Ch.39: Confessions and Rain
When evening settled when Yugi came out into the balcony, staring at the night sky.
`It's almost been about a month and a half since we came here.' He thought as he gaze fell to the river, which was low, too low for the crocodiles to hang around in. `I hope that's a temporary problem.' He worriedly thought. The sound of a door opening brought his attention from the scene and towards the room. “Hey Atemu.” He said as the other walked out with him.
“Evening Yugi.” Atemu said as he leaned against the stone railing.
They stared out in the nightly scene for a moment before the young ruler spoke.
“It's almost have been two months since you've been here.”
Yugi nodded. “A lot of things happened in such a short time.”
Atemu nodded. “Yes it has.”
Another pausing silence.
“What was the story?”
Yugi looked confused.
“Before you read the scroll to come here, Joey mentioned a story both of you heard that lead you to the scroll.” Atemu explained as he looked at the youth. “And I would like to know how it went.”
Yugi took a moment to think and took a deep breath as he explained the story to the very end. “… And then the young pharaoh did the unexpected. He tried and succeeded suicide and left the people shocked and confused. His cousin took the throne, but was assassinated a week while he ruled. The new pharaoh was when the kingdom started to fall apart.” He looked at the other, who was silent and staring at the sky. “Atemu?”
“In the story, Ahmose created a spell but knew he couldn't do it. He placed it in my tomb, knowing one day someone would retrieve it and handed it to you.”
Yugi nodded slightly. “I guess that's how it was suppose to go.”
Atemu nodded while still looking at the sky before looking at the stone rail. “I'll have to thank Ahmose then.” He said.
Yugi understood and nodded. “He'll probably confused, but I think he'll get the message.” He said as he looked at the other, who was staring at the village. “Atemu? Is there something wrong?”
No response.
“Atemu?” He placed a hand over the other's, which seem to do the trick.
Atemu looked over and gave a small smile before looking at the sky. “I was just thinking.”
“About?” Yugi knew the other was keeping something.
Atemu held the other's hand. “About you.” He turned his full attention on the youth. “The reason I asked about the story was because…” He looked into amethyst orbs. “Not long ago, I was on this railing, ready to end it all; the pain, the shame, the loneness…”
Yugi was a bit surprised, but continued to listen.
“But a part of me was hesitant and I prayed to the gods to use some force to stop me; a reason for me to stay alive.” He smiled softly. “Then you came. Just out of the night you fell on top of me and at first I was afraid, but I saw your face and thought you were the gift from the gods.”
Yugi blushed and looked at the floor. “Than you found out who we really are.” He said.
Atemu broke out into a grin. “Well, the outfit you were wearing was a dead giveaway.” He said, which caused the other to mock glare at him. “But even then, I saw you as a gift from above.”
Yugi returned to blushing.
“But I never saw myself worthy to have you around, because of my secret. But you accepted me, even my faults and lies.”
Yugi smiled and was about to say something when the other continued.
“But even then, I still saw myself unworthy, but I was drawn to you that I didn't want to push you away; I wanted you around.”
A small gust of wind came up.
“You saw, in my soul, how it almost disappeared.”
Yugi nodded.
“How I tried to keep telling you to get away. But you stayed, even when you were also paying the price. When you said that you weren't going to leave me and you were going to stay with me to the very end, I didn't want you to suffer as I did, but I knew that I was the only one that decides that could get us both out of that place. And your belief in me did that.” He smiled at the youth. “You helped me repair my spirit before it turned into nothing.”
Yugi looked at the other. “I knew you needed help and I didn't want to see you in so much pain.” He said.
“That's what makes you so special.”
Yugi blinked.
“You have an inner strength that gives you courage to do what is right.”
Yugi was really lost on that point. “How so?”
Atemu looked at him strange and laughed. “Are you serious? You have no idea the times that happened?”
“Must have missed it somewhere.” Yugi said as the other calmed down and held up three fingers.
“One was when you entered Ra-iten's room and faced him.” One finger down. “The second was when you entered my soul and stayed with me, even when you know the dangers of it.” Second finger down. “And the last one was back at the canyons, when you appeared from the dust with a bow and many arrows and you helped win that battle by making the odds even, though you also know that you had to keep your guard up so you wouldn't get killed out there.” All three fingers where down. “See it now?”
Yugi looked surprised. “I never thought of it that way.”
Atemu smiled. “I'm glad that I could remind you.”
Yugi scratched his head. “I guess I've changed a lot since I met you.”
“How so?”
“Well, like you said, I've been risking for what's right and I learned a lot about your language, writing, and your customs.”
Atemu laughed. “That's true.”
They both laughed before settling down and looked up at the night sky, where a shooting star zoomed by.
Atemu looked over at the youth. “Yugi?”
“Hm?”
“Aren't you going to make a wish?”
Yugi shook his head. “Not tonight.”
“How come?”
Yugi shrugged. “I don't know what to wish for.”
Another zoomed by and Atemu closed his eyes and made his wish.
Yugi, unknown to the young ruler, stared at the other. `I wish I could tell you that I love you.' He thought as the other opened his eyes.
“Yugi.”
“Huh?”
“Is there something you wish to tell me?”
Yugi froze on that question. `How did he know that I wanted to tell him?!' He thought as he responded. “N-No, what makes you say that?”
Atemu looked at the other closely. “Because you're a worst liar, worst than me.”
`Oh no!' Yugi thought as he looked out over the horizon. “How did you know?” He asked. `This may not be a bad thing.'
“Your eyes.” Atemu said. “They're holding something behind that you're not telling me.
Yugi looked down. “I wanted to tell you, but I was afraid…” He started as he sensed the other boring him down with those crimson eyes.
“Afraid of what?” Atemu asked calmly as he moved a bit closer.
“A-Afraid of what y-you would react or think.” Yugi said now looking at the ground.
Atemu was both shocked and confused to hear this from the other. “Yugi…” He wrapped his arm around the small teen. “Now why would you think that?”
Yugi tried to respond, but the lump in his throat was big and could only let out a small sound escape his lips.
Atemu recognize this emotion and held the other in a comforting embrace.
“A-Aishiteru.” Yugi whispered loud enough for the other to hear.
Atemu heard him say something, but knew it was the foreign language that the other used. “Aishiteru? What does that mean?” He asked.
`Here's the moment of truth.' Yugi thought as he looked up at the other and quickly, but gently placed his lips on the others.
Atemu was really surprised by this, but didn't move away or push the teen. Instead he closed he eyes and let the other stay while feeling the soft lips on his.
Yugi than had to break away to look at the other's face for any sign of dislike, but saw a surprise yet happy sign. “It means `I love you'.”
Atemu went wide-eyed when the other said the meaning of the word and held the teen tighter.
It was Yugi's turn to look surprised but saw this as accepting.
“I love you as well, Yugi.” Atemu whispered.
Yugi smiled and looked up at the other before kissing him again, which the other gladly returned.
~-Next Day: Throne Room-~
Everyone was in the throne room as Atemu spoke.
“To those who have fought shall never forget the ones that have passed on in this world, and those who will live on shall remember their fallen companions as time goes on until their time has come and join those who are waiting for them along with their deceased families and ancestors.” He spoke while looking at everyone in the eye. He than went on by recognizing each lord with their men. “And now, I would like to recognize my cousin and High Priest of my court, Seto, for defending not only me but also for those who are in a disadvantage.”
Seto, already knowing from reading it, just nodded.
“I would also like to recognize two very special people here today…”
The door opened and two figures walked out and down towards the throne. The two figures were none other than Joey and Yugi, with specially made garments for this event.
Joey's outfit was almost like Seto's, except it didn't come with a hat and it was gold and white with a hint of rustic color for the trim. He was also wearing a gold collar that had rare gems on it and at the center it had an ankh.
Yugi's outfit was similar to Atemu's, except the jewelry were silver, the cape was red to match the young king's eyes, and was wearing the late Queen's head ornament.
They bowed respectfully as the young ruler continued.
“Joey, please rise.”
The mentioned blonde did.
“You have been put in charge of training the men by Mateo as well as warning my people about the intrusion of the enemy and calmly place them in my palace until it was safe.” He nodded to Mateo, who came up with something that was bundled up in cloth. “For that, you have been given the right to train any one of the armies men including my own, that seek out that trait that all of us noticed in battle that only you can teach.”
Mateo unwrapped the cloth to show a gold dagger-like sword.
Joey went completely wide eyed at the sword, but kept it together as he took the gift from Mateo before walking over to the right, where Seto was standing, and waited.
Atemu looked at the youth before him. “Yugi, please rise.”
The mentioned teen did so.
“Yugi, as I told you before, you have saved me from myself more than you can imagine. You have the courage that is not measured physically, but from someone as kind as yourself, its unimaginable for those who have not known you as some. You risked your very life and soul to do what you think is right.” He nodded to Ahmose, who came up with a box and opened it to reveal a necklace that was shaped like a scarab and has the Pharaoh's symbol.
Yugi looked curious, but was more interested in what the other said next.
“For that, you have earned not only my trust, but also the trust of everyone in this palace and within my kingdom. You're also earned my companionship, as well as a valued member of my court.” He took the necklace from the box and started to place it on the youth before straightening again.
Yugi went to the left side of the other, who smiled and got a smile in return.
“I would again say my thanks and-“
“PHARAOH!!” A guard came in, all soaked.
“What's the matter with you!?” One of the other guards said.
“Calm down.” Seto said as the soaked guard came up.
“What is the matter?” Atemu said than added. “And what in Ra's name happened?”
“My Pharaoh, the most wonderful occurrence just happened.”
“Well don't just stand dere n' blabbin' all day!” Joey said. “What da hell is goin' on?”
“The rains have finally come!”
Everyone was dead silent.
“Say wha?” Mana said over the silence, which seems to echo.
Mahado went out and soon enough it was raining.
Everyone followed soon after.
“All right!” Joey said as he jumped out and was instantly soaked. “So ya finally cut us a break, eh!?” He called to the sky.
Seto sighed. “They can't he-“ A stream of lighting nearly hit him.
“Don't anger the gods cousin.” Atemu said with a smirk. “You of all people should know that.”
Seto sighed. “I stand corrected.” He said as the blonde dragged him into the rain.
Some laughed at the site as Seto was completely soaked and Joey was complaining how the other wouldn't lighten up, than lead to another argument.
Atemu sneaked his hand to grab the other's hand and dragged him out into the rain.
“This feels so good!” Yugi said as the rain made contact with his body.
“The best occurrence since you arrived.” Atemu said making the other blush. He leaned down and kissed the other's temple before spinning them both around.
Soon everyone joined in the cooling rain, enjoying the feel on them before returning back inside to say their farewells and went their separate ways.
~*Inside*~
“They're alright when they are around…” Seto said as he sat down on one of the chairs by the throne. “But I'm so glad they're gone.”
“Not da mention dat da Nile t'ing is solved.” Joey said.
“Thanks gods.”
“N' goddesses.”
“Right.”
~-Meanwhile-~
Atemu and Yugi were saying goodbyes to the remaining three.
“I'm going to miss all of you!” Mana cried as she hugged Yugi.
“We're going to miss you too.” Yugi said, having some trouble breathing. `She has Mateo's death hug… need… air!' He thought as she released him and was faced with Mahado.
“Farewell, Yugi.” He said.
“You finally said my name in an informal way.”
Mahado laughed. “It seems so.”
“See you around Mahado.” Yugi said as he watched the two.
“Boy what till Chira sees you! She'll be so happy!” Mana said as Mahado blushed at the thought of his girlfriend, who is also Mana's older sister.
Yugi looked over to Mateo, who was talking to Atemu.
“Aw! Do you really want to get rid of us that badly?” Mateo said with mock hurt.
Atemu grinned. “No, but everyone where you live should be worried to death by now, not to mention your wife.”
Mateo cringed at the thought. “You're right.” He shivered. “She's beautiful, but damn she's tough.”
“That's what you asked for in a woman, right?”
“Yes, and to this day I love her pieces.” Mateo smiled. “Well then, I better be off now before she puts matters into her own hands.” He waved and entered the boat.
Atemu and Yugi waved until they could barely se the boat in the pouring rain.
