Ch. 6: Despair and Confusion

Yami sat on the marble bench, his face in his hands, elbows resting on his knees. He didn't understand why Dwenny had run off so quickly after they had kissed. He could have sworn she had felt the same sense of longing as he had. He could see it in her dazzling emerald eyes…or so he thought. Maybe they had both just gotten caught up in the "moment" of things, and she didn't feel anything at all towards him. Yami felt a sudden drop of his heart when he thought that. He lifted his face from his hands a little, staring off into space as his thoughts began to take him down a road that he knew he wouldn't like…but he knew he couldn't stop them as well.

Of course she doesn't feel anything towards you, his mind told him. Why would she? You're not even real, just some Ancient spirit with no memory of who he is. Why would she want to bother with some thing like you? You have no place in her world…

As more negative thoughts came pouring into Yami's mind, he felt his heart sinking lower and lower. Finally, he couldn't stand it any more, being in a world where he was not wanted, where he didn't belong. He retreated hastily into the eerie depths of his soul room…

Yugi suddenly found himself sitting alone on a bench, a marble dragon fountain behind him. That's strange, he thought to himself, Yami's date with Dwenny couldn't possibly be over already, could it? Something's not right. I better go check on him.

Yugi walked up to Yami's soul room, and was surprised to find that he couldn't open it. For a moment, he feared that another spell was cast on the door, but nothing looked out of the ordinary. It felt like Yami was locking him out on purpose. He had also closed off his mind link with him, so Yugi had no idea what he was feeling or anything. Yugi knocked on the door, calling out to Yami. But still, there was no answer. Yugi started to worry about his darker half. Something bad must have happened between him and Dwenny. Maybe they had a fight? Yugi sighed. He guessed Yami just wanted some alone time, so he decided to give him some space and come back later.

Several days had passed, and still no sign of Yami. With each passing day, Yugi grew more and more worried. He tried countless times to talk to him through their mind link, as well as knocking on his door. But it was always the same- no answer. Yugi felt like he was losing Yami and it scared him. Finally, he turned to the one person he felt could help.

Yugi barely caught up with her as she was walking to her car. "Dwenny, wait up! I need your help on something!"

Dwenny and Bestian both turned at his voice, which sounded urgent. "What is it, Yugi? Is something wrong?" she asked in a concerned tone.

Yugi finally caught up to them, panting a little. He stopped, catching his breath. "I really *gasp* need *gasp* your help..."

Dwenny could feel Yugi's panicking emotions. "Calm down, Yugi. Of course I'll help." She smiled a little, encouraging Yugi.

"It's Yami!" Yugi blurted out. "Ever since your date with him, he's locked himself in his soul room and won't come out! He won't even talk to me through our mind link!" Yugi was at the point of almost breaking down, tears threatening to come.

Dwenny just stared at Yugi, her mouth slightly open. "What do you mean? You can't talk to him at all?"

Yugi shook his head, struggling to keep his tears from falling. "No, he won't contact me at all. It's like he's shutting himself out from the world, completely. And I have no idea how to help him, cuz I don't even know why he's so hurt." The tears finally began falling down his cheeks.

Dwenny looked away. Sighing, she reached into her car and got some tissues for Yugi. She silently handed them to him, then looked away from him, not wanting to meet his eyes. Did I really hurt Yami that much? That he's even shutting out Yugi? Maybe I shouldn't have run off so quickly. Dwenny shook her head. He probably thinks I don't like him or something now. I'm certain that he cares for me- he even came to my rescue when he thought that idiot Gwydion was going to hurt me. But how deep does that care go? Is it something even more? And how much damage have I caused by running off begin explaining anything?

Yugi managed to calm himself down again, wiping away the last of his tears. He looked at Dwenny hopefully, tugging on her jacket to get her attention. She looked back at him. "I was hoping… if it isn't too personal that is… that you could tell me what had happened, so maybe I could figure out how to help Yami?"

Dwenny looked at his pleading stare, and sighed again. How could she refuse such as adorable look? "Well Yugi, we were at the park, sitting in front of a dragon fountain. Yami leaned in and kissed me, and I guess I freaked out or something, and I ran off. I think that's why he might be hurt." She looked away sheepishly. So this is why the Council warned of not allowing your emotions to get in the way. Goddess, what a mess this is turning into…

"Why were you freaked out?" Granted, Yugi had never been kissed before in his life, but he figured that people usually don't freak out over a kiss…unless something was wrong or weird about it.

Dwenny hesitated. Why did she freak out? Well, certainly that image of her and Yami kissing in what appeared to be Ancient Egypt startled her some. But it might have been just a run of her imagination, given that Yami had told her that his past lay in Ancient Egypt. So it that's the case then, why in the world would she even think that? Then it hit her, and Dwenny's eyes widened with realization. She thought of an alternative quickly, but that wasn't much better than the first. Oh Goddess, this really can't be good!

Yugi looked at Dwenny, puzzled, noticing her expression. "Uhh…Dwenny? Are you ok?"

Dwenny blinked a few times, then took a deep breath, fighting to regain her composure from the shock of her new discovery. "I'm fine, Yugi. And to answer your other question, I saw an image when Yami and I …kissed, and I guess it just really started me."

"Image? What kind of image? What do you think it means?"

"I have some ideas, but I'm not sure which, if any, of them are right. I think I need to talk to Yami about this."

Yugi was slightly relieved. Maybe she could straighten things out with Yami, and then he would be ok. "Sure, but how are you going to reach him?"

"Hmm…I'm not sure. If you have no objections, I guess I'll have to go knock on his door, and hope that he's willing to talk to me." She wasn't sure if Yami was really hurt…or really angered.

Yugi nodded. "Well, it's worth a shot, I guess. Can you come over now?"

"Of course." She opened her car door, then hit the button to unlock the passenger's door. Bestian jumped into the back as Yugi went around to the other side and climbed in. Dwenny got in as well, and started up the engine. She backed out of her space, then slowly made her way out of the parking lot. Yugi noticed his friends standing near the school gates, and he waved to them. They all waved back, uncertainty in their expressions as they turned and looked at each other. What was going on now?

Once inside the game shop, after saying hello to Grandpa, Yugi and Dwenny went up the stairs, Bestian following. They dropped their bags on the floor, then took a seat on the couch. Dwenny turned to face Yugi. "Ok Yugi, I'm going to go in and try to get Yami to talk to me."

Yugi nodded and closed his eyes. Dwenny reached out and placed her fingertips lightly on his temples, then closed her eyes as well. When she opened them a few seconds later, she found she was once again in the dark hallway of Yugi's and Yami's joined minds. She glanced at Yugi in his doorway as she walked up to Yami's door. Yugi smiled in encouragement and hope. Dwenny returned the smile shortly, then looked at the door before her. It was dark and rather uninviting, and she noticed the Eye of Ra on it. She must have been so focused on breaking that spell the last time that she hadn't noticed it before. She wondered what exactly was Yami's connection to the ancient past. But there wasn't really any time to think about that now. First thing's first, see if Yami was ok or not. Raising a hand, she prepared to knock on the door. Well, here goes…

Dwenny lightly knocked on the heavy steel door. "Yami?" she said softly, "I know you're hiding in there. We need to talk…" She waited, but no response came. She tried again. "Look, I'm sorry about what had happened at the park the other day. I shouldn't have run off like that. I really need to explain why I ran off…So will you please open the door?"

Some where deep within his soul room, Yami lifted his head slightly off the bed he was lying on. He thought he had heard Dwenny's faint voice calling out to him. A small glimmer of hope started within him…

Back at his door, Dwenny was starting to get slightly annoyed. She sighed. "Come on, Yami. Will stop being so stubborn already, and open this door? I just want to talk…You can have the pleasure of kicking me out later if you want." She tried the door handle again, not really expecting anything to happen. But to her surprise, the door swung open with a loud creak. Dwenny raised her eyebrows a little and smiled. "Well, it's about time…" She looked back at Yugi, who understood that he couldn't see Yami just quite yet. After exchanging brief smiles, Dwenny turned back towards the door, and slowly took a few steps inside. The door slammed shut behind her, and she found herself in complete darkness. She raised her left hand up, and small green fireball appeared in it. She then increased its size and brightness, using it as a sort of lantern. The light from the flame danced and bounced off whatever it was that was in front of her. She could faintly see the outline of stairs.

"Some light would be nice here," she muttered to herself. To her surprise, lights suddenly illuminated the place, as if someone had flicked on the light switch. Dwenny gasped at what she saw. All around her were stairs upon stairs of stone. Some led to dark doors, others led to more stairways, while others still led to deep passages. Dwenny shook her head in disbelief. "Great," she grumbled, "this could take forever to find Yami. Figures he'd have such a complicated mind." Suddenly, she got an idea. Cupping her hands together, she formed a small green fireball, no bigger than a ping-pong ball. Focusing her magick on the little fireball, she recited this verse: "In my mind I see you there, hiding in your secret lair. Find him, trace him, where he be. Take me to him, so mote it be!"

The fireball grew brighter, then lifted out of Dwenny's hand. "Go," she told it. "Seek out Yami!" The fireball took off, and Dwenny sped off after it, making sure to not lose it.

Ooo, cliffhanger-ish huh? Heh heh… Sorry about that, but I had to end this chapter somewhere, cuz I wanted to update as soon as I could. Anyways, will Dwenny be able to find Yami within the dark depths of his soul room? What will happen if she does? Find out next chapter! Please review! Not very many people are, so I'm guessing it's not too popular. *shrugs* but I'll still continue anyways, since I know I at least have ONE reader *you know who you are…thanks! ;)*
