Hiei/Raven all the way!! Woot woot! I feel no guilt in telling you this, because the black bird part was a major clue.

(If you are a fan of Teen Titans, and you still didn't figure it out, then I have failed as a writer…) On to the story!

Origins of Evil and the plan

"Long ago, at the beginning of the Warring States Era of Japan, There was a powerful Inu taiyoukai. The western lands were his domain and his eldest son, the pure-blooded one, took over after he supposedly died…"

"What do you mean `supposedly'?" Yusuke interrupted.

"I WILL NOT TOLERATE ANY INTERUPPTIONS!!" Koenma exploded in an uncharacteristic fit of rage. The gang understood for the first time how serious this was to have Koenma so upset and shaken. He cleared his throat and continued calmly. "…After his first affair, this great Inu youkai lusted after a young ningen princess and thus had a second son who was hanyou. Because of the impure blood of his second son, the youkai lord soon lost respect from his people. In the end, he had no choice but to kill himself and leave the world until he could reign again."

"But why kill himself? If he was cowardly, why not just have his subjects killed while he was hiding somewhere?" Hiei asked logically.

"It would have been impossible. Everyone would be looking for him, and he also knew that, through ancient magic, if he died and came back, he could be even more powerful than before. Before he died, he left his sons two swords, each forged from one of his fangs. Unknown to them both, he secretly had dark mikos secure his eternal soul in one blade and his power and ki in the other." Koenma sighed wearily. "Even I don't fully understand it."

"Now, after all these centuries, his essence has reawakened because of a rift in time, and his strength, already a force to be reckoned with, has increased tenfold." The story was complete and an eerie silence filled the room.

"We will need all the help we can get… which brings me to our next major problem…" Koenma's gaze swiveled around the room and fell on… Hiei.

Hiei's eyes met his straight on and the two engaged in a staring contest before Koenma finally backed down.

"Hiei, I believe you are the first case I've ever heard of, much less seen, in which a-" he coughed nervously here and stammered, knowing how touchy Hiei was on the subject. "… Forbidden child has shown signs of approaching demon heat. I suppose it would be too much to ask if your mate is anywhere near?"

"She's not." The outline of Hiei's jagan glowed beneath his white headband. "If she were anywhere on this CONTINENT, I would know."

The tense atmosphere was finally broken as Kuwabara and Yusuke burst out laughing.

"HAHAHA! You're telling me that little bastard is getting a mate?? HAHAhahaha…"

"Yeah! I mean, who's to say, he won't kill her if she turns out to have a personality like yours, Baka?"

"HAHA… wait, I'm not a baka!"

In three seconds flat, both foolish teenage boys were out cold on the floor. Hiei had used the hilt of his katana to knock them out before returning to his seat on the windowsill, smirking.

"Hn, and he says he's not a baka…"

Kurama, who had remained silent all this time, turned his inquisitive glance on Hiei.

"From what I know, we have about six months to gather forces and train. That is when demon mating season reaches its peak, and Hiei, you will become a danger to us if we don't find your mate."

"You mean I'm not a danger to you now? Damn, I have failed horribly…" Hiei's face remained emotionless. "We'll never win… I of course, would be able to fight this demon to my advantage, and I've no doubt that you and the baka detective over there could hold your own. But as for that idiot…" He jerked his head at Kuwabara's unconscious form, "He wouldn't last five minutes, and he would slow us down."

Koenma spoke up.

"I have an idea."

"Let's hear it then toddler!" quipped Yusuke, who just regained consciousness and his smart-aleck attitude; Kuwabara as well.

"Botan, GET UP HERE! And bring Yukina, Shizuru, and Genkai with you!"

"Right away, Koenma-sama!" came Botan's bubbly, cheerful voice.

A moment later, the girls entered. Botan's outrageous sky-blue hair and cute, bubblegum-pink eyes could be seen miles away, as could her way out-of-date kimono.

Shizuru strolled in, towering over the other girls with her trademark cigarette hanging out of her mouth.

Last, but not least, Yukina scooted in shyly. Her kimono was no more modern than Botan's, only hers was an aqua-green color.

"YUKINA-CHAN!" Kuwabara greeted her, cartoon hearts practically floating out of his eyes.

Yukina was distinctly uncomfortable. Over the years, she had slowly, but surely realized Kuwabara's utter adoration of her, and it was sweet. But really, she thought of him more as an older brother type of friend than anything else.

Speaking of older brothers, Hiei came to her rescue.

"You will allow my sister to extract herself from your arms if you wish to keep them on your body." (for the sake of the fic, Hiei has told Yukina about their relationship in case you didn't read the author's notes in the last chapter.)

Hiei kept his katana unsheathed until Kuwabara gulped and backed away. Koenma glared at their behavior.

"Ahem! As I was saying! My plan is this. Botan, you are absolutely POSITIVE your portals can teleport to any time and place?"

"uhmmm… yes."

"Well I will send the eight of you: Botan, Genkai, Shizuru, Yukina, Hiei, Yusuke, Kurama, and Kuwabara, to assemble the greatest fighters recorded in history. They are from different periods in time, so Botan, the actual time travel is in your hands."

"Yes sire." For once, there was no suppressed mirth in her eyes; she knew that if ever there was a time to be serious, this was it.

Koenma handed her a paper with different eras and places written on it. Her eyes widened. "Koenma-sama, the last place written on here is the present-day United States! Wouldn't it make more sense to-"

He silenced her with a look, and then he whispered to her.

"The first one you must get to join you is the eldest son of the enemy, himself."

"Can we trust him?"

"Of course! I wouldn't tell you to get him otherwise!"

"Let's get a move-on then!" Growled Genkai.

Her youthful appearance was quite striking. Her brown eyes were fresh once again, but still held the wisdom she had gained from her true years. In her younger state, Genkai's hair was once again it's natural pink and her small stature was petite, but firmly built.

"What are you staring at, slacker?!"

Yusuke's drool had begun to stain his shirt. He grumbled.

"I'm never going to get used to that old hag in her hot, young body…" Genkai's ki shot up and she neatly blasted him into a wall with a controlled spirit gun blast.

Shizuru looked on with mild interest, puffing her cigarette.

"Shizuru, I never want you to smoke those vile things in here again!" said Koenma crossly. She frowned.

"If you were going to make requests, the least you could have done was appear in your hot, teenage form…"

Shizuru winked at him coyly, and laughed at the Reikai king when he blushed.

Koenma straightened up, and then ordered Botan to create the portal.

The group stepped through, not knowing what to expect…

A/n phew! That was definitely longer! As a fee, I would adore some reviews! Please don't make me beg! It's degrading!!

At first, I was going to make this entire fic centered on Hiei, but then I thought, `well, I like Shizuru a lot too. And yusuke is the main character in the anime so he deserves some recognition … as does Kurama since he is one of the sexiest characters!..' so I'm going to branch out a little and try to get everyone's point of view at least once.

However, This is mostly Yu Yu hakusho, so the other three animes will not be mentioned until the tantei meets them.
