A/n- I sincerely apologize for the long wait, but you know how things can get…ive just started at a new high school and I won't say it sucked because I don't expect anyone to feel sorry for me. Anyhoo, as a fee, I will post two chapters for you. ENJOY! And please review for me!

The Youkai Ruler and his Ward

~~Sengoku Jedai, Warring States Era~~

Sesshomaru, Lord of the Western Lands, silently glided across Inuyasha's forest, deep in thought. Someone who knew the youkai lord well would notice the hint of stress in his golden eyes. However, to many, all that was visible was the emotionless expression spread on his noble face.

His young ward - well… his ward in any case - was by his side. Lord Sesshomaru gave an inward wistful smile.

The wide-eyed girl whom he had taken in was no longer a child, but some hints of innocence and mischief still leapt out of her eyes occasionally.

She had seen nine winters since he had taken her in, and had recently experienced her first red moon, much to the dismay of Jaken. The little toad demon had been ordered by Sesshomaru to explain to her what was happening with her body. (She is about fifteen years old.)

Despite the fact that she was only a little ningen girl, she was truly the only one he had left. Rin was like the pup he never had, although he would never tell her so.

"Sesshomaru-sama, might Rin pick some flowers?" He acknowledged her request by raising his chin a fraction of an inch. She, who was used to this, scurried away.

Sesshomaru was left alone to wander through the forest named after his late brother.

"Fool of a half-breed puppy…" Sesshomaru growled bitterly when he was sure he was alone.

He had reluctantly agreed to join forces with Inuyasha and his friends, mostly for Rin sake, to destroy the evil being Naraku. His idiot brother had died in the battle, but not before taking Naraku down with him. Sesshomaru had almost felt sorry for Inuyasha's wench, that Kagome girl.

She had made a wish on that infernal jewel after the battle was over, a wise one in his opinion. (wow, Sesshomaru complimenting someone? Pinch me! *pinch pinch pinch* OWCH!) She wished that any and all magic left in the jewel and herself would bind itself to the soul of a pure, good-hearted person.

Rin had received the very same powers that day, and therefore had the abilities of a miko now. Unfortunately for her, Kagome realized too late that that power was essential for her to time-travel.

Heartbroken at losing both her love, Inuyasha, - who died side-by-side with Kikyou - and her home in her time, she lived with Sango and Miroku. They had gotten married after the battle and had many children. Eventually, poor Kagome wasted away, but not before instructing Rin in the use of her powers with the help of Kaede.

He rarely had to worry about Rin now, except when he thought of his adoptive daughter getting old and eventually dying, as all ningen had to do.

Sesshomaru would, of course, maintain his realm, which he had placed some of his more loyal servants in charge of for now. However, and as much as he would never admit to it, life would get much… lonelier for him.

It would be nice to have someone to share his long, almost endless, life with. He wanted someone who would comfort him when Rin died. Someone whose strength he could respect and would be by his side forever.

A soft voice spoke in the back of his mind. `Admit it, you want a mate.' Unwillingly he answered back.

`What would I need with a mate?'

`Do you really need to ask? You just supplied yourself with a list of reasons.'

`Silence yourself! I've no patience for stupid voices in my head today!' He felt the chatter fade away, and received an ominous foreboding feeling. As if something important was coming, but before he could perceive it, the feeling melted away.

Sesshomaru, supreme taiyoukai, ruler of the Western Lands, and son of the great Inutaisho, unknowingly wanted to take a mate.

He had no idea how close to finding her, he was…

A/n- okay, so maybe that wasn't so long of a chapter, but it did make some important points that will come into play later on.

Sesshomaru wants a mate (even if he wont admit it)

Kagome and Inuyasha are dead. Yes, unfortunately, its true. I'm more worried about losing readers than getting flamed, so please hear me out.

I really got annoyed with stories that always made Kagome emerge as the only survivor after the final battle with Naraku. Usually, it would be that Inuyasha, Miroku, and Sango all died. Well, this time Kagome and Inuyasha died, which, to me seemed more realistic. Real life isn't all about the hero (or in this case heroine) living in the end. BUT I REALLY DON'T HAVE ANYTHING AGAINST THEM!!! KAGOME/INUYASHA FOREVER!!! (I love kikyou too, but I just don't think her and Inuyasha were meant to be…)

Sesshomaru's father's name will be Inutaisho in this fic. I read that once in another fic, and I thought it was very appropriate for Inu and Sesshy's father. In case you haven't realized yet, he IS the villain in this fic!!

I understand a lot of you will think Seshomaru is completely OOC, but really, when he is alone, no one really knows his mannerisms and how he thinks, so he could be completely IN character and we would never know! ^_^; I just confused myself.
