Chapter 3
Normal POV
Yusuke and Genkai sat silently in the living room quarter of her temple. It had been almost a half an hour since Genkai informed Koenma. They hadn't seen Kuwabara since the incident.
Yusuke was sitting quietly but as time passed he started to lose his patience and began to pace around the room. Genkai stayed where she was and closed her eyes, so as to not be bothered by Yusuke's behavior.
“Where they hell are they? Botan and Kurama should have been here by now,” Yusuke said out loud as continued to walk in circles.
“Just shut your trap and sit down. Your complaining isn't going to get them here any faster.”
Yusuke was about to say something back when someone stepped into the room. It was Botan and Kurama.
“Botan! Kurama! It's about time,” Yusuke exclaimed.
Botan didn't have her normal cheerful face like she usually does. Kurama was hard to say. But it was noticeable that he was upset as well.
“I've filled Kurama in on the details from what I know. We tried to find Hiei but couldn't find him anywhere,” Botan explained.
Kurama gave the room a quick glance, and then looked back to Yusuke.
“I take it that Kuwabara isn't taking this well.”
Yusuke shook his head. Genkai opened her eyes and looked towards Kurama and Botan.
“When will Koenma be here?”
“He said that he'll be here once he took care of something,” Botan said.
Botan and Kurama decided to sit down while they waited for Koenma. Yusuke looked at Kurama. He seemed to be thinking of something and Yusuke thought he knew what. So he spoke.
“What do we tell Hiei when he gets here Kurama?”
“The only thing that we can. We'll tell him what happened and pray for the best.”
Yusuke didn't like that answer. But once he thought it over himself it did seem like the best thing to do. After that no one said anything for a while. About five minutes later Koenma showed up.
“Hello everyone.”
Everyone looked towards him with blank stares. Considering the circumstances it didn't bother him. Koenma looked around and noticed that both Hiei and Kuwabara weren't present.
“Where are Hiei and Kuwabara?”
“No clue about Hiei but we should leave Kuwabara alone for now,” Yusuke said.
Koenma nodded his head in understanding. He stayed where he was standing, deciding that he didn't want to sit, and started to speak again.
“I heard from Genkai what has happened. It's unfortunate that something like this had to happen to Yukina. Yusuke. From what I heard you were the one fighting the demon. What else can you tell me about it?”
Yusuke crossed his arms and tilted his head back in thought. He was trying to come up with words that would best describe what happened. Finally he thought he had a good way of explaining it. He looked back to Koenma and started to explain it the best he could.
During Yusuke's explanation something about the demon reminded Koenma about something similar. Beginning to fear that it could be the same, despite how long it's been, he interrupted Yusuke to ask.
“I'm sorry to interrupt Yusuke but can you tell me more of what the demon looked like or maybe even its name?”
“Actually I can tell you its name. Just before it ran away it said its name was Naraku.”
Hearing what he feared it could have been Koenma slowly started to stumble backwards. Catching himself he stopped himself from falling. Everyone looked at him worriedly.
Botan was in the middle of getting up with a frightened look on her face while asking, “Koenma! Are you alright?”
After recovering Koenma sat down. He covered his face with both of his hands. Speaking from behind his hands he said, “I'm fine Botan. But this situation has just changed for the worst.”
Everyone looked at Koenma with gaping mouths. Kurama recovered first.
“What do you mean?”
Koenma took a minute to recompose himself. When he was ready he removed his hands from his face and looked at the group in front of him.
“What I mean is exactly what I said. If this demon is truly who he says he is than that means we have some serious trouble ahead of us.”
Koenma took a second to breath and let it sink into the others. Once he felt he waited long enough he started again.
“I may get some facts messed up here and there since it's been so long. But I never would have thought that I would need to remember him. I guess I'll start from the beginning. Naraku is not of this world in a sense.”
Interrupting him Yusuke blurted out, “ Not of this world? Than where the hell did he come from?”
“If you would shut up Yusuke then I'd be able to tell you. Like I said Naraku is, in a sense, not of this world. That's because he shouldn't even be here in this time period.”
Everyone continued to look at him with gaping mouths.
“He's actually about 550 years old. The last time I saw and heard of him was during the Feudal Era. During that time he was a menace to both humans and demons. But he wasn't always a demon. In fact he's only half.”
Yusuke interrupted Koenma for a second time.
“Wait a minute Koenma. What do you mean he wasn't always a demon?”
“If I remember correctly he basically gave his body to demons in order to become one of them.”
“How awful,” Botan said.
“Yes. I could tell you much more about him but it would probably be best to save the long details for later. In short he caused trouble for both humans and demons. Until one day he just disappeared.”
“Disappeared?” Kurama asked.
“That was the best way to put it. But there was actually a small group of travelers that were trying to stop him. They were kindof like my unofficial Spirit Detectives back than. Though they never met me and I never made contact with them. Most of the group all had one thing in mind though, which led them to work together. Revenge.” Koenma explained.
“Revenge?” Genkai asked.
Koenma closed his eyes as he continued.
“Yes. As it turned out three out of five of them all had a personal reason to kill Naraku. For each something very important was taken away. For there sakes, even though they're dead, I'll not get into that. But as it turns out none of them made it out alive in their final confrontation with Naraku.”
“Then how did Naraku disappear?” Kurama asked.
“Before their final battle with him they teamed up with an undead miko. She was killed as well but before she died she managed to seal him away along with what was making him so powerful.”
“And what exactly was making him so powerful?” Yusuke asked.
“The Jewel of Four Souls, or going by what most people called it, Shikon no Tama, or Shikon Jewel.”
“The Shikon Jewel!” Kurama almost yelled out.
Everybody, minus Koenma, looked at Kurama.
“What's so special about this jewel?” Botan asked.
“To put it simply it can increase a demons power to unimaginable levels. Even a single shard can make any demon dangerous. But what makes it worse is that when whole it can grant any one wish. But after that the jewel is useless, which is probably why no one has made a wish. They didn't want to lose that power,” explained Kurama.
“Kurama pretty much explained it all. When Naraku was sealed with the jewel he just completely disappeared. That's why Spirit World wasn't able to do anything about him. But know he's back and I have no idea how,” Koenma said, looking down at the floor.
The room was filled with silence. Everyone got the idea of what it meant. During the silence Yusuke began to think. He thought back to when Genkai asked him who he was and what he wanted. Yusuke looked towards Koenma.
“Hey Koenma. I have a question for you. This Naraku guy said something before he left and I'm not sure what he meant.”
Koenma looked at him to show he was listening.
“He said something like he was after something. But he's not able to get it now but said that he should be able to get it in some time. What was he talking about?”
Koenma thought about it for a minute. Finally he looked at Yusuke again and said, “I have no idea. He shouldn't be talking about the jewel because it was sealed with him so he should have it.”
Genkai stood up from where she had been sitting. She looked at the group and said, “There's no point in worrying about it right now when there isn't much we can do. All we can do for now is get some rest and discuss a strategy in the morning. Yusuke. You, Kuwabara, and Kurama can stay here for the night but you better not do anything stupid to annoy me.”
“We need to get going. I'll have Botan report back here in the morning. Good night,” Koenma said as he turned and walked away.
Botan gave a quick good night as she hurried out after Koenma. Kurama apologized, saying he couldn't stay the night, but would be back first thing in the morning. After he left Genkai went to retire for the night and Yusuke decided to go out and find Kuwabara.
When Yusuke found him he was sitting on a boulder and staring up at the night sky.
“Hey Kuwabara. Come on back,” Yusuke yelled loud enough so that he could hear.
Kuwabara remained where he was, like he didn't even hear him. Yusuke decided to walk over to him. When he was standing next to him Kuwabara still didn't move. Yusuke was about to say something when Kuwabara spoke.
“It's all my fault that this happened. If my powers hadn't disappeared than I could have done something.”
Kuwabara looked down at the ground. Yusuke wasn't sure if he should yell at him. He knew this was more of a serious situation to Kuwabara than himself.
“Kuwabara. Don't go blaming yourself like that. I wasn't even able to stop him.”
Yusuke placed his hand on his friends shoulder.
“Don't worry. We'll get her back. I swear it. Now come on. Lets get some rest.”
