You know as well as I do that she is mature far beyond her tender age- that is what is attracting you to her. People will judge, but I believe people will come to also understand.”

The woman open the car door and stepped out. She looked back, and saw Amon was deep in thought. She leaned back in to the car for a moment.
“ I can’t tell you what to do, or how to do it...” Touko said, as she knew she had done what she felt like she needed to.. “ You will make that decision yourself... But just follow your heart on this one.”

She closed the door and walked away to her car that was parked about a hundred meters away, never glancing back once as she did so.

Amon just sat in silence, the lady’s word swirling around in his brain. He sat back and lit another smoke, as he retrieved the pictures from his coat pocket and sat there, staring at them once again.

He stared at the girl’s image, as his mind mulled over everything that it had taken in. Somewhere, was that single answer... for which he had no idea of yet. His heart raced at the sight of her image in his hand, this would be a decision that he needed to take time over.
