Jealousy
"You....you bastard!" Fuyu yelled, slamming her fists on the ground. "And you, little sister, you didn't hesitate to leave!" She ran her fingers over the crystal blocks of ice, two figures visible in each one. "So, I'll get you before you can leave. I won't lose you, too."
~~
I shifted my weight in his arms, not aware that I was even awake.
"Feeling any better?"
I nodded unconsciously.
~
"I won't let you leave."
~
"How long do you plan to stay?" he asked quietly.
"As long as I can. Does forever sound alright to you?" I smiled at my own remark.
~
"You'll stay. You won't abandon me."
~
He smiled back. "Good, I want to show you something today."
"What's that?" I gave him a questioning look.
"You'll just have to wait and see."
~
"I won't let you."
~
I followed him outside and through the crowded city streets.
~
"Because you're my sister, and I'm watching out for you."
~
"We're going to have some fun now that you are feeling up to it." he explained.
~
"That's what were supposed to do, ne? Protect each other."
~
A few hours later, the music in the place Kurama had taken me quieted down, and we began to dance much more slowly.
"I didn't know you could dance." I said, my hands in his.
"You never asked. And where did you learn?"
"Stupid boy, I'm over six thousand years old. You tend to pick up on these things after that long." I paused. "And what about you, kitsune?"
I felt him shake his head. "You tend to lose count after about a thousand."
Then, there was the carnival. He was right, ningen things could be fun....I added, "Only the things that go fast enough to do something stupid on."
He got the hint that I didn't like crowded places, so I agreed to the park.
A few more weeks passed before I had my dream.....
"Leave them alone! Fuyu! Stop!" I yelled.
"Why should I? They would have tried to leave sooner or later! Just like you're trying to leave me for a human!" Fuyu began to cry crystal tears through her anger. "You'll end up just like mother!" No, she would end up like mother at this rate. I was almost crying at the sight of Natsu and Aki, trapped in the blocks of ice. Is that what she wanted?
"Don't say that! You're my sister! I'd never forget about you!"
"Liar! It's all lies! If you're too blind to see what's more important, then I'll make you remember! You're season has just started! I still have power! And he will be dead within days!"
"Fuyu! Don't do this!" But she faded before I could finish.
~~~~~~~~
I awoke with a start, being careful not to wake up Kurama who was lying next to me. I glanced at the clock. It was still early. Good. I slipped gently out of his grasp and pulled my pendant from my pocket.
"May my spirit protect you." I slipped it around his neck, opened the window, and was gone in a flash of displaced air. Being sisters, we always had linked thoughts and dreams, but seeing into Fuyu's cold mind could be very disturbing. I had no time to think. The Realm of Seasons was calling me.
~~~~~~~~~
"Nani?! They're fighting again?!" Koenma yelled.
"I'm sorry, Koenma-sama! I though everything was finished." Botan explained.
"Well, what's it over this time?"
"We're not sure, but the forces of summer and autumn are gone. And the force of spring is showing up in the Ningenkai, but Haru is in the Realm of Seasons."
~~~~~~~~~
I dodged again. Blades of ice came from the walls themselves. We were both losing power fast. I could tell that after these hours of battle, Fuyu was getting desparate. She would use the power of her pendant to summon her spirit. I would do the same, but I didn't have my pendant to aid me. With the pendant, I would be out for days. Without it....well, let's not go there.
"I'm giving you one last chance to back down!" Fuyu yelled.
"No."
"Then you'll die!"
"As long as you come with me!"
~~~~~~~~~
Everyone in Koenma's office had to shield their eyes from the blinding light that came from the screen. Koenma was the first to speak at the sight.
"This....This can't be."
~~~~~~~~~
(Natsu's POV)
I fell to the ground next to Aki after being freed from the ice. But, who saved us? I gasped at the sight. Haru was lying unmoving on the ground whil Fuyu had suffered something much more gruesome. She was pinned to the wall with one of Haru's plants. Fuyu was gone, there was no doubt in that, but Haru....could she be alive? I didn't sense the spirit of her pendant.
"Haru? Can you hear me? Haru! Wake up!" Aki kneeled, holding Haru close, but there were no signs of life.
"It's hard, but they're both gone."
"No!" she snapped. "I can still hear her heart beating! We haven't lost her!" Aki cried. Then, she calmed down. "What about her pendant?"
"She couldn't have simply lost it. Whoever she gave it to was someone special. Let them keep it."
Aki nodded in response.
"We'll give Fuyu a proper burial. She was our sister, no matter how corrupt she might have been."
~~~~~~~~
"So, I'm not dead. My body is still alive. What am I?" I looked over myself, then to the body in my sister's arms. "Natsu-chan! Aki-chan!"
No response.
"They can't hear me....no one can. That means....oh, K-Kurama...."
I sat err....floated through Fuyu's burial. They then placed my living body into my room inside my tower.
"Where to now?" I heard Natsu ask.
"We're going to see Kurama." Aki answered.
"The stupid boy?"
"Yes, the stupid boy. Haru loved him. He should know."
I slapped the palm of my hand against my forehead. "Is nothing I do a secret anymore?!" That's when my thoughts went back to a few days before.
In the park, there was no one. Well, who knew Kurama liked flowers? I didn't until then. He gave me a rose just as perfect as the ones I made for spring. Then, I made my own. That's when we started a contest to se who could make the best, most beautiful flower. I'm still laughing. We couldn't decide. That's when Kurama shook the tree branch behind us and Hiei promptly fell to the ground.
"Well, which is better?" I asked.
"I don't know. You're the botanists." Hiei answered.
"But we need a neutural party to decide."
"Both look fine." he said without looking.
Well, it took Hiei long enough to decide that mine was better. Of course, he still didn't look. Well, Aki and Natsu were going to see Kurama. I might as well go to listen to what they have to say. I followed them easily until we reached his home, and they went inside. I was about to follow when....
"Were you truely so naive?"
"Fuyu?!" I turned to her, floating yards beside me in the air.
"We're both gone. You're just dying, that's all. You'll join me forever here, and the boy will be no more."
"Why won't you leave him alone?! We're both dead! Together! Isn't that good enough?!"
She laughed at me. "Of course not. I want to see his spirit separate from that feeble body of his. Only then will I be satistied."
My anger boiled over. So, I hit the bitch. People couldn't hit ghosts, but ghosts could hit other ghosts.
"FUYU!"
We both looked around for the voice.
"FUYU!"
I saw the shadow figure build up behind her. She saw it moments after me.
"Damn it!" she swore and took off. I froze in my tracks, but it didn't attack me.
"Haru? Sister of spring?" it asked in a softer tone.
"Hai."
"So, you're the one that's cause so much talk in the worlds, giving your life to kill you sister."
"And?"
"For her deeds, she'll go to Hell. You, on the other hand, could remain this way forever."
"I'm going to be floating around FOREVER?! What happens when Kurama finally decides to move on? What happens when everyone forgets that I ever existed? Will I stay to watch the end of the world?!"
"Not exactly. You can stay here as long as you wish and leave for the Reikai when you wish."
"But what about my responsibility? What happens to my season?"
"It will be left to Natsu. Winter will be left to Aki."
"But what about the people who still care?! What about Natsu and Aki?! Most importantly, what about Kurama?!"
"Sorry, Haru. You'll have to ask one of the Reikai ferrygirls. I don't deal with the good souls, just the bad ones. Whistle if you need me." And it disappeared with that.
"But wait....I'm not dead yet. My body's still alive. I'm in a coma, and I'm dying. So what? The Reikai decided to pull me from my body because they knew I was going to die?"
"Bingo!" The girl in the pink kimono floated down on her oar to get right in my face.
"So, you're one of the ferrygirls?"
"And bingo again! You win the prize!"
"Well, aren't you 'Miss Merry Sunshine'. Hey! I'm not dead! Why the hell am I here?!"
"You see....we're not sure."
I sweatdropped. "You don't know why I'm here?"
"You're supposed to be dead, but something is keeping you here by a little, tiny thread." Her facial expression saddened. "I fear the same for Kurama."
That caught my attention. "Go on. I've got forever, but I'd like you to move it."
"The book of Reikai said it won't be much longer if no one does anything."
"IS there anything I can do at this point? I'm a ghost! No one can see or hear me!"
"That's why we're going to see Koenma! He brought Yusuke back to life! Maybe he can do the same for you!" She grabbed my hand and dragged me farther and farther into the sky.
"Wait a second! Hey!" But she wouldn't let go.
~~~~~~~~
"I WHAT?!"
"You can't go to the Spirit World yet." Koenma replied.
"Well why the hell not?! I'm dead, aren't I?!" I yelled back.
"But your body isn't dead."
"Then put me back in it!"
"I can't do that either."
I groaned in annoyance and rolled my eyes.
He replied before I could ask why, "You're body isn't strong enough to support your spirit right now. You could recover, or you could end up like this for all eternity."
"Jack-ass! If you can't put me back in my damn body then I'm leaving untli you find a way!" I began to storm out when the office door opened. "Yusuke! Talk some sense into this asshole!"
He just yawned and walked past me. "So, what's new? I was trying to sleep in."
The stupid oaf followed. "Urameshi, I don't think we should be in here. There's somethin' there."
"No shit!" I shouted. I turned to the toddler who was looking at me oddly. "Why can't they see me? Spirits can be seen in the Reikai!"
"You're missing the point." he began. "You're trapped in a stage between life and death."
"Uhhh....who are you talking to?" KuwaBAKA asked stupidly.
"Try this." The pacifier-boy held up a ball about the size of my fist. "Try to lift it."
I walked (Yes, I'm walking at this point) over to him and grabbed it with ease. The two Reikai Tantei seemed....disturbed.
"It's a ghost!" the fool yelled.
A smirk crossed my lips. "I can pick things up....therefore, I can throw things!" I threw it at the idiot, and it hit him square in the forehead. "Alright! Score one for me! In your face, asshole!"
Yusuke burst out laughing.
Even Koenma was laughing!
Botan walked in, ignoring Yusuke's histerics. "Koenma-sama, Aki and Natsu refused to make an appearance, and I haven't been able to find Kurama since they told him.
"Oh shit....Damn it!" I screamed.
"What? What's wrong?" Botan questioned.
"Follow me! Get those two to follow you! Kurama is going to die a lot sooner if we don't hurry!" I don't think they understood a word I said.
~~~~~~~~
"And even in death, I will never stop haunting you. You'll pay with much more than your life. I promise it will be long and very painful."
Kurama fell to the ground, breath coming a gasps. Haru stood over him, but the voice....that voice of Fuyu which only came in his nightmares was once again real. And he could only curse himself for believing it was her. Fuyu had taken him outside the city and began her attack.
"Don't fear. Death will come soon enough." She pulled her hand back for one final blow.
"Fuyu!" It was a dead voice, but it was heard clearly with anger. This was Haru's voice, but she sounded evil and almsot sadistic. There was a flash of light before Haru's body fell limply to the ground. "Stay the hell out!"
"You...." came the voice. That's when the two spirits were visable. Normal humans couldn't see them, but everyone was able with concentration.
"I'll send you to Hell for everything you've done."
Fuyu laughed at her younger sister's remark.
'I can pick up things so I can probably still use my ki.' She shrugged in her thoughts. "It's worth a shot."
"What are you muttering? Will this be another pathetic attempt to get rid of me?" She was suddenly bound by the branches that shot up from the ground. "What the hell is this?!"
"Soul-binding plants. Looks like the botanist has you beat." She then whistled as loud as she could. The forested area went fiery red with a mixture of black. "Did I mention that I made a friend?"
"Damn you! Damn the stupid boy! DAMN YOU ALL!"
And in one black sweep, Fuyu was gone and the area returned to normal. Haru's half spirit disappeared from sight, the effects of death finally taking hold.
~~~~~~~~
I only watched everyone rush to Kurama's side.
"You stupid boy! You can't die!" I yelled, knowing no one would hear me. Then it hit me. "This is....this is my fault."
"I'm alright. Don't worry." he said in almost a whisper.
"Stop lying!" I yelled, ghostly tears streaming down my face. "You're not alright! I can feel your pain through the pendant...." That's when I noticed that my body was missing.
~~~~~~~~
"You get one night to say your good-byes. We can't support you for any longer than that. Direct contact with another life force is the only other way to live." Aki explained to me.
"I'm thankful to have just that. I-I can't tell you how much this means to me." I replied, staring down at my body.
"Use it wisely. You only have until the sun rises tomorrow morning, and sunset is only an hour away." Natsu said. "Are you ready?"
I nodded and prepared to make one final appearance....
