Chapter 5: Secrets and Trust

The hang out spot turned out to be a recreation spot for teens: it had a grill, some arcade games, a pool table, and an air hockey table. By the time Dwenny and Yami had arrived, it was already full of buzzing teens. But they still managed to find a table near the back. Dwenny put Bestian on the seat next to her, who immediately curled up and went to sleep. Yami sat opposite of them. After ordering some drinks, both just kinda sat there, not knowing where to begin.

Dwenny finally broke the silence. "So Yami, tell me a bit about yourself. All I really know is that you're a spirit that lives inside the Millennium Puzzle, and that you help Yugi out."

Yami sighed. "There's not really much more I can tell you. All I know about my past is that it lies in Ancient Egypt."

"Can't remember your past? How…sad," Dwenny murmured.

"I have a question for you. You said that powerful magick senses other powerful magick, but how can you sense me, while I am unable to sense you?"

Dwenny frowned a little, thinking. "When we first met, I sensed something that was hidden, even from you. It's possible that because of this hidden power, knowledge, or whatever it may be, you are unable to sense other magick, unless it is being used directly against you. Or unless it's a very strong evil, and you sense danger from it."

A hidden power? Yami thought. It must have something to do with my past. But what? And where could Dwenny fit in?

"I felt some of you magick as you were breaking that trapping spell. It's quite powerful. Where did you learn it from?"

"My mother was a witch. She started teaching me shortly before her death. After she died, I kept up the study on my own. I still have much to learn though."

Yami was about to ask her about the specifics of her magick, when suddenly the door opened with a loud clang. Yami turned, curious as to what caused the noise. A young blonde man, probably around 20 or so, walked in through the open door. He wore dark jeans, a black shirt, as well as a leather jacket. He easily made his way around the tables, stopping at their table.

Oh no, oh no, Dwenny thought, growing slightly irritated. Not now!

The young man took off the sunglasses he was wearing. His intense blue eyes gazed down at Dwenny. "Cerridwen, a word with you," he said in a commanding tone. "Now."

Dwenny looked at him coolly. "I'm a bit busy right now."

The young man grew angry at this. "This is not a request. This is an order!" With that, he roughly grabbed her arm and jerked her to her feet.

"Hey…!" was all Dwenny could get out before he began dragging her out of the diner, causing some people to stare.

Bestian, sensing trouble, woke up. He hopped off his seat and followed them out the door. Yami decided to follow as well. He was concerned for Dwenny's safety. He followed Bestian out the door, down the street a little, and into a nearby alley. What he saw enraged him: the young man had a hand around Dwenny's neck, pinning her against the wall. He was gesturing wildly with his other hand, while Dwenny stared at him with cold eyes. Containing his anger, Yami called out in a threatening tone. "Get you hands off of her!" Bestian let out a low growl as well.

The young man turned his head towards Yami and Bestian. "Get lost! This isn't of your concern!"

"I'm going to ask you one more time: release her now!"

"That's it punk! You're asking for it now!" He released Dwenny, then held up his hand. A blue fireball appeared in his hand, glowing menacingly.

Yami's eyes widened. So he knew magick as well!

Dwenny saw the fireball too, and rolled her eyes. Idiot! She called out mentally to him. Don't you know he's the one? The Council will have your ass if they found out that you tried to harm him.

The young man kept his gaze on Yami. Him? Are you sure?

Positive. Look at what's around his neck, you moron. Dwenny was getting really irritated by now.

The young growled a little, lowering his arm. The blue fireball disappeared. "You're not worth the effort," he said. He raised his arms, and blue flames came up form the ground, engulfing him. When they died down, he was gone.

Yami blinked, looking at where the blonde man had been. Seems his magick is strong as well. Then he remembered why he was here in the first place, and rushed over to Dwenny, who was still leaning against the wall, her eyes blank and staring. Yami gently placed a hang on her shoulder, causing her to look at him. "Are you all right?" he asked in a concerned tone. If that bastard had harmed her, he was going to make him pay…

Dwenny smiled a little. "I'm fine, Yami. Thank you for saving me."

Bestian came up to them. He jumped up on Dwenny's leg. Dwenny reached down a little and rubbed his head. "Thank you too, Bestian. Good guard dog."

Bestian sat back down, panting happily.

"Come on," Yami said. "Let's get you out of here." He wrapped a protective arm around her shoulders, then led her out of the alley, Bestian following close behind.

They walked across the street, heading into the nearby park. Dwenny was consciously aware that Yami still had an arm around her shoulders. He's just being concerned, she told herself sternly. It doesn't mean a thing Remember your assignment! Do not let personal feelings get in the way. The Council will NOT be pleased if you failed…

Yami glanced at Dwenny. Her eyes were still a bit glazed over, like she was deeply thinking of something. Yami wondered if she felt the same connection as he did. He liked having his arm around her, and he had to quell the impulse to crush her close to him. He had no idea where that impulse came from. It just seemed so…natural some how to him. Again, the feeling of great familiarity swept over him. His heart ached for something, but he wasn't sure what it ached for…

They continued walking through the park, each absorbed in their own thoughts. They finally stopped when they came to one of the many beautiful fountain places in the park. This one had two marble dragons intertwining with each other, water flowing out of their wings and mouths. The soft sounds of water splashing into the fountain surrounded them. They were they only ones there.

Yami led Dwenny to one of the many marble benches circling the fountain. He reluctantly dropped his arm from her shoulders as they sat down. Bestian curled up on the grass near them, keeping a watchful gaze for anything unusual. For several minutes, neither spoke. Yami wasn't really sure what to do, but the silence finally got to him. "Dwenny?" he said softly.

Dwenny had been staring at the ground. When she heard Yami's soft voice, she raised her head and blinked a few times, as if coming out of a daze. She looked over at Yami, her emerald eyes looking dark. "Yes?" she asked.

"…" Yami was puzzled by her dark gaze. It must have something to do with that guy who attacked her. Something was definitely wrong. "Is someone…after you?" he asked, concern filling his voice.

Dwenny shook her head. "No. Don't worry, no one is after me. I'm not in any danger." Although I am being watched carefully, Dwenny thought ruefully.

Yami sighed in relief. "Then who was that man who attacked you? He knew your name…"

"Just…someone from my past. He's nothing to worry about, really."

The way she said it made Yami feel as if she wasn't telling the entire truth. She refused to meet his gaze when she had said it, looking towards the ground instead. He wondered what could she be hiding, and why she would hide it. Hmm…someone from her past. An old boyfriend, perhaps? Yami suddenly felt a pang of jealousy deep within his chest. It surprised him at first, but then he remembered how he had felt with his arm around her. Could I be falling for Dwenny? He hadn't been in love since…well, he couldn't really remember the last time he was in love. Maybe it was locked away with all those other memories of his past in Ancient Egypt. Yami felt his heart drop a little, feeling sad that he couldn't even remember being in love.

Dwenny glanced over at Yami, sensing some conflict coming from him, then…great sadness. She was a bit puzzled by this, hoping that she wasn't the cause of his hurt, although deep down she had a feeling that she was. Dwenny bit her lower lip a little. She knew she shouldn't put personal feelings into this, but she just couldn't help it. Yami was…special some how, and it pained her to see him hurt. Dwenny refused to admit, even to herself, that she could be falling in love with him…

Dwenny gently placed a hand on Yami's shoulder, causing him to turn to her. She looked deep into his crimson eyes, and took a deep breath. "I'm sorry if I've hurt in you any way, Yami. I don't mean to. But there are some things that you can't know about me yet. It's not the right time. When that time does come, I promise I'll explain everything." She paused. "But for now…please trust me that everything is ok."

Yami stared into her deep emerald eyes, no longer dark, but full of kindness and concern… and a hint of something else? Yami started to feel himself getting lost in them. He reached out and gently placed his cool fingers on her chin. Still looking straight into her eyes, he said quietly, "Of course I trust you. I'll always trust you."

Dwenny smiled a little, and nodded, placing a hand on his. Everything around her began to fade away, leaving only the two of them. She forgot about her assignment, the Council, everything as she gazed into those deep crimson orbs.

Yami was feeling the moment as well. Impulsively, without thinking, he leaned forward and gently pressed his lips against hers…

The moment their lips touched, an image flashed through Dwenny's mind. It was of her and Yami, dressed in what looked like Ancient Egyptian clothing, sharing a passionate kiss. It was over almost before it began. With a gasp, Dwenny pulled back form Yami, dropping both of her hands, her eyes wide with shock.

Yami was confused. "Did I do something wrong?" he asked.

Dwenny looked at him fully. "You didn't see the image?"

Yami raised his eyebrows. "What image? What do you mean?" He had no idea what she was talking about.

Dwenny stood up abruptly. "I'm sorry, Yami. But I have to go. I'll see you later maybe." This was way too weird for her to handle right now. She had to think it through. Whistling to Bestian, Dwenny made her way out of the park, leaving a very stunned and confused Yami behind.

I know I know, I'm not the greatest at romance scenes, but hey, I'm trying here. So Dwenny has yet another secret of hers. Story should pick up a bit from here, particularly the romance part. In the next chapter, Yami refuses to come out of his soul room, and a concerned Yugi has to convince Dwenny to go in and talk to him. What'll happen next time they meet? I have a HUGE test on Monday, so I probably won't be able to update until then at least, if I'm lucky. Hope you enjoyed this chapter… reviews are appreciated! :)
