Chapter 9: Secret Meetings
"Why haven't you been doing your job?" snarled the taller demon. He had long black hair and cinnamon eyes.
"I have. Give me time, this is a delicate operation," answered the shorter demon. His short back hair contrasted sharply with his pale skin and ice blue eyes.
"I have given you plenty of time! Either those swords show their power by next week, or you will find yourself without a job or a head!"
"Yes sir." Korye bowed.
Bill growled. "And do a good job of it, boy."
"I will sir." Korye bowed again and disappeared.
~Elsewhere~
"So, what are we supposed to do? We know he's getting more and more violent…" Kurama stopped as Yusuke held up a hand.
"Calm down. We know you like her, but you have to calm down or we'll never be able to help her."
"I say we call Koenma," Kurama stated.
"Why?" Kuwabara asked.
"I want to know if we are just supposed to protect her, or if we're supposed to try to get her to remember her life as the swords."
Yusuke called Koenma and Kurama asked him. "Yes," the toddler replied, "You are supposed to help her remember."
Kurama nodded before walking off. "Where are you going?" called Yusuke.
"It doesn't matter. I'll be back later."
Yusuke and Kuwabara shrugged while Hiei headed off on his own as well.
~With Kurama~
He rang the doorbell nervously. He'd gone to the school's web site and found out where Kenny lived from the student directory. A small woman answered the door. She had long black hair, and it was obvious where Kara got most of her beauty.
"Hello, you must be Mrs. Rosuto, I was wondering if Kara was home," he said politely.
"Yes, I am, and she is. Would you like to come in?" the woman answered. Kurama smiled at her and stepped inside, while she went up the stairs to get her daughter. Kenny came downstairs almost immediately.
She smiled when she saw Kurama. "Kurama! What are you doing here?" Then she frowned slightly. "Why are you here?"
"I'm sorry, I guess I shouldn't have come…"
"No, no, it's ok… Let's talk in my room." She walked up the stairs into a messy bedroom and cleared the chair of papers, all of which had things written on them, the shut the door.
"Kurama," she said, turning toward him, "Why did you come? You know I'm going to get beaten for this, not now because my mom is here, but later…"
"I'm really sorry, I wasn't thinking…"
She shook her head. "Nevermind. So, did you need to talk to someone?"
"Yes. I needed to talk to you about… About certain things. How much of your past do you remember?"
Her eyes widened as she looked at him. How could he have known? "I… I can't remember anything before about 3 years ago…"
He nodded. "Memory loss… I know who you were…"
~With Hiei~
"Are you sure, Sarah?"
"Yes. Calm down, it's just a McDonald's." Sarah grinned and watched as Hiei had his version of a nervous breakdown.
"Fine. But I warn you…"
"Shut up and just come inside already," said Sarah, who was already inside the McDonalds.
Hiei `hn'ed and went inside. Sarah ordered and paid for the food. The cashier gave her an odd look, but both of them ignored it.
"See, this isn't so bad," Sarah said as she and Hiei sat down and began to eat. Korye and Amanda walked in, and Sarah motioned them over.
"Hey! Looks like we had the same idea," Amanda commented.
"I had to drag Hiei in here all but kicking and screaming," Sarah said, which made Hiei blush and mutter something about a `baka onna'.
Amanda and Korye laughed and they started talking.
~Back with Kenny and Kurama~
"I was what?!" Kenny seemed upset to learn about her past. "Please Kurama, please tell me this is a joke."
"It's not, Kenny. I'm sorry…"
"No, you have nothing to be sorry for. Is that why Bill beats me?"
"Yes." Kurama looked at the ground, and saw one of Kenny's papers. He read the poem on it while Kenny also stared at the ground.
`Night Call'
Can you hear her?
She calls, they call.
In the dark,
Shadows steal the light,
And other things come to play.
Can you hear the call?
The night beckons,
Her creatures call,
As her brothers and sisters
Stars and Moon
Glitter, offering
Danger, yet also
The calmest peace of all,
Sleep, and his twin Death
Run rampant.
"Did you write this?" Kurama questioned after reading the poem.
"I wrote almost everything in this room…" Kenny answered. "Why?"
"No reason…"
Kenny sighed as she heard the door open. "Bill is home. It's best if you go now."
Kurama nodded, then paused and kissed Kenny gently on the lips. He left, and Kenny followed him. It wasn't Bill. Sarah was at the door. "Oh, Kenny, I was just about to call you."
Kenny nodded and numbly invited Sarah in, still staring after Kurama.
"What's the matter, Ken? You look like you've seen a ghost!"
"Kissed by a demon, more like…" Kenny muttered, but Sarah didn't hear. (A/N: Yes, Kurama told her he's a demon, but not about Bill or Hiei being demons…)
"Guess what?"
"What?" Kenny was quickly getting caught up in Sarah's enthusiasm.
"I managed to drag Hiei somewhere public for a date!"
"I'm happy for you, Sarah."
"What's the… Oh, Kurama, Bill… The whole `situation'?" Sarah asked. None of her friends had told anyone about the beatings at Kenny's request.
"Yeah. He'll find out. He always does." Kenny sighed. "You better go too, it's not going to be pretty when he gets home…" Her mom had just left to go to work.
"Hey, if he does anything… Let me know."
"But Sarah, Mom loves him! I can't let her know…"
Sarah sighed. Kenny was too self-sacrificing, always giving and never asking for anything other than others' happiness.
"Alright. But if you end up in the ICU, I can't guarantee his safety."
"Deal." Kenny smiled at Sarah as she left.

KD: Bit of fluff there… I don't own McDonald's, and just so you know, yes I wrote that poem, it's mine, and you have to ask before I let you use it!
Sarah: Who cares?
KD: *Ignoring Sarah* If enough people like my poetry I might just make an archive for it… Let me know. Review, people! Come on!
Sarah: I'm going to kill you now.
Hiei: Get in line.
Sarah: I don't think so!
Hiei and Sarah: *Start arguing*
Kurama and KD: *Sweatdrop*
