It Begins

~*~Dream Sequence~*~

Black. Dark, Black, Cold. There he was, alone in the dark. His hands were wet, something staining them to the bone. His head felt full and heavy, too much in it. And then there were Hands. They were fisted, hard and covered in blood. The knuckles were bruised. Yugi could hear someone crying out, begging for it to stop. Yugi wanted to stop the hands, but he was frozen. He felt ice cold and boiling hot all at once. Yugi realized that he was in a room...*that* room. A small, fragile figure was curled in a corner, and those Hands were ravaging it; hitting it, hurting it, destroying it. And with every swing, he felt the pain. Tears burned down his cheeks. His head pounded. The figure was no longer on the floor. "Yugi, stop!" something wispered. Now Yugi was standing on a Card...something all too familiar. Voices came to him, quiet, but fast...
"Yugi, please..."
"Stop..."
"Please, Yugi..."
"Oh..."
"Yugi..."
"Never again..."
"Never stop..."
"Yugi's the baby..."
"innocece..."
It swirled around him, creating a mist. It choked him, shrouding him. Yugi felt trapped, pushing against it, pushing it away. And then it disappeared.

Silence.

"What have you done?"

Yugi's head sung. Then the pain stopped, and Yugi was staring into those eyes.
"Don't deny it."
Yugi couldn't speak.
"You can't stop this. It's who you are. Accept it."
Yugi found his voice. "No! I'm not..."
"Yes, you are. It's in you. Look..."
Yugi looked down and saw his hands. Those Hands. "NO!"

~*~End Dream~*~

"Yugi? Yugi, wake up..." Darcy was shaking Yugi, who lay next to him, thrashing in the sheets. He was shaking, a cold swest covering his body. He had been talking in his sleep again.
"no...NO!"
"Yugi! Please wake up!"
Yugi's eyes shot open, and he lept out of bed. He backed up against the wall, holding his head. Darcy watched in shock as he sunk to the floor.
"Yugi?"
When she didn't get a response, she cautiosuly crawled out of bed and knelt next to her love.
"Yugi? You ok? I'm here..."
His eyes snapped up to hers, deep lavender, shining with tears.
"D..Darcy? I...I couldn't stop...I wanted to, but I..."
Yugi collapsed into Darcy's arms. She held on to him, calming him and wondering what the hell was going on. She had to get it out of him.

--

The following morning, Yugi went back to Tim Hortans to pick up his last paycheque. Marnie was working the day shift for some reason.
"Hey Mo! S'up?"
A chorus of "Hey Mo!" followed from the drive-thru and the kitchen. Yugi smiled as he greeted his friends. He made his way into the back office telling the others of his job offers and interviews. Everyone was impressed by his impending success. He picked up his cheque and was on his way out when he heard the voice of an old friend...
"Small coffee. Black and make it snappy, I have places to be..."
"Kaiba?"
Yugi walked out to the front, where he saw the tall brunette. He was waiting, impatiently at that, for his coffee.
"Kaiba, is that you?"
The business tycoon turned in shock.
"Yugi? It's been a long time."
"It has."
Not knowing whether to hug or simply keep their distances, the two shook hands. Even after five years, Seto Kaiba was still not one of Yugi's closest frineds...
Kaiba got his drink, then the pair sat at a nearby table.
"What are you doing in Toronto, Kaiba?"
"A local company is looking into retailing my Duel Disk version 6. There have been major improvements in the game since you left..."
Both fell silent at that. Seto Kaiba had been well informed regarding the events prior to Yugi's sudden departure.
"That's great, about the game. I know it will be a hit."
"Hm."
"Kaiba? Er, Seto... Can I ask you something?"
Kaiba looked up from his coffee. Yugi had never called him Seto. They'd never been close friends. But, Kaiba got the feeling he knew what Yugi was going to ask.
"Go ahead."
"Um...how is everyone. At home. I mean, I haven't talked to them... I couldn't...after..." Yugi took a sudden intrest in his hands.
"They're fine. Joey is helping Mr. Mouto with the Turtle shop. Tristan and Bakura are in college. Tea moved away about a year ago...she got into a dance school in New York. I guess it was a dream of hers."
Yugi knew exactly where Kaiba meant, and it had been a dream of Tea's since he'd known her. He was happy for her, but something in what Kaiba had said sounded off...
"Wait...Joey's working with Grandpa? Where's Yami?"
"I don't know, Yugi. He vanished not long after you left."
Terror lit Yugi's face. "Vanished? What happened to the Puzzle, I left it with him..."
"No, Yugi, calm down," Kaiba put a hand on Yugi's arm. "He left. He picked up and moved away. He said that without you, he had no reason to stay in Domino. He writes to Mokuba, though,"
Yugi knew that Yami had felt close to Mokuba since the Duelist Kingdom turnament. It didn't suprise him that Yami would want Mokuba to know he was ok. Kaiba (almost) smiled as he continued: "We've gotten postcards from China, France, Australia, Italy...He stayed with Bakura's family in England for a while, he had gone to Egypt to explore his past, and the last we heard he was in California."
"Wow. So...he and Tea aren't together?" Yugi felt really bad about the whole thing.
"No. I don't know anything about what happened with them..."
Suddenly, a flurry or brown hair flung itself at Yugi...
"Yugi! It's really you! I thought it was!"
"Mokuba, I told you to wait in the car..."
"But Seto, security called. Someone's hacked into the computer at home..."
"What?" Kaiba stood.
"And that's not all, Seto, I got this!" Mokuba handed him a pager. Kaiba read the message aloud: "Doppleganger..."
"What does that mean?" Yugi was confused. That word was familliar...
"Pegasus." the tails of a trench coat flipped up in Yugi's face as Kaiba turned and strode out of the coffee shop.
"Big Brother, wait! What can you do? Our plane doesn't leave for an hour!"
Yugi and Mokuba dashed after Seto. He opened the door to their limo, and was half way inside when it struck him...
"You're right, Mokuba." Chocolate hair covered the shame in the executive's eyes. He knew very well that he couldn't stop Pegasus, not even now. Pegasus was strong against him before, but now... The years of anger against the group from Duelist Kingdom had eaten away at his mind. Pegasus would do anything, and this time, with out the ability to steal souls, he'd be out for blood. Kaiba looked into Mokuba's eyes. He couldn't play the hero alone this time, not with this kind of price...
"Yugi, I need you to come back with us."
Yugi turned cold. He felt as though the wind had been knocked from him. Go back? To Domino? How could he?
"Kaiba, I can't..."
Not one for mushy motivational pep talks, Kaiba grabbed Yugi by the collar. "Yugi, either you get in this car now, or you won't live to regret it. Mokuba, get in."
"Kaiba," Yugi was pulled into the car. "Kaiba, I..."
"You what? You'd prefer to see Pegasus take out your friends one by one? I know about your past, Yugi. Right now, I don't give a damn. Last time Pegasus and I battled, I lost. There's no gaurentee that I'll win this time. And Pegasus might destroy us all if you...*we* don't stop him."
"Kaiba, I think you're forgetting that I didn't win that duel. YAMI did. I haven't even picked up my deck in years."
"I realize that, but I can't contact Yami right now and...uh..." Kaiba looked him straight in those big violet eyes..."I'll never say this again, but you're my only chance. There's too much at stake here, you know that. We'll go by your place and you can pick up your things, and when this is over, you can do what you like, but I need you."
Yugi sighed. Kaiba was right, he had to go back, and face his fears, past and present.
"Ok, Kaiba. You're on."
--
Darcy arrived home at exactly 5pm, as always.
"Honey, I'm home!"
There was no answer.
"Yugi? You here?"
Again, nothing. Then she noticed that his coat was gone. And his shoes. And there was a note on the table:

My Darcy:
Seven years ago, I was given an ancient puzzle containing the spirit of a Phaero. He was my alter ego, my mentor and my best friend. We were champions at a game called Duel Monsters. I know it sounds crazy, but I left some Newspaper articles here to prove it. You'll notice that my eyes are different, and I'm taller. That was Yami. He was actually part of the reason I left Domino. I think it's I told you why:
Yami was the King of games, and he got all the glory for winning Duels and stuff. I was angry at him, and I didn't know how to vent. Well, he started to date Tea, my best friend and a girl I had liked since...forever. One night I got really mad at him, and I did something horrible. I hurt Tea badly. I was out of control, love. I was ashamed and scared so I left. I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner.
The photos and the articles on the table were from a tournament called Duelist Kingdom, where we were forced to play Duel Monsters against the creator of the game, Maxamillion Pegasus. He possessed an item simmilar to my puzzle which gave him the ability to read minds and steal the souls of my friends. When he lost, he lost his mind, amoung other things; it's all in the articles. He escaped custody, my love. An old friend came and has taken me back to Domino. I have to stop Pegasus before he kills someone, and I have to redeam myself to Tea, Bakura, Mai, Joey and Tristan, my friends.
I love you, Darcy. I'll be home when I can. I love you.
Yugi.

She was shocked. Darcy sat down, read each article three times, then cried. And then she picked up the phone.
"Yes, I'd like to purchace a ticket to Domino City, Japan, leaving tomorrow."
--

Yugi sat in Kaiba's private plane, now re-fuled and ready for take-off. He reached into the pocket and pulled out the picture he had with him. He and Darcy at the Molsen Ampatheatre, during a preformance by a group called "Nickleback". He remembered how much she loved them. How happy she was that day. He sighed. But, as he put the picture back in his pocket, his hand brushed against something else he had put in there that morning. The letter from Joey.

Dear Yugi.
Hey, man. I know you said not to write, but we all miss you alot. Listen, we all know what happened, and it's ok now, man. We just didn't know about you being angry, and we all forgive ya, Tea too. She's worried about you. But, man, you gotta come home, and there's another reason, too. It's Yami. He took off about two years ago, but he came back this morning. He's sick. Real sick. We need you, Yug. Please come back!
Still your best friend,
Joey Wheeler.

Fin.
