***********~enter Larien's bedroom, hour after last chapter(nighttime) ~*************
Larien was restless. It wasn't that she wasn't tired, it was that she felt bored and angry for no reason at all, and she was sick of it being dark. She wasn't getting any real sleep at all, just dozing a little, and opening her eyes now and then.
Finally, she just sat up. Her head was hurting badly, and so were her shoulders.
"About time you woke up."
She looked up to see the little black cat sitting in the corner. He began to get bigger, and the fur shrank away from his face and paws as he changed into his elfin body.
"Ninoriel, it's late. Why are you awake?"
"Why are you?" he countered.
She stared at him for a moment. "I don't know, actually."
"I do. Come on." He turned and walked out the door. "I've got something to show you."
She sighed and got up to follow him.
***********~Exit Larien's bedroom, enter dungeon ~*************
Ninoriel walked quickly down the hall. That demon Lia had caught was very, very angry by now. When Larien found out what Lia had done, a thunderstorm was sure to start. And when she found out what that nutcase Natasha had done, she would be even more pissed off. Maybe he should have thought of that before he'd told her to come with him.
***********~10 minutes later~*************
"Ninoriel, I'm tired. Where are we going?"
She saw her brother wince before answering. "Down to the dungeon."
"Why?"
"Because. Just come on."
"Ninoriel. What is going on?"
"Lia did something you really won't like. That's all I'll say. Now let's go."
***********~In dungeon~*************
At one point sometime after nightfall, the crazed girl had introduced herself to Hiei as Natasha, a very powerful werewolf he `should not mess with unless he felt like getting stalked for the rest of his life,' and had taken him off the stupid table thing and chained him to a wall, which really wasn't that much better if you thought about it…(but why would you?!)
(Lia: Bwahahahahaha!)
He had fallen asleep, exhausted from exerting his now useless powers on the chains, and was now awakened by a loud bang. A door closing. Natasha? But no. A boy's voice, and a girl's too, but it wasn't that insane witch.
They were arguing about something.
"What the hell do you mean she `kidnapped him?'" the girl asked.
"That's what I mean. He came here, she knocked him over the head and left him down here."
"And you left him too, I presume?"
"Well, he asked me to let him go. Sort of…"
"Well? You left him? I didn't see him anywhere else."
"Yes, I left him. Is that what you wanted me to-?"
"YOU IDIOT! GO BACK TO YOUR ROOM!" (A/N: Yeah, she would really say that. Sure.)
"Hey, I told you where he was, didn't I?"
"Yes, after nightfall. Did that do him any good?"
"I just talked to him-"
"Out."
The door closed again a moment later, and light footsteps echoed on the stairs.
"Hello?" the girl called. "Are you all right?"
Hiei hadn't realized they were talking about him, since the only `person' he had just talked to had been a cat. But then he realized what he had only subconsciously noticed about that cat. It was a hanyou. This girl was too, it smelled like. Half cat demon, half…something. Not ningen. This smelled the almost the same, but entirely different. Strange.
"Are you hurt?"
She shouldn't need to ask if he was hurt. She would be able to smell blood. Or fear, but she definitely wasn't getting any of that from him, no matter how long he had to stay down here.
There was a soft jingle of keys, then eyes flashed outside the cell.
"Oh, good. You're not. I was worried when you didn't answer."
The door creaked open, then dim light flooded the room. He blinked, blinded for a moment.
When his eyes had adjusted again, a young girl was crouched down in front of him, gazing at him with light grey eyes. Ageless eyes that told him she was much older than she looked.
She looked like an ice demon. That hurt a bit, remembering, and he glanced down at the crystal tear he wore around his neck, seeing it even though it was hidden by black.
Larien saw the way he looked at her, even if it had only been for a second. She glanced down as well, wincing slightly as she realized what he had compared her to. "Sorry."
When no response came, she gently took his wrists, unlocking the shackles. He glared at her the whole time, even though she wasn't the one who had put him down here. He had a right to be angry, she supposed.
"You're free to leave, if you wish to go, but I hope you'll stay until I can talk to Lia and see what's gotten into her. She doesn't normally act like this."
`Hn,' was all she got. Not yes or no. But when he got up and crossed his arms, staring at her, she assumed that was a form of agreeing.
"This way." She could see quite well in the dark, and perfectly down here, so she led him around the easiest path and on up the stairs. Ninoriel was waiting for them.
"See? He's no worse for wear."
"He's bleeding, you idiot."
"Baka neko," Hiei snapped. "You left me down there."
Ninoriel glared at the smaller boy. Larien just grinned.
"I'm sorry for what's happened to you so far. This is Ninoriel, and I'm Larien. I assume you're staying for a while, at least until Lia explains herself, so you can make yourself comfortable here until she comes back. She left earlier, and she probably won't be back `til tomorrow."
"Hn."
"There are some rooms at the end of the second hall on your left. You can clean up and rest for awhile before you leave."
"Hn."
"I have the first door on the right down here. No one else is here yet, so if you need anything, just tell me. I live at the end of this hall. And Nin is in…well, usually my room, but wherever he wants to be."
"Hn."
"Just be careful. It's a bit dangerous around here now."
No response. He turned and walked down the hall, quickly blending in with the black.
"He doesn't talk much, does he? And `leave?' I'm surprised you even brought that up," Ninoriel said when he was out of earshot.
"Well what am I supposed to say? `Stay or you go back in the dungeon?'"
"Something along the lines of that." Ninoriel replied, laughing softly. But when he saw the look on his sister's face, he stopped. "Larien, I'm sorry."
"It's okay. Let's just go back to bed. I'm tired."
***********~Larien's room~*************
Larien lay in the darkness, thinking. Ninoriel had apologized once more before returning to his cat form and curling up beside her. Her mind kept flashing over the various books she'd read on the supposed `Forbidden Child.' A mixture of fire and ice. A combination that couldn't exist in nature. But he did, and only a short walk away.
But there was another `forbidden' child. Or rather, two more. Mixtures of demon and elf that shouldn't exist because demons were thought evil by elves, and vice versa, at least in her world. But it had happened, and one of those children was punished because he looked like what he was.
She gazed over at her brother, touching his whiskers and smiling when his cheeks twitched and he gave her a half-still-asleep-but thoroughly annoyed look. Then she kissed his head and settled down for the night, closing her eyes.
But her mind kept wandering back to her little brother. She was sorry for yelling at him now.
He hadn't meant to hurt anything. He was trying to let her win the demon over. Her sweet and silly little brother.
Her forbidden brother.
Larien fell asleep with memories of the past for dreams.
