Hiei finally stood up after several moments of just thinking. He wasn't exactly sure what he was thinking about but he knew he was thinking. The three continued their trek to the arcade, Yusuke and Kurama more hesitant to pull ahead. They walked on either side of Hiei, all three with their hands in their pockets. None of them said a word until Yusuke decided it was time to speak up.
“So what was with that?” Yusuke asked, he didn't look at the shorter teenager.
“It was nothing,” Hiei replied.
“Bullshit,” Yusuke argued back.
“Drop it, Yusuke.” Hiei said, agitation hinting at his voice. Yusuke glared at him then let the subject die. The three saw Kuwabara leaning against the wall of the arcade and walked over to him. The orange haired teen wore blue jeans a black shirt without the sleeves missing stylishly. It really was too warm for him to be wearing anything over the shirt.
“Hey Kuwabara,” Yusuke said.
“Yo, Yusuke. Hey Kurama, sup Shorty?” Kuwabara asked, shrugging himself away from the wall. Hiei glared up at the taller teenager and then rolled his eyes and looked away.
“He's not in the mood Kuwabara,” Yusuke spoke up. Kuwabara looked at the black haired teen and blinked.
“Why? What happened?”
“Just…something,” Yusuke said, “Wanna grab something to eat?”
“Not hungry,” Hiei replied and started walking. Yusuke sighed and ran his hands back through his hair.
“You two go ahead, we'll catch up,” Kurama said and walked after Hiei. Yusuke nodded and he and Kuwabara walked for the nearest pizza place. Kurama walked quickly to catch up with Hiei then slowed his pace as he caught up. Hiei walked with a scowl set on his face and his hands shoved in his pockets.
“What do you want?” Hiei asked.
“I'm just worried about you,” Kurama said as they walked into the park. No matter which way they went Hiei always seemed to get them up in a park. He was the best tree climber of the group since they'd met at age four and he would sit in trees for hours. Sometimes he'd throw things at Kuwabara from his high perch.
“You don't have to be,” Hiei said as he walked towards a tree and reached up to climb it.
“Hiei,” Kurama sighed as he wrapped his arm around the teen's slender waist and pulled him down, then against him. Hiei grasped for the tree but when he didn't get a good grip he stumbled back against Kurama.
“Let me go,” he demanded, but Kurama only slipped his other arm around his waist and held him closer.
“Why are you being like this? Who was that?” Kurama asked into Hiei's ear. Hiei looked off to the side so his head was away from the green eyed human. Kurama put on a small frown, something of a pout, “Hiei.”
“It was my dad.” The black haired teen replied. Kurama froze for a minute before slipping back slightly.
“Your dad?”
“Yeah,” Hiei said and nodded a bit, “I think so at least. No one's eyes could freeze me up like that.”
“You have a restraining order,”
“Void as of last month. Have to get it signed in court again and-”
“-can't without a parent's signature…” Kurama finished softly. Hiei only nodded in reply. Kurama sighed and pulled Hiei back against him, nuzzling his cheek against the red eyed human. Hiei lightly turned his head against Kurama's soft skin, it was comforting and calming in away.
“My mom died a few years ago, I haven't had a legal guardian since. There's no way my dad will sign something to keep him away from me. And a court wouldn't believe me if I told them,” Hiei said. Something about Kurama made him want to spill it all. Kurama had always listened.
“We'll figure something out, don't worry,” Kurama said and slipped away from Hiei, “Let's not worry about it now.”
Hiei nodded and the two walked for the pizza place that Kuwabara and Yusuke were waiting. The two stepped inside and walked over to where the two teens sat.
“Everything sorted out?” Yusuke asked. Kurama gave a small nod and ordered a Coke, while Hiei ordered nothing. When he said he wasn't hungry he meant it. Kuwabara and Yusuke both sipped at their own sodas and continued their conversation about which arcade game was the stupidest before Kuwabara stepped in.
“So what happened Shorty?” he asked. All six sets of eyes turned to look straight at Hiei except for Kurama who looked at the slouching teen out of the corner of his eye. Hiei didn't respond, just stayed slouched in his corner with his arms crossed.
“They have the right to know, Hiei.” Kurama said.
“I don't have to tell them,” Hiei shot back.
“Come on, we're as much your friends as Kurama.” Yusuke told him, his brow furrowing in annoyance.
“I doubt that,” Hiei replied in a tone more muttered to himself. Yusuke blinked then finally understood.
“You know that isn't what I meant Hiei,” he said, “I meant you can tell us.”
“Hn,” Hiei replied and glared out the window at the people who walked past. Yusuke glared at the stubborn teenager before he looked to Kurama who shook his head. Kuwabara rolled his eyes and slouched in his own seat, one of his legs stretched out from under the table.
“You're too stubborn for your own good, shrimp,” he said. Hiei shot him a glare to chill blood and Kuwabara looked off across the pizza parlor.
“Don't glare at him for caring,” Yusuke snapped. Hiei turned his fiery glare to Yusuke who only returned the glare, “Stop being such a bastard.”
“I should be so lucky,” Hiei said to himself. Yusuke blinked and the glare lightened.
“Huh?” He asked, Kuwabara looked back over.
“Is this about your Dad?” Kuwabara asked. Hiei turned to look back out the window, avoiding the looks of both the humans.
“If we've figured it out you could at least tell us!” Yusuke shouted, some of the people sitting around him looked at him. He ignored them, but Kurama didn't.
“Yusuke, keep your voice down,” he said softly.
“Like hell I will. Is that what it is Hiei? Your Dad's back in town?” Yusuke asked looking at him.
“Don't you have a restraining order or something?” Kuwabara questioned.
“Void as of last month,” Kurama said. Hiei shot him a look and only Kurama could really see the annoyed betrayal behind it, “They do have the right to know.”
“What do you think we're going to do? Tell him where you are?” Yusuke asked, shooting Hiei a bewildered look. Hiei glared back at him.
“Hn.”
Yusuke screamed a small frustrated scream and slouched back crossing his arms. Kuwabara covered his face with his hands then rested them on the table and Kurama sighed just softly.
“If you're going to be such a prick then be that way but don't think we'd betray you for one second you little asswipe,” Yusuke swore. Hiei only glared out the window.
