A/N: Larien's demon form has purple eyes. Larien herself is presently around 225-230ish years old. Immortality rocks, doesn't it?

***********~flashback~*************

It had been the night before Ninoriel's birthday, and he had still been as playful as ever, even turning twelve. Despite the way the other `pureblooded' elves treated him, he had still kept his childhood alive with her. They had been each other's best friends, him because the other children either hated him or were scared of him, and her because she would have no one who would treat him so cruelly.

And it was that night that their whole lives had changed.

Ninoriel had pleaded with her to go down and listen to their grandparents, to find out what they had planned for him. He said that she most likely wouldn't get in trouble if she was caught, which probably wouldn't happen. She was too quiet. He hated surprises usually, and she knew he would be up all night if she didn't oblige. So she had gone.

"He can't live here anymore. Haven't you heard what the others think of him? Of us for keeping him?"

Larien had stopped dead in her tracks.

"But what will we tell his sister? She's got half of her father's blood in her veins, and that will do her as much good as it did him."

Anger began to rise in her throat. Their parents had died fighting Sauron and his evil, and these elves dared to insult them?

"At least she looks like she is a full elf, and not some half cat freak."

At that, tears ran down her cheeks. Their own family hated him too?

"Then it's settled. He'll leave in the morning, and he'll be killed on sight if he's ever seen again. That is agreeable to you?"

"It is."

She went back to her room, gulping down soft sobs. Ninoriel looked at her, his eyes wide with concern and worry as he got off his bed. "Larien? What's wrong?"

"I'm all right, Nin," she said, trying to fight back the tears. "Don't worry. I…I hurt myself going down the stairs."

She had felt so guilty telling him that. But what could she have told him?

"It'll be better in the morning. Just relax, all right? Larien?"

She glanced at those green cat eyes he saved just for her. She thought it was beautiful, and a lot more comfortable than wearing a complete disguise.

The way their `family' had.

***********~flashback, next day ~*************

Ninoriel had been gone. She had woken to find his things gone, and the entire evening came back to her. Dressing quickly, she had headed for the door, only to be stopped by her grandmother.

"What did you do with him?!" she had yelled, ducking under the older elf's hand as she tried to catch the panicked girl.

"Nothing you need to know about. Get back here!"

Through the window, she could see the little monsters who'd tormented her brother playing. That made her even angrier, but the thing her grandmother said next was unbearable.

"Your brother is a freak, you foolish girl! Do you know what people will say to you if they see him?"

That had been the first time she had changed. A white panther had leapt down from the porch, scattering the elven children, and then had run into the woods. And she had heard crying.

***********~dream ~*************

It was all shadowy in the forest. She had changed, and tried to come closer to him ,but he moved away from her.

"You shouldn't be here, Larien." he said, not even looking at her. "You're perfect. You're what they want. Go back. You can be happy at least. And normal." His voice cracked, and he began to cry again.

"I don't care what they want. I care what I want. I want us to be a family."

"I don't care what you want! I just want to be alone! Leave me alone!"

She looked at him, hurt. "But Nin-"

"I don't have a family. I don't need one."

His voice had changed. She stared at him, puzzled, then decided to try one more time.

"Nin, we can be a family. I can be your family. Everyone needs someone to depend on."

"Perhaps everyone does. Everyone except me."

She caught a flash of red eyes.

It wasn't her brother she was talking to anymore.

It was Hiei.

***********~end dream, to Hiei~*************

Hiei gently fiddled with the small crystal tear, wary of every little sound that echoed through the castle. That onna, that Larien, had seen him look at it. She had known exactly what it was, too. What it was from, where it was, and why he had glanced at it. She had said `Sorry.' She knew that she looked like an ice demon, and she knew that struck a spot in his heart, not exactly soft, but not exactly rock hard either.

He had sensed an incredible amount of sadness from Ninoriel. Did the neko know something about him as well? It seemed he had come to a place where they knew many things about him, and all he knew were their names, and what sort of demon they happened to be. What kind of trap was this? He was caught, set free, then asked to stay? It didn't make sense.

Suddenly, there was a loud, explosive sound from somewhere in another part of the castle. The sharp smell of acid flooded his senses, along with some strange spice, which made his eyes burn. An even louder roar sounded, deep and throaty, and his ears caught the rush of flames.

All went silent, and he was left staring at the door, wondering what was going on. And then the wall collapsed.

***********~end of chapter~*************
