Battle Stage 28: Separate Journey's! A Curse of Fiends

 

Mai Kujyaku rose to sit in the bed of her lover Seto Kaiba as the sun filtered through the room. She sighed gently feeling his fingers caress her back, “Mmm, Seto, we can't stay in bed all day…” She groaned, Seto sat up putting his arms around her body kissing and sucking at her neck, “And why not?”

 

“Hmm, because you have a duel against the gym leader of the city, come on, up.” She explained breaking free of his grasp escaping from the bed to the door, Seto lent back as Mai covered her naked body with a robe, “I could watch this all day.” He said receiving a shirt in the face for his trouble, “Have a shower and get dressed Seto, I'll meet you downstairs for breakfast.” Mai responded pulling the shirt off his face to kiss him on the lips. Seto grabbed her by the shoulders and attempted to pull her down on top of him, but Mai broke away grinning, “Later honey.”

 

Kaiba sniggered watching Mai leave eventually rising putting a robe over his body, `It's unfortunate how the parting hurt Yuugi, but it worked out well for me.' He thought retiring to the shower to bathe.

 

“Ah, now there's my handsome man, sit down sweetie.” Mai said indicating to a chair as she daintily ate breakfast; Kaiba sat his large mauve jacket settling around him. “That jacket suits you hon, much better than white.” Mai commented earning herself a look from Kaiba before he began eating.

 

Midway through the meal Kaiba realized, “I have no idea where the gym is.” Mai laughed, “I do.” Kaiba narrowed his eyes, “How?” Mai responded with a grin, “I asked Hitomi.” Kaiba groaned, “What will this information cost me?”

 

Mai's eyes twinkled, “I'll let you know.”

 

Kaiba sighed, “So, where is this gym?” Mai pointed out to the bay with her fork, “An island about an hour's ferry trip from here, it's the island that is Rhodes, this is just a gateway to the island. According to Hitomi the next ferry doesn't leave for another forty minutes so we have plenty of time… to eat Seto!” Mai added seeing the look developing in Kaiba's eyes.

 

Forty minutes later a boat arrived and Hitomi announced the ferry to Rhodes was boarding. Collecting their tickets they boarded the ferry and after an hour they neared their destination.

 

The island itself extended for many kilometres, the Mediterranean like seaport curved around an inlet of lime stone cliffs. Entering the bay Seto and Mai witnessed the astonishing sight of houses built into the cliffs.

 

Kaiba smirked, “A city in the cliffs, hope you brought your hiking boots…” Mai glared, “Don't talk to me about stamin… LOOK OUT!” She screamed shoving Kaiba out of the way as an Ocean Dragon Lord - Neo Daedalus (Water/Sea Serpent/Effect/8 ATK/2900 DEF/1600) crashing through the railing onto the deck.

 

“Son of a bitch!” Kaiba growled gathering himself from his sprawled position on the deck, “Mai! Are you ok?” He yelled, “Ok, is not the word I would have used Seto!”

 

Once Kaiba regained his feet he saw what she meant, looming above Mai was Ocean Dragon Lord - Neo Daedalus, he sighed, “It's always the women… Blue Eyes White Dragon (Light/Dragon/8 ATK/3000 DEF/2500) attack Ocean Dragon Lord - Neo Daedalus!”

 

Blue-Eyes White Dragon reared as it exploded from its card ascending into the sky unleashing a blast wave upon the Ocean Dragon Lord. The area was engulfed in white light as Neo Daedalus withered under the Dragon's attack. Suddenly Neo Daedalus reared again throwing Blue-Eyes White Dragon's attack back at said monster blasting it from the sky, the force of the blast throwing Kaiba's card back into his hand.

 

“What! Blue-Eyes is stronger than that oversized crustacean!” Kaiba yelled incensed at his monsters failure to attain victory.

 

 

Mai growled, “Seto, its using the sea to get a field bonus (ATK/3100)…” She yelled, “Damn it, never rely on a man to do a woman's job!”

 

“1. I summon Harpy's Pet Dragon (Wind/Dragon/Effect/7 ATK/2000 DEF/2500) in attack mode;

 

2. I also summon Harpy Lady (Wind/Winged Beast/4 ATK/1300 DEF/1400);

 

3. And Harpy Lady's one and two (Wind/Winged Beast/Effect/4 ATK/1300 DEF/1400 x2);

 

4. Harpy's Pet Dragon's and Harpy Lady one's effects activate and combine to increase Harpy's Pet Dragon's attack twelve hundred points (ATK/3200);

 

5. Harpy's Pet Dragon attack!”

 

Harpy's Pet Dragon rose into the air launching a blazing fire ball at Neo Daedalus. Mai shielded her eyes as the fire ball impacted and exploded against the duel monster. The intense heat of the flames made Mai's skin sting as the monster was destroyed leaving a damaged and broken deck in its wake and Mai lying on her back breathing rapidly. Kaiba walked up smiling, “Funny, isn't this how I left you last night?”

 

“Seto, shut up and help me up or I'm sticking my heel into your leg.” She growled, Kaiba chuckled grabbing Mai's hand pulling the blonde to her feet.

 

The ferry limped into port with tears in its hull and the forward decking ripped and burnt. Disembarking, Mai and Kaiba climbed up into the city, the houses against the cliffs extended out into a city surrounded by trees and hills. The sweet scent of flowers rose from the streets intermixed with the hum of daily life.

 

Kaiba and Mai entered a tavern at the edge of the city. Sitting at a table Kaiba ordered drinks for the both of them, “If you're planning to get me drunk Seto, think again.” Mai said with a smile, Kaiba rolled his eyes, “I don't need to get you drunk to get you naked.” He responded, Mai kicked him under the table, Kaiba winced. Mai smiled sweetly, “Did that hurt darling?”

 

Kaiba nodded with a grunt, Mai continued to smile stroking his leg with her foot. Suddenly Kaiba gasped gripping the sides of the table as Mai dug her heel into his crotch while she continued to smile sweetly, “Honey, I care about you, I enjoy sleeping with you, but I am not a whore you can bed when you like, never forget who I am, and what I'm capable of.” Mai replied with a deliberateness Kaiba had never heard in Mai's voice before, he nodded and she released him, the relief palatable on his face.

 

A smash and flurry of movement took Mai and Kaiba out of their moment. “You cheating bastard!” A man at a nearby table yelled sending chess pieces scattering across the table and the floor, two men were standing eye to eye obviously ready for a fight.

 

However in a moment, everything stopped. Not just the action, everyone. To Seto and Mai it was as if someone had paused a DVD. Then slowly the scene began to rewind, the men picked up the chess pieces as if it was an automated motion placing them on the board. Picking the chairs off the floor the men sat down and everyone else was taken off pause. Mai glanced around, “Seto?”

 

“I know…” He agreed rising to his feet, he led them out of the tavern and into the street. Mai stopped in the middle glancing at Seto's back, “Seto, what the hell was that?”

 

Kaiba shook his head, “I don't know, but we're going t-opfh…” Kaiba said, but was interrupted by almost being knocked over by a passerby, rising to his feet Kaiba turned and was about to yell at the person, until, “Isis!”

 

The woman turned and stared at Kaiba blankly, “Yes, can I help you?”

 

Mai blinked, “Isis, it's us…”

 

“Us? I'm sorry I don't know you, either of you.” She responded walking away, until Kaiba's voice made her pause, “Your name is Isis Ishtar, correct?”

 

She turned towards him and nodded, “Yes, my name is Isis Ishtar.” Kaiba nodded, “Your brother is Malik Ishtar?”

 

Isis cocked her head, “You must be thinking of another, I don't have a brother…” Kaiba and Mai looked at each other confused as Isis wandered away. Kaiba growled going after Isis, ignoring Mai's protests. Seto got right up behind her, “Sorry about this Isis…” He whispered, before Isis could turn around Kaiba struck her on the back of the head, catching her and dragging Isis into an alley resting the said woman against a wall Mai following after a moment.

 

“Seto what are you doing?” Mai asked heatedly watching Kaiba pat Isis down.

 

“Something is wrong with these people, I want to find out what… the hell this is?” Kaiba said pulling Isis forward resting her head against his shoulder. Beneath her hair Isis had a device shaped like a shell headed bolt at the bridge between her skull and her spine.

 

Mai blinked, “What is it?”

 

Kaiba shook his head, “I'm not sure, without analysis anyway, however at a guess, I would say it is a control device hooked into the central nervous system to make the wearer believe, do and say what the control system wants them to believe. Very neat, very tidy little operation.” He said glancing at Mai who nodded, “Yes, for whoever is running it.” Her fingers moving around the device brushing against the cool skin of Isis's neck, “Can you remove it?”

 

Kaiba examined the device a little more then shook his head, “Not without knowing more, I could paralyse or even kill her.” Kaiba explained gently resting her against the wall again, Mai watched the concern in his eyes, “So… what now?”

 

Kaiba rose to his feet slowly, “We can't do anything for Isis right now, we'll go to the gym. To be honest I can't think of anywhere else to go apart from back to the port, which doesn't help anyone.”

 

Mai nodded, “You're right let's go.” She responded intertwining her fingers with his.

 

Leaving the alley Seto and Mai walked the streets towards the gym, a bunker shaped building built of concrete, painted white. Four towers protruded from the corners of the building, at the centre of the wall facing the city was a small steel plated entrance, the doors were already open, Kaiba looked at Mai with a raised eyebrow, “I believe we're invited.”

 

The two entered cautiously, the room inside was large and dark, Mai released his hand allowing Kaiba to step forward, “My name is Seto Kaiba from Domino, Takahashi Prefecture Japan, I am here to challenge for the badge of the Rhodes Island Gym!”

 

“And so you shall Seto Kaiba…” A voice replied emerging from the darkness. He was dressed in black leather and a black cape, his blood red eyes shone out contrasting his powder blue skin and bleach blonde hair. Kaiba scowled ignoring his fang toothed grin, “Vampire Lord (Dark/Zombie/Effect/5 ATK/2000 DEF/1500)… A duel monster in charge of a gym… ridiculous!”

 

“Alas, it's true…” He said revealing a silver duel disk on his arm, Kaiba nodded, “Tell me something first…”

 

Vampire Lord grinned, “You're wondering about my splendid utopia…”

 

“Your splendid utopia… this is your doing?”

 

Vampire Lord laughed, “Oh yes, a good measure of control so dearly needed for your kind, don't you agree?”

 

Kaiba growled, “No, let's duel!”

 

Vampire Lord Life Points: 8000

Seto Kaiba Life Points: 8000

“I shall draw;

 

1. I summon Getsu Fuhma (Dark/Warrior/Effect/4 ATK/1700 DEF/1200) in attack mode;

 

2. I play two cards face down.”

4. YZ-Tank Dragon (Light/Machine/Fusion/Effect/6 ATK/2100 DEF/2200) special summoned to the field in attack mode;

 

5. I also play Book of Moon (Quick Play/Spell) to flip Great Maju Garzett face down in defence mode;

 

6. Finally Fusion Weapon (Equip/Spell) to increase YZ-Dragon Tank's attack and defence fifteen hundred points (ATK/3600 DEF/3700);

 

7. I send a card from my hand to activate YZ-Dragon Tank's special ability to destroy your face down defence position monster;

 

8. YZ-Dragon Tank attack!”

 

YZ-Dragon Tank's attack inflicted 3600 points of direct damage to the opponent.

3. To summon Dark Master - Zorc (Dark/Fiend/Ritual/Effect/8 ATK/2700 DEF/1500) in attack mode;

 

4. I will activate Dark Master - Zorc's special ability and play dice roll!”

 

A single die appeared in Dark Master - Zorc's hand, it hurled the die into the centre of the field where it rolled to a stop. Vampire Lord smiled, 5. “Four, meaning one of your monsters is destroyed;

 

6. I play one card face down;

 

7. Dark Master - Zorc ATTACK!”

 

“You won't get away with this twice, reveal face down card Conscription Order (Trap), this card forces you to turn the top card of your deck over, if the card is a monster I can summon it to my side of the field in attack mode. Otherwise the card returns to your hand.”

 

“But the monster must be normal summonable, you're in luck…” Vampire Lord responded throwing Kaiba the top card on his deck. Kaiba threw it down, “Archfiend Soldier (Dark/Fiend/4 ATK/1900 DEF/1500) in attack mode.”

 

Dark Master - Zorc's attack destroyed Archfiend Soldier.

 

Seto Kaiba LP: 5300

Vampire Lord LP: 4400

 

::Seto::

 

“Hm, I draw;

 

1. My other face down card activates, Rival Appears! (Trap) this card allows me to summon a monster from my hand to the field with the same level stars as your Dark Master - Zorc;

 

2. Welcome, Blue-Eyes White Dragon (Light/Dragon/8 ATK/3000 DEF/2500) in attack mode;

 

3. Blue-Eyes White Dragon ATTACK!”

 

“Attack indeed, but what you may ask, I shall now activate Metal Reflect Slime (Trap) this card is a Trap Monster (Water/Aqua/10 ATK/0 DEF/3000) in defence mode and it intercepts your attack!”

 

Blue-Eyes White Dragon's attack failed.

“I shall draw;

 

1. Monster Reborn (Spell) revives Archfiend Soldier from my graveyard to the field;

 

2. I will sacrifice Archfiend Soldier to summon Legend Devil (Dark/Fiend/Effect/6 ATK/1500 DEF/1800) in attack mode;

 

3. And to stop your monster from attacking anything else Raregold Armour (Equip/Spell) equipped to Metal Reflect Slime, prevents you from declaring an attack on a monster other than Metal Reflect Slime;

 

4. I will also add Axe of Despair (Equip/Spell) to increase Legend Devil's attack one thousand points (ATK/2500);

 

5. Dark Master - Zorc activate your special ability in dice roll!”

 

Dark Master - Zorc threw the die to the middle of the field, rolling to a stop before Vampire Lord, causing Kaiba to smirk, “Six, meaning all of your monsters will be destroyed.”

 

“Ah, ha my dear Kaiba, that would be correct, however my face down card Dice Re-roll (Trap) negates that dice roll and re-rolls the die.”

 

6. “Ah, one, meaning all your monsters are destroyed;

 

7. Dark Master - Zorc, Legend Devil attack!”

 

”Not so fast, face down card, Dimension Wall (Trap) inflicts battle damage from Dark Master - Zorc back onto you!”

 

Legend Devil's attack inflicted 2500 points of direct damage to the opponent.

 

Seto Kaiba LP: 2800

Vampire Lord LP: 1700

 

::Seto::

 

“I…” He hesitated, something Seto Kaiba had never done before, for the first time since he'd picked up the cards he was afraid. Not so much for himself but if he lost what it might mean for his relationship with Mai. For the first time in his life he had someone to care for apart from Mokuba… it was making him weak.

 

“Well Seto Kaiba, what will you do now?” Vampire Lord asked smirking. Mai scowled, “Seto, focus!”

 

“Don't speak to me like that, I draw;

 

1. White Dragon Ritual (Ritual/Spell);

 

2. I send Luster Dragon (Wind/Dragon/4 ATK/1900 DEF/1200) to the graveyard;

 

3. To summon Paladin of White Dragon (Light/Dragon/Ritual/Effect/4 ATK/1900 DEF/1200) in attack mode;

 

4. I will add Ritual Weapon (Equip/Spell) to increase it's attack and defence fifteen hundred points (ATK/3400 DEF/2700);

 

5. One more thing to do, Paladin of White Dragon attack!”

 

“In another brilliant move to outwit you I activate my face down card, Spell Jammer (Counter/Trap) by discarding one card to the graveyard I can negate your Ritual Weapon and destroy it!”

 

Paladin of White Dragon's attack failed.

Kaiba dropped his head; he knew he'd been out played at every turn, worst of all by a duel monster. He'd lost before, not often, but it had happened, however what made this duel different, what made Seto ashamed, was the fact that he might fail in front of Mai. She… had awakened a part of his heart he had thought long dead. He didn't want to disappoint her, but at the same time, these feelings were scaring the hell out of him.

 

“Seto…” Mai said quietly, Kaiba turned to look at her and shook his head, “I'm sorry…”

 

Vampire Lord smirked, “What is wrong Seto Kaiba, do I hear a dragon's heart breaking?”

 

Mai scowled, “Shut up!”

 

Kaiba turned back to Vampire Lord, “Make your move!”

 

::VL::

 

“I shall draw;

 

1. During my standby phase Legend Devil's attack increases seven hundred points (ATK/3200);

 

2. Dark Master - Zorc, roll your die!”

 

For one last time a die appeared in Dark Master - Zorc's hand, it was thrown to the middle of the field landing before Vampire Lord, “Five, your Paladin of White Dragon is destroyed!”

 

3. “Legend Devil attack!”

 

Legend Devil's attack inflicted 3200 points of direct damage to the opponent.

 

Vampire Lord LP: 1700

Seto Kaiba LP: 0

 

“Damn it…” Kaiba swore staggering slightly, Mai supporting his weight, “I lost…”

 

Vampire Lord laughed, “Yes, but it has only begun for you.”

 

“What do you…?” Kaiba began Mai stepping away from him slightly.

 

The room darkened, the doors behind Kaiba slammed and locked, “What's happening!” He yelled the ground around his feet thickened and swirled with black mist.

 

Somewhere beside him Mai screamed, Kaiba turned to see her being forced to her knees by several figures cloaked by darkness. Before he could act he was restrained and on his knees, Vampire Lord glided over to Mai exposing the back of her neck, “You will be apart of my vision of a new world.” He said implanting a device in her neck, Kaiba could see her eyes glaze over and close before she fell in a heap on the floor.

 

Vampire Lord glided to Kaiba exposing the back of his neck, “Welcome Seto Kaiba…” He whispered Kaiba struggling against his restraints stubbornly, “Welcome home.”

 

Seto Kaiba felt a sharp pain in the back of his neck as his world slowly darkened. The last thing he heard before blacking out was the cold high laugh of Vampire Lord.
