Yu-Gi-Oh! Fan Fiction ❯ Shadowy Links to the Past ❯ Fiery Magick ( Chapter 2 )

[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]

Sorry it took me so long to update. I have lots of stupid homework and stuff *grumbles* …plus these things take a while to write (yeah, I know, I'm just slow…).

Thanks for the review! I really appreciate it!

Disclaimer: Of course I don't own Yugioh or its characters (Do I really have to put this thing before every chapter??)

Well, enjoy the story!

Chapter 2: Fiery Magick

The next day Yugi and his friends were walking along the streets, just hanging out and talking. They were mostly talking about last night, and about the new girl, Dwenny.

"I'm telling ya Yuge," Joey was saying, "you should stay away from that girl. She means trouble. I can recognize her type a mile away. Comes from my experience of being the tough street kid." He grinned idiotically.

"Yeah, and didn't it seem awfully suspicious how she never answered who she was? She must be hiding something." Tristan said.

Yugi shook his head. He knew his friends were just trying to look out for him, and that this new girl did seem rather mysterious. But still, Yami feels so strongly about knowing her from somewhere, and he also feels that she can be trusted. Yugi still couldn't figure out why she looked so familiar to him as well. Sighing, he turned to Tea. "What do you think, Tea?"

Tea didn't like the girl at all. She still remembered how she had felt as she watched her and Yugi dancing together last night. She just wasn't sure if it was jealousy of the girl, or just concern for Yugi. Tea looked at Yugi, who was waiting for her answer. "Well, Yugi, I'm not so sure we should trust her just yet. I know that you and Yami both feel that she is trustful, but we really don't know anything about her, except for her name and that she claims to have magick." Tea thought for a second. "Which, come to think of it…remember how she had said that powerful magick senses other powerful magick?"

"Yeah," Yugi said. "That's how she was able to sense Yami."

"Well, then wouldn't that mean that she must have powerful magick of her own? In order to be able to sense Yami?"

Yugi thought for a moment. "I guess that makes sense."

Joey knew exactly where Tea was heading with this. "So if Dwenny has this powerful magick, then she could be really dangerous! See, what'd I tell you! She does mean trouble! And she may claim to use only "good" magick, but as far as I'm concerned, any magick is bad magick."

Yugi looked at his friends, his eyes troubled. "But the magick that allows Yami and me to merge isn't bad at all."

Joey hadn't thought of that. "Well, I guess there are some exceptions…" he mumbled, losing his argument.

Suddenly, Yugi and his friends found themselves surround by a dozen men in brown robes! They were each grabbed by three men and forced into a nearby empty warehouse. They tried to fight, but it was no use. They were too outnumbered. Once inside the warehouse, one of the men came up to Yugi and reached for his puzzle.

"No, stay away!" Yugi yelled, but 2 other men held him still. The robed man grabbed his Puzzle and muttered something Yugi couldn't understand. As soon as he finished, a strange reddish band appeared around the puzzle.

"There," the man said. "Now you are unable to use the powers of your puzzle!" He laughed cruelly.

Yugi's eyes widened in shock.

"What?" Joey yelled, still struggling against the men that held him. "That can't be possible!"

Inside Yugi's mind, Yugi looked at the door of Yami's soul room. It was glowing the same reddish color of the band around the puzzle. Yugi rushed to the door, trying to open it, but he couldn't! He pounded on the door, calling for Yami. On the other side, Yami was also pounding on the door, trying to get out. He didn't know how he was being locked in his own soul room. And he knew that Yugi needed his help as well, which made him even more angry. If whoever has done this harms Yugi, I'll make him pay dearly when I get out!

"What have you done?!" Yugi cried.

The robed leader chuckled. "I've cast a spell on your puzzle box, binding its powers so you can't use then!" He laughed again.

"Who are you? What do you want?"

"We were sent by the great Marik, and have come to duel you for your puzzle box!"

Yugi shook his head. "Marik again? No, I won't duel you. You're not getting my puzzle box!"

The leader laughed. "If you don't duel me, then your friends will suffer as a result!"

The other men tightened their grips on Yugi's friends, making them cry out a little. "Yugi," Joey said, gritting his teeth, "don't do it!"

Yugi wasn't sure what to do. If he did duel, then he wouldn't have Yami's help and could lose the puzzle and him forever. But if he didn't, then his friends could be seriously hurt.

Suddenly, the door of the old warehouse burst open. Everyone turned to see what the cause was. Yugi's eyes widened. It was Dwenny! But what was she doing here? It didn't really matter. She could get seriously hurt as well.

Dwenny walked into the warehouse, her Doberman close behind her. She looked at the men holding Yugi and his friends, then at the leader. She stopped several feet away from him and Yugi, narrowing her eyes at the man. "Didn't your mother ever teach you that it's not nice to bully people around?" Her Doberman let out a low growl as well.

"Dwenny!" Yugi yelled. "Get out of here! It's too dangerous!"

The leader smiled. "Yeah little girl. You and your little dog are outnumbered, and could get hurt. So why don't you run along and play?" he sneered. "You're out of your league here!"

"No," Dwenny replied, "you're out of your league!" she held up a hand, as if she was holding something. Summoning her magick, a small greenish fireball appeared in her hand, and grew until it was the size of a baseball. Dwenny withdrew her hand with the green fireball to her side, then flung out her arm toward the men holding Yugi. The fireball flew, splitting into two and hit both men, knocking them to their feet! Everyone gasped in surprise. The leader turned his face towards Dwenny, his mouth open and his eyes wide.

"There's plenty more where that came from," Dwenny said, raising her hand and summoning another green fireball. "So why don't you and those other goons release Yugi and his friends before I get real angry." She narrowed her eyes. "And trust me, you don't want to see me angry!"

The leader let out a low growl. This girl dared to interfere with the great Marik's plans? But he didn't have the power to stop her. Marik will be very disappointed in him. Very disappointed indeed. Sighing, he signaled for his men to release Yugi's friends. The two men who had been holding Yugi were also getting up groggily from the floor. The leader glared at the girl. She's gonna pay for this, I swear it! Without saying a word, he and his mean left the warehouse.

Once the robed men had left, Dwenny lowered her arm, the fireball disappearing. She looked at Yugi. "You guys ok?" she asked.

Yugi nodded. "We're fine, thanks to you. But Yami is…" Yugi couldn't continue, instead lifting up the puzzle so Dwenny could see for herself.

Dwenny looked at the reddish band around the puzzle, feeling dark magick emanating from it. She shook her head. "Those men put some sort of dark spell of entrapment around the puzzle, to keep you and Yami from contacting each other."

Yugi nodded. "Can you help him?" he asked, his voice pleading. He couldn't bear having Yami trapped in his soul room like that.

Dwenny sighed. "I hope I can. I'm not sure how powerful this magick is." She knelt down on one knee, and reached up, holding her hands around the puzzle, but not actually touching it. She closed her eyes, focusing on the spell's energy source. She found it to be quite strong. It would be difficult to break, but by no means impossible. She continued probing the spell, looking for weaknesses. Suddenly she stopped, opening her eyes and looking at the puzzle curiously. She could have sworn she felt Yami calling out. Dwenny shook her head to clear it, then closed her eyes and focused once more, this time on Yami's essence.

Yugi and his friends stared as Dwenny stayed knelt in front of Yugi, her eyes closed, hand hovering around the puzzle. There were all still a bit stunned from their ambush, as well as from Dwenny's fireball. Joey was about to say something, but Yugi shook his head. He didn't want to disturb Dwenny's concentration. He desperately hoped that she would be able to help Yami.

Finally, after several minutes, Dwenny opened her eyes again. She looked up at Yugi. "The spell is strong, but I think I can break it with a counter spell."

Yugi nodded. He hoped she would be again to break it. He was about to ask her what she was going to do, when Joey opened his mouth again.

"Hold on a minute! How do we know this isn't all part of some big plan of hers? For all we know, she could have sent those robed dudes after us, so she could come in and "rescue" us."

"Yeah," Tristan chimed in, "she could be trying to put some spell on Yami or something."

Dwenny sighed and shook her head slowly. She wondered if it was a mistake coming here. She hated being around people who didn't want her there. Maybe she should have just minded her own business and kept on driving past the warehouse. But she sensed danger, great danger for Yugi and his friends. She also sensed evil as well. So she couldn't just keep driving. Even if they were a bit ungrateful. Ugh…stupid conscience.

"You guys, she's not after the Millennium puzzle, and she didn't send those robed men after us!" Yugi cried. "Remember? The leader said they were sent by Marik."

"Well, I still don't think we should let her do any of her magick mumbo-jumbo on your puzzle, Yuge," Joey said. "How do we know she's not just taking advantage of a situation here?"

Dwenny had had enough. She stood up. "Look, if you don't want my help, then fine. I'll be more than happy to leave, rather than waste any more of my time." She turned to her dog. "Let's go, boy." They both started walking towards the door.

"Yeah, that's right. Keep on walking," Joey said. "And don't let the door hit you on the way out!"

"No, wait!" Yugi cried, running towards Dwenny. "Please don't leave. I trust you, and so does Yami. We need your help!" Tears started forming in Yugi's eyes. He turned to his friends. "Please, you guys. Let her try to help Yami. She may be his only hope! I…we don't know anyone else who knows magick."

"Yugi's right," Tea said quietly. "I don't like it either, but we really have no other choice. She's the only person we know who knows magick. Even if it may be bad magick." She looked at Dwenny.

Dwenny rolled her eyes. "I already told you, I only practice white magick. You know, good magick? But whatever. Obviously, you're not going to believe anything I say. So do you want my help or not?"

Yugi looked pleadingly at his friends. After a moment's thought, Tea, Joey and Tristan looked at each other, then finally nodded their heads. Yugi smiled with relief.

"Good. I'll get started right away then," Dwenny said.

However, before she could say another word, the door burst open and the robed men rushed in. Everyone quickly backed to the center of the room. Dwenny moved so that she was standing in front of everyone. Her Doberman let out a low growl as the robed men approached.

"You think I'm gonna let some witch disgrace me like that?" the leader sneered. "Well, think again! I'm back, and ready with my own magick." He closed his eyes, and he and his men staring chanting in some strange language.

Dwenny felt evil magick start to build and grow stronger. She knew what was coming, and there wasn't much time left. Summoning her own magick, she quickly began chanting a spell of her own: "Craft the spell in fire, craft it well, weave it higher. Weave it now of shining flame, none shall pass to hurt or maim. None shall pass this fiery wall, none shall pass, no none at all!"

As soon as she finished, green flames began to spiral upward from the ground, encircling around Dwenny, Yugi, and the others. It continued spiraling upward until it had reached the ceiling of the warehouse, forming a fiery wall of protection around everyone. No sooner had it finished forming, when Dwenny felt the dark attack. It slammed full force into the firewall, causing everyone within it to almost lose their balance. Dwenny's Doberman whimpered a little, jumping up on his hind legs and placing his paws on Dwenny's leg. Dwenny looked down and picked him up. "It's ok Bestian. Seems the protection spell is working." She looked through the flames at the robed men, who were once again gathering their magick for another attack. "For now…"

Yugi and his friends looked with amazement at the green fire surrounding and protecting them. "Whoa…" was all Joey and Tristan could utter. Tea curiously reached out a hand towards the green flames, her eyes mesmerized by the dancing flames.

Dwenny, sensing danger, turned around, Bestian still in her arms. "Umm, I wouldn't do that if I were you, Tea. The flames may have been conjured by magick, by they are quite real."

"Oh…" Tea slowly pulled her hand back. "I've just never seen green flames before."

Well, Dwenny thought, at least she's no longer calling me "evil". Now onto bigger problems. Like what to do about those robed men.

"What do we do now?" Yugi asked. He thought for a few seconds. "I bet Yami would know what to do. Maybe we should free him now?" he asked hopefully.

Dwenny could see his anxiousness in wanting to free his friend. She shook her head sadly. "I'm sorry Yugi, but I don't think that I will be able to right now."

Yugi looked down sadly.

Dwenny tried to explain. "You see, to free Yami and break that spell, it's going to take much concentration. And right now, I have to concentrate on keeping this firewall up. Once we are safe from these men, I promise I'll free Yami."

Yugi sighed. Hang in there Yami! "Well, what do we do now?" he asked again.

"Hmm…" Dwenny thought for a moment, looking out towards the men. "They're taking more time to summon their magick, to strengthen their attack in hopes of having it strong enough to break through the firewall." She scratched behind Bestian's ears, which helped her to think. "Perhaps I could use the firewall to reflect their attack on them. That way, they'd end up knocking themselves unconscious, giving us time to get out of here."

Joey groaned. "I'm really staring to hate magick here. All this talk about spells and dark magick is way creepy."

Dwenny sighed. I wish they would see that not all magick is dark. Perhaps in time they will learn to trust. Dwenny put Bestian back down on the ground. Then she closed her eyes and summoned her magick once more. Focusing on the flames around her, she began her spell: " By the powers of three times three, send them back what they gave to me, three times three!" She kept chanting this over and over in a low voice, each time increasing the strength of the flames. She was till chanting when she felt the dark attack once more hit the fire wall. She stopped chanting and opened her eyes just in time to see it reflected back upon the men. With a cry of surprise, they jumped out of the way, letting their magick slam in to the wall behind them, completely crushing it.

Grumbling, the leader got up shakily. He hated to admit, but this witch was strong. Very strong. But then he thought of something new. Perhaps Master Marik will be able to gain this power for himself! He grinned wickedly, calling out to the girl. "You may have won this battle, witch, but I promise, I will be back! And next time, you won't be so lucky!" He and his men left the warehouse once more.

"It wasn't luck," Dwenny muttered. She cast out her senses, making sure that the men were truly gone. Satisfied that they had left, she reached her hands out toward the flames, palms face down, and said: "Circle open, but unbroken. Power down, to the ground." The green flames slowly disappeared, the spell broken. Dwenny sighed in relief.

"So is it over now?" Yugi asked.

"For now, yes. I don't think they will be coming back anytime soon." She paused for a few seconds. "Is there somewhere safe we can go that's around here?"

Yugi thought for a moment. "Sure, we can go to my place. It's not too far."

"Great, let's go then. My car's parked out front, so I'll drive." Dwenny looked at Tea, Tristan, and Joey. "Unless you don't trust me and would rather walk."

"No," Tristan said, "we'll go with you. But only to make sure nothing happens to Yugi," he added.

Dwenny rolled her eyes as they all walked out of the warehouse.

Well, there's the end of chapter 2! Hope you all liked it. In the next chapter, Dwenny tries to free Yami and break that spell. Will it work? Oh, and maybe some of Dwenny's past will be revealed too. Not sure about that yet. Thanks for reading and please review! :)
